personally me not worried.................if someone prefer not to show it you go in accessories on your pc you find a program call paint ......so you can edit your picture you just paint over the plate re save it and post it

probably depends on the context of the picture.

(some/most/all) insurance companies arent keen on people taking their cars around or down a racetrack so a pic or vidoe of your car on the internet with the plate visible isnt such a great idea.

along those same lines a pic or video taken by a bystander when youre leaving a car show and your foot slips off the clutch and you leave 2 gears of rubber on the road (totally by accident obviously) and the licence plate visible and the vid gets posted to youtube wouldnt be a good thing for your insurance co to find either.

i doubt their is much of a security threat to a pic of your car at a car show or a pic of your car in a for sale ad that is posted on the internet but the reality of today is 'the less people know about you the better' as far i im concerned.

hopefully the cop on this forum will add his two cents.

I switch plates from year to year on my summer drivers and have many pics on the 'net' with many different plates on the same car. I've never really been too worried about it, but I suppose that if I was to list a car on Kijiji or ??? then I would likely "paint" the plate or take new photos with an accessory plate in front. In the end, they're appraised and insured and if they want it they'll figure a way to get it anyhow. Not too much too gain by worrying IMHO.

having someones plate number wont do you much good, the public doesnt have any access to the ministry data base but an insurance company could use the pic.

see an awesome 440+6 cuda rag with an ontario plate on the internet. take the plate number to the dmv and buy a vehicle transfer package (unless theyve changed things its not hard to do). the package will tell you the name of the owner and the town/city they live in. if the person has a listed phone number (and the town is smallish not like Toronto) it shouldnt be hard to find where they live and chances are they keep their car at home.

i think they require id to purchase a transfer package so there might be a paper trail but fake id wont be hard to find if you are already a criminal plus the cops would have to do a search to see if anyone had purchased a transfer package for that car lately (which is unlikely due to it just being a 'property crime').

You actually need the VIN to purchase the package not the plate.

Depending who you deal with at Service Ontario, if they follow the Privacy Laws. They keep the page with the current owners name and address.

thats odd since the seller is th eone who has to provide the package, i dont think you can simply roll into a dmv office with a plate number on a napkin and request a seller package, i will try it though just to see if they just hand them out, if thats the case i dont think thats right

unless theyve made some changes at service ont anyone can buy the package.

show them the plate number and if they ask any questions you just say something along the lines of 'the owner isnt really interested in selling so he hasnt bought the transfer package but if i can verify that it is a one owner car like he says i am going to give him an offer he cant refuse, im just doing my due diligence before i present him with an offer'.

makes total sense and the dmv gets some $$ ..... everyones happy :)

If it was a big threat I believe John would be flooded with emails about blotching the plate numbers out of the hundreds of pics he has taken ...I do laugh when I see ads on kijiji with the plate covered, yet they give an address and phone #

I see lots of cars on the weekends with the plate removed or covered up at the Drag Strip. Have asked a couple why and Insurance is the biggest answer and then the interweb! Someone else can be taking pictures of a friends car and your car will be in it, and when it's on the web, everyone can see.

Some interesting results and posts. Most Service ontario locations are privately owned these days and might not provide the best security. Used vehicle packages can be had online needing only a fake drivers licence and C.C. A VIN can be jotted down at any car show so perhaps it is best to keep them covered. Just Say'n

I know of two examples of licenses plates being published on the internet to come back and bight that person in the as.

My son races his street car at the auto cross in Barrie. His insurance company gave him two options. Higher rate or find a new company. His picture of him racing on the course was posted on facebook

Another was a friend was in a traffic accident with his car and it got totaled
Insurance company later saw a picture of his car at the accident seen license plate and a for sale sign in the window of the car.

^^ I think that would be less of a licence plate biting them in the as$ and more like Facebook biting them in the a$s. Yet another good reason not to do Facebook. Employers are checking Facebook on job apps too = 'Little Brother'. Government = 'Big Brother'

Well the Facebook argument is a hole other thread. It was a picture of his car / plate on the internet that resulted in bad consequences

I personally don't mined showing off my plate I have nothing to hide from the police or the insurance company.

I know the plate are a long way off from fitting "Fordy Acres Car Farm". I remember when six characters was max - now it's up to eight! I'm not sure how long before we're allowed 16?
