I'm looking to rent/borrow one for a week or so to diagnose a rear end noise I'm having. Gear ratio not important, but 3.91:1 would be ideal.

I'll look to see if the gears aren't pitted, but I have a "489" case with 3:23 cone type Sure Grip. It's been sitting in a pail under my workbench for a couple years. If the gears aren't pitted, as that won't do you any good for checking for noise, if they are. You're welcome to it. Lucky for you, you don't need to drive west of TO to come get it, I have my friend from Kingston here, and he can drop it off on his way back Sunday evening.
I won't be able to check until later this evening, on the gears condition.

That would be awesome !! A bit of pitting won't be an issue, because I'm trying to get rid of a certain noise. I'm basically trying to rule out the transmission. Although I have all new bearings and Richmond gears, and the tooth pattern is dead on, I've always had noise on coast and decel.

The pinion seal will likely leak, aside from that, it looks really good, feels tight also. I didn't throw an indicator on it to check backlash.
A bit of cleaning, and it's good to go.

Hmmmmm, chicken wings and beer, biggrinbiggrin.

Hmmm.. I seem to recall a lot of Dragters using the old 8 3/4 rear end !! Almost as strong as a Ford 9", but way stronger than anything from the "bowtie" corner.

Hey stax....like you I ended up with about 7 Dodge rear ends.....junk to me. I was going to throw them out.......But

I use them as anchors to hold down my dock. Been using them for years...rusty old junk

I only use Ford 9`rear ends.....so I wouldnt sell one ...sorry Dan

Maybe a second hand store would have one......People always donate useless crap to those guys

I knew a guy who once threw a dodge rear end in his cesspool. I asked him why and he said......

Its thè biggest Turd I could find....all the little turds gravitate to it.....keeps the rest of the pool clean!

I was going to argue with him......but.......he was right!

I saw it with my own eyes......honest

just sayin

I'm I going to have to get into metallurgy and nickel content and odd as opposed to even gear ratio's wear patterns.
If you do the math, you'll find that with your even numbered (ie; 4:10) gears the pinion gear and the ring gear hit the same groove substantially more often then an odd numbered ratio (ie; 3:91) therefore less wear. I won't even get into the higher nickle content and hardness.

You want to toss them, I'll take them.

So what diameter is a 12 Bolt anyway? So if I drill and tap two more holes in the housing, and make it a 14 bolt, is that better?

You forgot to mention the wheel bearings!! At least the 8 3/4 and Ford 9" use a proper bearing race that is pressed on the axle. What does GM do? Run the bearing right on the axle. I really can't think of a $hittier design.
