Also,
Tested as a "hot rod" because it will have a motor that was not an option for that vehicle.
Once the motor is in, you need a letter from Porsche to state that fact. Letter is then shown to the testing center when it's time.

Hi guys,

I am new to this forum and you really have to excuse me if this was asked and answered because I looked but could not find it.  I am planning to drop a new GM E-rod crate (6.2L biggrinbiggrinbiggrin) in my 1991 porsche 911.  My 911 needs tailpipe emission testing. I will include all of the emission equipment as per GM. However, when I look on the GM web site it seems to me that they pass in California through an exemption. I am worrying that it might not pass in Ontario.  In fact from the specs from GM it looks like they might not meet the standards required for a 1991 car.  Does anyone have hands on experience with an E-rod crate engine? If I can't figure it out I guess I might just go and try to find a crashed camaro or vette as a donor. That has to pass doesn't it?

Thanks very much in advance!

My Dart does not have these issues!!!

Gavin

The new test is just a check of the OBD 2 systems 97 and up as far as I know anything below that gets a tailpipe sniff No dyno  so ether way as long as you have everything hooked up it should pass

Thanks for the comments guys. I wonder if it will actually pass on the OBDII?  The gm crates are supposed to actually have an outlet.

My real problem is that the numbers I saw in the California exemption look quite high.  I was worrying if it would pass a tail pipe sniff test. In fact, it got me wondering if a new corvette would actually pass a tailpipe sniff?  OBD says everything fine but ....

I actually live in Ontario but it appears I misread the ERod test results used for the California exemption.  I attach both to explain.  The exemption data appears to be in g/mile driven while the Ontario regs are in % and ppm by volume.  When I read the CO column in both and "assumed" the CO columns were comparable I guess I am mistaken. Thankfully. I hate to spend 9k on an engine and not be able to drive it.  OR race it in PCA.

I wonder if anyone in ONT has a factory five with an e rod?

I deal with an '88 Monte Carlo 242/248 duration cam, .600 lift , 383ci small block. It passes drive clean 2 speed idle. I'm 99.999% sure that a GM e-rod will pass no problem.

Your '91 vehicle does not need to comply to OBDII plug in test standards. 2 speed idle only, hot rod status because the 911 was never available with a V8.  But, wire up the diagnostic port to the E-rod engine and let them at it. It will pass if it is installed correctly.

Need help on the install?  I love this stuff.

You are putting the v8 in the front of that 911 right??wink (kiddingbiggrin)

The following is from a Modified S10 Forum. According to a member who does testing, the owner of the vehicle has to show proof that the engine was not an option by the dealer to be able to e-test under their hotrod specs.

Re: engine swap and ontario emissions

I've been an ontario emission tester for about a year now, so I know a bit about it. The hot rod designation applies to any vehicle that has had a motor swapped in that was not a factory option for that year. *official* you must show some supporting documentation in order to qualify no matter how obvious it is....but I know personally if I open the hood of an s10 and see a v8 I am not gunna give the guy a hassle over documents. But like Mat said if you swap in a 6 or another 4, your mostly likely going to be asked to show some kind of documents. I get a lot of Honda's and stuff that owners claim are hotrods, but they can't provide documents nor can I verify which motor is actually in it....so I've gotta test them as factory spec(according to the VIN on the car). The other thing to remember is that the hotrod test, tests your vehicle to 1980 specs....so it is possible to not make that as well, especially if it's not tuned up right.

I have brought factory literature that shows available engines that year and they have accepted it. I just used a Factory Service Manual.
