These cars had one purpose: Absolutely terrorize dragstrips all over North America. While on assignment for 'Legendary Ford Magazine', I was fortunate enough to be in Norwalk Ohio when they had the largest gathering of these beasts that I've ever seen in person. Included were appearances by Dick Brannan with the 1st T-Bolt, the last T-Bolt built and famed driver Phil Bonner with the T-Bolt he drove and the Warbucks Falcon, among others!
The photoshoot was capped off with a quick snort down the strip, two by two....the sound was something else!:
Great pictures Steve. Most 63 Fairlane cars have now been cloned to look like a Thunderbolt. The original ones are now almost priceless. If we had only known!
Thanks for sharing your story and pictures.

Thanks John, there is a key element missing in theses pics unfortunately....SOUND! This event won't be leaving my memory banks anytime soon because of it.
"If only we knew" Indeed!

I'm not the big Ford guy but you can't deny how cool they look ! I live about 40 miles from Norwalk, Fordy Acres. How do you like Summit Motorsports Park ? In 2010, I was out of work and I worked the starting line, track drew and tech inspection for most of the season.
The track was awesome! I heard they dumped 7 million into it in around '08 and it looked great! I was covering the all Ford show there in '09 and had a press pass that allowed me to go where ever, when ever I wanted - I got some great shots while hanging over the wall: Will throw a few on here tomorrow as I can't do that from the computer at work

Awesome track Norwalk, I was there in 2011 for the Pinks All Out event. The pics I posted earlier of my friends Henry J were taken in the pits at Norwalk.
Has to be the best track I've been at.
Here's Rich Christensen doing what he does (did).
And another acquaintance, a track regular and Ohio resident also Lonnie Smith.
Sorry, didn't mean to sidetrack the thread, good memories I felt like sharing.

The reason none of us ran out and bought Thunderbolt Fairlanes or ZL1 Camaros, was price. An all out race car then, as now, was simply too expensive for the average person. You were buying an all out race car in the Thunderbolt and the ZL1 option more than doubled the price of the Camaro. The ZL1 wasn't exactly a user friendly street car either with its 12.5-1 compression and radical cam. To be sure, they would be the ultimate cars to have in a collection but today you wouldn't be driving them on the street much if at all.
