IMG_5496.JPGIMG_5497.JPGIMG_5498.JPGFinally getting the truck together,a little more metal messaging and I will start taking it apart epoxy priming and painting.

Still got to do the chassis. Got to centre new Toyota rear end in rear fender openings and lower rear a wee bit. May or may not box the frame.

Well I travelled out to the center of the universe last week and got hemi 43 to turn down my axles to fit

my chevy rims. Thanks Dan. So now I picked up all the new seals, bearings and brake parts to put the rear end

back together after I clean it up.

Spent the weekend fitting the bed wood and strips, but my hardware got back ordered

bought the red oak from a stair builder, I bought the stairs from for my house, what a great deal!!

Well Hannu

I met Hannu on the forum here, and offered to extract a few broken bolts for him as my shop is a

little better equipped than his. I also learned at this time his garage has no heat. I offered him to work on his stuff

in my heated garage, so now since Dec he is over 3-4 night's a week and we have become friend's. It work's great for

both of us ,as some night's I am lazy and not going out ,Hannu call's and I am working out there as I as I should be.

Thank's Hannu

Well anyway have been picking away at the chassis build for the truck

Rebuilt the 1950 front axle I bought from Fatstax  with bendix style brakes

34 axle was mechanical brakes and later found it was bent as well.Everything on the the axle is new

new king pins, bearings, seals, wheel cylinders ,brake shoes, holddown kit, flex hose's and brake drums

most of these part's were Flea market finds  under 200.00 including the purchase from Fatstax

Joe, thank you!

People may think you have been lazy because you are not posting any new photos. I know you have been working hard on the truck and it looks great!

Btw, I went on Friday to that Mississauga Air Cha Spring Shope on Midway Blvd and bought me some U bolts and center bolts, good service and not too expensive. I put the front springs together and they look good now. Not so good story with the rear springs, one side okay but the other side has 6 out of 9 leafs broken...

Moving on to rear end

I am using a 1998 Toyota 4 runner rear end . I bought the complete rear frame section from a guy and removed

everything that I thought I may need including parking brake cables and handle . The whole assembly cost me 200.00

The rear end is 55 inches wide and same 6 bolt pattern as chev trucks . 34 chev axle is 55 inches wide

the gearing on this resr end  4.30-1 and is posi with 12 inch drum brakes. Pretty stout rear end as well , IMG_5394.JPGIMG_5395.JPGIMG_5396.JPG

I had to purchase a 2 nd rear end as the backing plates were pooched on this rear end another 125.00

Toyota needs a special tool to pull the axles or 150.00 for the dealer to do it (x 2) so I seen theirs and built

my own

The rim locator was to big for a chevy rim and needed to be turned down on a lathe.

Hemi 43 Dan offered to do this for me, went for a great visit ,refused to take any money finally got him to

take enough for a case of beer Thanks Dan

This too has new bearings and seals ,new brake drums, new shoes, new wheel  20131202_222653.jpg20131202_222620.jpg20131202_222354.jpg20131202_224820.jpg20131202_225050.jpg20131202_230518.jpgIMG_5507.JPGIMG_5506.JPG

cylinders, hold down kit

A buddy that owns a part supply house got me everything for 140.00

so I cut off all the unwanted brackets from the rear end and painted it and put it back together.

I then located under my frame set my pinion angle and off to the races.

I had to fabricate 2 lower trailing arm mount's and the upper trailing arm mounts as well.

Once these were installed I cleaned and painted the inside of the frame rails.

I then fabricated the boxing plates ,Painted the rear sides of them and tacked them in place.

I still have to mount the coilovers and sway bar. Yesterday I finished welding the boxing plates

and made the frame rail plates and mounted the steering box.

Just bring both upper arms with you. It's should be straight forward to make those adjustable.

What's the OD of the bars??

i think most would be frowning upon using toyota parts in a domestic rod but i have some buddies who rock crawl and they use the yoda diffs, you have a wide variety of gear ratios to choose from and lots of those have rear disc brakes as well.  you can also get an electric locker from a factory toyota that would fit that rear, so posi on demand.  where else would you get a modern rear axle thats narrow enough with 6 lug?  i think those diffs are quite strong as well

the Toyota rear end is a strong rear end
