New here looking at a kit car - advice is needed
Permalink

Hi guys,

I think that I have found the proper forum to discuss my dilemma. Hopefully you rodders can offer some good advice!

I am currently looking at a kit car registered as an 08 that has a 355 1994 camaro engine with a t56 and no emissions just 2 sidepipes with magna flows.

I really want this deal to work out but I have a few concerns with this highly modifed car.

I have sourced out insurance for the vehicle. It is the same company the current owner is using. So that is good news.

I live in cambridge does anyone know a good place to certify a kit car in the area? And what is really needed for certification? This car has no windows or wipers or doors or marker lights...

Also I have been reading that kit cars are exempt from the drive clean program but since this car has no emissions of any kind is it really legal? I have read that a kit car should have what ever emissions were installed by GM in 1994 when it was a camaro? What is the worst that can happen if the police pull me over and start looking for things?

I dont want to buy a car that will constantly be pulled over for safety and emissions violations...

Thanks for the help.

welcome to the funny farm !!
I sure hope you know what you're getting into!! LOL
First of all, this car, even though it's "Drive Clean exempt", will still have to have the emission controls that were originally installed on the 1994 Camaro that the engine came out of. if this car has no emissions on it, then you have a lot of work to do.
As far as a safety certificate, anyone with a license can do it, but make sure it's done properly. If you have a Buddy that will do it for you for a case of beer, then you will be in a heap of trouble if you ever get pulled over. Fatchuk is a member here that knows a whole lot more than me about the certification end, so hopefully he'll chime up and tell you the facts.

Would you happen to have a picture , link, name , model, hard to go on it has no wipers, windows, doors, emissions, if its a kit it should have  a manufacture's tag , model, and some type of serial or vin. Not bustin your balls but as it stands I got a picture of a go cart with a 355 in it . So if this is true, Id have to say chances are you will get pulled over and I have a strong feeling its not going to be good.winkwinkwink

You have valid concerns. I too have yearned for a nice Factory Five kit Cobra, but I'm leary of the importing rules along with your emission concerns - even if it's e-test exempt, you will still be at the mercy of an MTO officer if you become a target with a later model engine - same as pre '87 cars, e-test exempt, but still required to have OEM emissions equipment in place and functioning. I'm considering using an old FE big block 427 to hopefully skirt the whole emissions issue altogether.

The safety should be pretty straight forward, and not something you want to avoid anyway. I've never tried to seek out a guy that will hand over a safety for a case of beer. Cheating on a safety is the last thing you want on a fast hot rod and real bad for the guy writing the safety if something bad happens because of it. I've always liked having a fully functioning car with working lights, wipers, steering, brakes and a functioning E-brake - I've relied on them twice before on different cars in the past and it gives me peice of mind knowing it's there just in case.

OOOORRRRRR......

You could swap out the 94 ....355 and drop in a mid sixties 283 / 327.....without any emissions

Just sayin.......Probably way cheaper than getting the car as it is today to pass

Get the guy to drop $2-3,000 to cover the cost of replacing the engine....

OOOORRRRR...
Spend the few hundred and put the emissions equipment back on the current LT1 engine. No biggie as the engine was already set-up for it and everything is available.

Without pictures.....its hard to comment.......

Is the motor exposed? ooooorrrrrrr is it under a hood?

Open motor......... would look like CRAP with cannisters and hoses sticking out all over the place

and.....emissions tests

Change Motor to mid sixties............CLEAN and NO TESTS

Under hood? who cares?

Dave....what about custom install? what about vapour return to tank...extra plumbing and add ons would be about the same as replacing

Untill we know more about WHAT THE HECK IT IS ??????we can only offer uneducated pot shots

Just guessin

I have 2 questions:
Where is the car now…in Canada?
Is it plated and have an ownership?

Depending on your interpretation of the regulations, if it is registered as a new build '08, it needs emissions equipment anyway regardless of what engine is in it.
For that engine the emissions stuff can be mounted neat and tidy as long as the factory intake and EFI is in place.

As far as garages in Cambridge try Hutchinson automotive or Special Interest Cars
These guys deal in older collector cars and will be aware of what's actually required to get you on the road

Check out Transport Canada  "Kit Cars" in Canada, lots of do's don'ts http://www.gc/eng/roadsafety/tp-tp2436-rs200804-menu-685.htm   also  www.ffcars/forums/31-canadian-region   If You can't pull this stuff up, I'm in Kitchener and have copies.  You didn't say if this was from US, if so, I was denied access for a kit car by Canadian Boarder Services. I think it should be Canadian BS
