A while ago , on another Forum , I asked this question and was pretty much ignored ....thought it was a reasonable question , myself .
Here's the deal . Sometime in the New Year , I will hopefully buy a late 40's to 1956 F1/F100 . It will have to be pretty much turnkey since I'm an old fart and can't do projects any more .
Since I'm a Ford Guy ( doesn't mean I hate GM or Mopar , I just prefer Ford ) I want the truck to be Ford powered ...would consider a flattie , a 6 banger , Y block or sbf , depending on the year , of course . In a perfect world I'd like a 390 FE in a '55 or '56 .
Here's the problem ...I'm seeing a crapload of Ford trucks with 350 Chevy crate motors ....I just won't have a Chevy in a Ford . Personally I like Ford in Ford , Chevy in Chevy , Mopar in Mopar , Hupmobile in Hupmobile ....you get the picture .
The Question ....is the 350 Chevy / 350 Automatic trans going to be worth anything when I'm trying to figure out money . I know I'll be spending more $$$ to yank the Chevy and install a Ford ....I'm just trying to do the math as best I can !!
if look on kijji ads in Sudbury there s a 1950 with a 302 and c6 tranny that looks like a pretty nice driver for $12000.00 .................THERE S YOUR FORD POWER IN A FORD c6 means you can drop in any big block you want 390 .460 ?

This sure aint no stupid question but one I've been wrestling with for a long time. When I started in this hobby in the early 70's the reason we used sbc was that from 55 and on all chev blocks mated with all chev transmissions also the width was narrower and length shorter than anything else. That made them perfect for Model A's etc and you could make a mighty mouse!Since there was a million wrecked ones in every wrecking yard in every town parts were easy to get and CHEAP.The other reason was after market part were plentiful because chevy never changed the outside dementions. A water pump from a 55 would fit a 85 well you get the point. But like 56loser says drop in a 390-460 no even though you could get a c6 behind a 302 the bell housing is different and since it's a one piece casing you need a different trans also. This was one of my big frustrations when I was building but I solved that by forgetting about those old motors and go with something new fuel injected a simple turn of the key foot to the floor tires burning no coughing no back fire just go! Everything newer comes with overdrive trans most wiring kits are a no brainer and cost as little as 500 bucks. Now that I am like TJ I want Ford in a Ford,Dodge in a Dodge etc but all that I've found is awesome cars with a belly button engine That PU sounds good drive it for a couple years then yank the 302 and install a v8 SHO Unless someone can find a good "driver" for another old fart... ME.
but if he want s a C6 in he just as to backup the tranny mounts a little and the c6 will bolt ..............right in............. but depending how much clearance they kept from the floor...............then you get the headaches of cutting the floor and start modifying things not worth doing .....when you can easily changes heads on the 302 and get enough power to laugh at chevys
Thanks for the comments so far guys , I do appreciate other opinions that I can toss around .
- Carl , the $1500 range was my 'guesstimate' given that a new 350 crate motor doesn't sell for too much more .
........if I find a money tree the 5.0 Coyote is awesome but I also like the 5.4L Lightning ( supercharged ) ...drove them when I was with Ford . Lotsa bucks though but huge torque .
-56loser ...couldn't find the ad on Sudbury kijiji but I'll keep looking .....I agree , probably a C4 as a C6 would be too much trans imo . We had a guy come into where I work , back in the summer , driving a very decent '49 F1 with a 289 / C4 . It wasn't for sale but he admitted to having 12K in the truck .
-34guy ...I wouldn't swap in a 390 , it's just that if the truck came with it , I've always felt it was a very underrated motor over the years ...they can be built to kick ass without emptying the bank . I don't have an aversion to the sbf ...had a 289 in my '67 Mustang and ordered my new '68 fastback with the 302 back in the day ......never had a 351 but they used to build them here in Windsor ( a big gas guzzler in their time ).
Going to look on Michigan Craigs List as a good buddy of mine imports 3 or 4 '60s vehicles each year to flip . He's a very good Chevy and Mopar guy and knows what he is looking at . While he doesn't know Fords as well , I trust his judgement on the rest of the deal.
You can't find anything cheaper then a 350 so anyone looking for one used isn't going to want to pay much more then scrap . Depends on the condition and how long you want to hold on to it. Seems like the average price is around 500 bucks for a clean used one .If you haven't looked the price's of flatheads are well beyond stupid. A turn key truck can be 100 different things depending on who you talk to But if its running and drive able its going to command more then a project with a blown motor. Really if you don't want a project wait until something acceptable shows up . They always do.
for what it is worth - you are money ahead to buy what you are looking for - especially if you are not planning to be doing any of the work
you could easily wind up with half the price of the truck in an engine swap by the time a shop is done with it. Hell- even if you are doing the work it could get that expensive.
never mind the down time.
want a Ford Ford driver - buy one done and enjoy it
lots of the out there - just takes patience to dig up the right one
I've been looking for the same years of Ford trucks myself as a Daily Driver/Tow rig, and have no doubt seen the very same ads you have - Seen a few sharp looking trucks and found a SBC in the fine print. Deal breaker/heartbreak.
I agree with everyone else that commented, if you aren't doing the work, spend a little more to get what you want or buy one cheap enough to pay for labour and parts to make it yours. I myself am looking to buy a roller if possible to add my own drivetrain to(already got the whole truck built in my head!)
Of course a Coyote would be the ultimate!

That is a nice one , fatchuk , ....long box is rare .......looks like it's well done from top to bottom and I like the Y-block , probably a 272 . My sister lives in Hamilton .....might ask her and her husband to take a peek . Thanks for the heads up .
Just saw a decent looking '49 F1 ( pictures from 20 feet are ALWAYS decent , right ? ) ....for $5000 , has cracked block ( flattie ) but he will listen to offers ......about 1/2 hour from my place ......oh I forgot about going thru customs at the border ....'bout 1 1/2 hours from my place .

Be patient, even if it does have a Chevy drive train there are lots of people wanting them. A decent '80s Mustang 5.0 and trans. is not that hard to find and the fuel injection is easy to install. If you want more power the 4.6s are getting easier to find, even the 3 or 4 valve motors. Biggest downfall of all the newer motors is the threat of the Geese Police checking you emissions equipment. There has been lots of talk on here of guys being hassled.

Good point Spinner , I could leave the Chevy in it until the right combo motor/automatic/9 inch comes along ....not the end of the world , well , almost . I could always lock the hood so my buddies can't see !
TJ, A friend of mine in Detroit was telling me about a project truck over there. I believe it was a late 50's Ford project truck with one of those supercharged Lightning motors for sale pretty cheap. It was almost done except for paint and upholstery when the owner died. His wife is trying to sell the truck. Let me know if you're interested and I'll put you in touch. Gotta help out a Belle River neighbor right?

If TJ isn't interested, I'd like to hear more details on this one!

I just contacted a friend of mine who has a wrecked supercharged lightening mustang with a perfect drive train. I talked to his son and he will have his father get back to me shortly. He bought the mustang to put into a pickup as you are talking about but things change. As soon as I hear, I will let you know. If it is for sale and you don't want it, maybe someone here might.
Thanks for the tip , Ragtop , but since I won't be ready for a couple of months , let's pass this opportunity on to Fordy Acres and see if it's to his liking . I would be in interested in how the conversation goes , though .
I bought my 1950 f-47 last summer and I love the 239 flathead, every thing for this truck is easy to find ,all but the tree speed transmission ,I'm getting mine rebuilt by Max Vanpelts in Ohio ,these truck are worth so much more if you keep them original, shame on someone putting a chev motor in a ford. That is a really good question. Merry Christmas to you .
