Only -23c here this morning, no wind or breeze, so pretty good.
So far have 25inches of snow on the level. Pretty normal winter so far, other than it got cold earlier.
This weekend we are back up to 0c again.
- 34 with the wind chill. My p/u truck door is frozen shut so I won't be going far today. I have an open farmers field across from me and the wind pushes snow and ice right into the door jams. Looks like a good day for laundry and getting the house cleaned up...ah who am I kidding it's nap/couch day. Enjoy
-25 and windy as heck...Drove into work this morning, but was sent home...They dont want us to drive in this, most roads closed anyways. Spent the last 2 hrs trying to blow out the driveway, rake the roof etc...Im frozen, screw it...it will melt....lol
My youngest kid works for the county. This time of year he's on a plow/salter and he's gathering overtime like crazy. I don't envy him 12/14 hours in plow is no fun.
The Windsor paper had an editorial discussion about no buses / keeping the little brats home / don't walk to school etc. The " keep the little darlings home " was where most folks were at . I rarely respond but could help myself ...wondered if these enabled kids were out helping mom and dad shovel the snow that was keeping them from school ? A reasonable question ...there were ZERO in my neighbourhood , lots of moms and dads shoveling though . In the 14 years I've been in this house I have never had a kid knock on the door asking if he/she could shovel for $$$ .
12:01 in Blackstock & it's 6 below 0 F!!!! Howling winds, dog went out at 7;30 & was pawing at the door 2 min. later!!!! Both of us are by the fireplace right now. Can't keep the house warm with the winds, furnace is on & off every 10 min. Pete

That's crazy not sending them to school because of cold. Stores down there not sell winter gear??
If it is storming really bad then maybe they stay home but I've driven my kids there a few times when the busses weren't running. After they shoveled the driveway out.....
If we didn't go anywhere when it was cold out or snowed up here, we would be home bound 8 months of the bloody year.

My 2 younger brothers had to drive about 40 miles one way in order to catch the school bus. (Back in the late '80s, the North Shore Board of Education paid my parents $30/day to cover travel expenses to just get them to the one mine site where the brothers were able to catch the bus to school) Many times they just drove to town instead. A few times they got to school only to find out that school was closed. Many times they drove to school before the plows had made it out to plow/sand.

Don't know how long you have lived in the Sudbury area, but I remember the winter of '90/'91, I had moved up to the parents place north of Elliot Lake. The entire month of Feb was -40 or colder. Temp was taken at 8am everyday. Wind chill not factored in. It was cold enough that winter, that we were still able to do some ice fishing on Easter weekend!!

There are still people in mine and other small towns/ rural areas still getting paid to drive there kids to the nearest bus route. My 12yr old son's school is 25kms away from our home.
Do you know how cold it was this morning in Newcastle ?I'm actually asking, because I have no idea !! I've been watching TV and playing on the computer all day. You'd have to be nuts to go outside in this weather. Hope my Wife makes it home OK from work !!
Ziggy i remember that winter of 90-91, and the temps. That was the first time i discovered 0W30 oil.
Had a chev truck with a 350 in it, and anything below -10F it wouldn't start, but after switching over to 0W30 that thing would spin over like it was 60 or 70F. Fire up almost immediatley, and no lifter rattle either, and 50Psi of oil pressure.
A guy i knew was logging in behind my place then and that is what they had in the skidder and other trucks left there in the bush overnight. He had told me about that.
Every winter after always switched to 0W30 around Dec 1st. Then dump it about the end of March.
Never heard them say anything about that, the only difference i noticed with that oil, was in warmer temps i had about 5-10 lbs less oil pressure, and yeah it would use a bit, but not excessive by any means.
(Neat thing about that logging job was in early march the weather turned real warm melting the snow and the haul road went for a crap, and they couldn't get the last of the logs out so just left them, which is common, not worth burying the truck in mud.
So the guy told me if i wanted what was left to go take it, so we cut up just over 40 cords of nice firewood and hauled it home. Easiest firewood i ever cut, right on the landing, no limbs etc to move, just block it up and haul it.
Seeing the footage on the Weather Channel this morning,my thoughts go out to those on the Lake Huron /G Bay sores who got pounded with this" blizzard". Reminds me of the storm of '77 /'78 we had down here.Stay warm ,the weekend looks lot better!

We moved from BC to Ontario and that week was hit wih that storm in 77. I thought to myself as a kid that we moved to the arctic....from 10 degree winters
to this......I had never seen snow as a kid stick to the ground past 1 day. I remember playing road hockey in the afternoon as it snowed in the morning but melted by lunch....I still scratch my head sometimes and think we did my folks move from BC to here....lol
-36c here, up on the hill, -40c at the bottom of the hill. Just a touch of breeze, went out to plug the car in, cord was so stiff could hardly bend it. Didn't stay out there too long !
