Well, actually it started last night when the boss said " go to work" even though I knew the schools would be closed today, Then no room in the Auto Shop and my starter froze overnight! I laid under it in -39C windchill with a heat gun for over an hour until it finally started. Coulda had something to do with taking a run at the tall drifts on the driveway last night on the way to work. Any way, when I got home I couldn't even pull in the drive there was so much snow - thick snow. Parked at the neighbour's and left it running in case it didn't start again while I went to start the plow. Cranked very slow for a minute then caught - what is that racket? Seems the oil pump didn't like that molasses in the pan and didn't quiet down until I was done sweeping it off. Jump in, in gear....sorta. The trans fluid was a little thick too I guess, and the truck was very lethargic.
OK, a couple of swipes with the plow, park the van inside to dry out the starter and I should be in bed by 9:30. NOT SO FAST! The Bronco plow truck I use has auto locking front hubs, which were definitely frozen and not working. Thick heavy snow is impossible to move with one wheel drive. Plan B, normally B is for beer, but this time I reached for the snowblower, while not outside, still very cold in the attached garage. The oil was so thick I felt like I ripped my arm off trying to get a couple revolutions. Plan C is usually for cold beer, but instead I dragged the cold Blower into the mudroom and set up a portable heater to do it's magic while I started hand bombing the piles outside with a common shovel. About this time the Missus comes out to tell me there is no water up stairs.
I come in, good excuse to warm up anyway, set up a couple of heaters, crank the furnace up, crack the taps a little and wait. Went out to shovel some more. Chase a few pipes with a paint stripper heat gun and got all but one line opened up. Oh crap, my van is still running two doors down, the snow thrower is gonna need gas and the plow is running low too best fill a couple of cans. I took a chance and shut the van off upon my return.
Tired of shovelling, I refocus on the snow thrower and after over an hour of trying, tinkering adjusting and trying some more, it fired up!I guess that stabilizer in the gas is JUNK! Over 2 more hours of throwing and it was basically drifting back in as fast as I was removing it. Van is in the garage...unheated, crossing my fingers for tonight. Anyway in at 2:30PM and ready to crash - It will soon be time to get up and do it all again!!!! Trying to warm up in front of the gas fireplace, but the pilot keeps blowing out. NOW WHAT!!!
~ RUNNING ON EMPTY.... -39C wind chill sucks the big one!

I know how you feel Fordy!!
I'm got home on Sat. Had to remove the lag bolts from the gate to get into the back yard. Bottom of the gate was frozen in about 3" of ice. Finally get into the house to find out that the fuel line into the house froze up. Got the propane blast furnace in the house to thaw out the pipes. Went back to work and brought the big rig home. (gives me a place to sleep while working on the house) Finally got fuel line thawed out and furnace running. Late Monday afternoon, PUC shows up to change the cracked meter. Then I started replacing busted lines. Fix a line, turn on the water, find another leak, turn off the water. Fix that leak, turn on the water, find another leak, turn off the water. 11 leaks later, still don't have the water on. Fingers crossed that there is no more after this last leak. Had to cut a hole in the master bedroom to get at the shower fixtures. So now have some dry walling to do too.... Still have to see if the washing machine works and install the new water heater that I bought a month ago. House has a steel roof. Well the ice and snow slide off the roof and took out the awning over the front door. So I now have that to fix...

Roasted 2 belts on the snowblower last 2 days.......Guess I am lucky thats all that happened.....famous last words, now I wont sleep tonight wondering whats gonna screw up
I'm a little pissed off got up extra early to put the garbage and blue box out and they never showed, bastards, yesterday I could understand but today! Who do these people think they are Ontario Teachers, my God.
Thanks for the support guys....Grumps....I.......I better not say. Ziggy: Wow. I think if I had have left it any longer, I would have had some split pipes too! I think that was the issue with the gas fireplace pilot and fire dying out as it's on the windy side- frozen gas line. Glad the furnace stayed on though!!! Fireplace got to be staying lit once we got more heat in the room - then I went to bed.
This has been the most challenging 48 hours of my life so far, and I felt like just throwing my arms up and toss in the towel a few times, especially when a new problem presented itself. Luckily, as you knock down one challenge after another your mind is just busy getting it done and you don't even realize how tough a day it was until it's all fixed- then you pass out.... from exhaustion....physical and mental.
The only thing not really fixed yet is the plow truck, but as the temps soar to -11c on Wednesday, all that heat might free up the frozen automatic locking hubs (worst invention ever)....or I might bring it in the shop and heat it with the wood stove to bring it up to above zero - currently about -4C in there right now. I have not had time to keep a fire lit in there this week.
I'm anxiously awaiting the above zero temps forcasted, hell, -11c will feel balmy at this point!
So, the "Everything is Broken" title was in reference to a Bob Dylan tune that was haunting me all day yesterday and I really wanted to post a youtube vid to go with the post, but was VERY busy and now I'm at work and can't do from here. It's an entertaining song so if someone could post it for me I would appreciate it.
My 5 hour snooze today put just enough gas back in my tank to get my through Wednesday and I should be back on track by Thursday.
Thanks for putting up with my rant, I'll let you know how it all turns out in my book! ~ Fordy

Thanks for the tip T, but I was so busy I didn't even get any water til just before I was 'lights out! I finished off the last of the tall cans o' beer on New Years Eve too, so that wasn't an option either - which reminds me, I've got to restock the beer fridge. (easy problem to fix for a change!!!)

After having several heart attacks and being on deaths door
Daily problems dont seem that bad anymore
When things get bad. Real bad. I have found a little levity is not a bad thing
Sorry if it did not have the desired effect of calming things down
Theres ALWAYS tommorrow
But not for some of us!
Thank the powers that be you were smart enough
Resourcefull enough and had the capacity to deal
l with your issues
Just sayin
Not to worry Glenn, I wasn't in 'advance editor' mode when I typed that "better not say" comment or there would have been a "nudge nudge wink wink" added. I do realize there are folks out there with bigger issues to deal with, and I'm fortunate so far health wise, but to have so many things go wrong all at the same time was almost more than I could chew in my current state of mind. I was bombarded, and nearly overwhelmed beyond anything I have ever experienced before. Each issue on it's own would have been a 'piece of cake', but it was the next thing around the corner and over lapping of chaos that had me teetering on the edge. Fortunately all is good now with the temps rising, I just have to open the end of my driveway up again as it got packed pretty high likely right after I left for work at 10:30 last night - pictures to follow.

Fordy,we all have days like that and sometimes venting is the only way to keep your sanity. So far this winter it seems like everybody is in," whats next", mode.We all know that there is always someone worse off than we are ,but sometimes you do feel like the last guy.Just a couple of months till cruissin season. Ed
Ziggy was right, no Dylan version of "Everything is broken" found, but here is the lyrics - great tune! :
Broken lines broken strings Broken threads broken springs Broken idols broken heads People sleeping in broken beds Ain't no use jiving Ain't no use joking Everything is broken.
Broken bottles broken plates Broken switches broken gates Broken dishes broken parts Streets are filled with broken hearts Broken words never meant to be spoken Everything is broken.
Seem like every time you stop and turn around Something else just hit the ground Broken cutters broken saws Broken buckles broken laws Broken bodies broken bones Broken voices on broken phones Take a deep breath feel like you're chokin' Everything is broken.
Everytime you leave and go off someplace Things fall to pieces in my face Broken hands on broken ploughs Broken treaties broken vows Broken pipes broken tools People bending broken rules Hound dog howling bullfrog croaking Everything is broken.

All is well inside, stupid auto-locking hubs still aren't co-operating on the plow, the snow blower starts on the first pull though - good thing too! Here is what I came home to at 7:30 am:
Not blown in too bad, but the end was plowed in.... a lot! :
It was like concrete and I had to break it up a little at a time before the snow blower would take it.
I'm glad the wind finally took a pill!!!

I have the opposite problem.
My electric furnace won't shut off.
The thermostst is OK. I think the big relay must be stuck inside.
Welded contacts or something.
Trouble is, I can't see if it comes apart to clean the contacts.
I let it run for a while then shut off the furnace breaker.
I'll dig in to it further tomorrow.

They're usually a solid state relay (no moving parts). Disconnect the 24v signal feed to see if that shuts it off.
Not trying to make ya feel poorly Fordy but it sounds like you're having one of my days - except for a change this time around things were alright here.
Tractor started, yep, the hydraulics were slow 'til the fluid warmed up - but it started!
The snow-blower just broke a shear bolt - but I gave it to my daughter and son-in-law last year. They broke it so they'll fix it. He's a mechanic so no biggie.
One of our rental houses has had issues with frozen pipes in the past, but the remedy last time it happened prevented it happening again with this chill. Nice.
All the vehicles started and stopped - with exception to the ice rink at the end of the driveways. Fixed that by emptying the ash barrel from my woodshop ( nicely getting rid of the ashes at the same time). Bonus.
All the electric motors on my tools worked and the cast tops weren't so cold that my skin stuck to them. Actually had that happen once, was out shovelling snow, went in the barn, took my glove off, laid a sweaty hand on a table saw - stuck. Dammit.
While I agree with Grumps - having been injured pretty badly and learned since that there are worse things in life than a frozen tap - it doesn't mean I / we don't sympathize. I'm pretty certain we've all had those days. I like your style of delivery though, has a comic prose to it.....it ya can't laugh at yourself.....ya know?
It was -52 with the windchill here the other day. Had the truck plugged in , went to start it and it turned over very slowly but fired up. The belts, power steering and everything else squealed like a pig being murdered. Seats were like concrete, put my foot on the brake to see what they were like and I couldn't push them down.... the brake fluid was nearly frozen. Decided to let it warm up for 45 minutes ... went outside and moved it , the tires were square and took a few kilometers for them to take shape.
My little 2.2L Saturn car which has no block heater and hadn't been started in a week turned over very slowly but fired up after a few turns . It squealed also and only half the cluster panel lit up . 45 minutes later she was good to go also.
Strange things happen at deep temperatures. Back awhile ago i saw a 350 engine in a plow truck that was used to open logging roads, they got it started, but no oil pressure.?????????
After investigation and ending up pulling the pan, the shaft for the oil pump had sheared off!
(No 0W30 in it, but there is now!!)
I was in Northern BC one winter when the power went out. We lit some candles for lighting and when it was time to crawl in to our -60 sleeping bags, we couldn't blow out the candles. They were frozen. I just snapped off the flame and put it in a box for the night.
No?
Then there was the time we were sitting around shooting the breeze and the temperature plummeted. We were talking but our voices were getting harder to hear. We went to bed and when we got up in the morning, we could hear all this noise as our voices thawed out.
No?
Did I ever tell you about the time we went ice fishing?
We drilled a hole in the ice and opened a can of peas which we put around the opening.
When the fish came up to take a pea.......oh never mind....you wouldn't believe me any way.

The way I heard it was :
How to trap an elephant. Dig a 10'X20' hole. It's gonna hafta be at least 8' deep or he'll just walk right outta there, but it's OK - he won't get hurt because you are going to line the bottom 4' with ashes to cushion his fall. Once the hole is ready, because you won't have any idea which way he's coming from, you will have to line the entire perimeter with peas - then you hide and wait...and wait.... When he finally comes, you sneak up on him and as soon as he stops to take a pea, you kick him right in the ash hole!!!!

OK, one more....
The circus was in town and the elephant escaped. It managed to run a way out in the country where there were lots of farms. A farmer looked out the window and saw this great big creature in his cabbage patch. He didn't know what it was. He called the local sherrif and told him there was this really big critter with two tails, in his cabbage patch and was pulling up all his cabbages and the sherrif would never guess where this big critter was shoving them....or sumthin' like that.
OK. I'm done.
