While suturing a cut on the hand of a 75 year old rancher, who’s hand was caught in the gate while working cattle, the doctor struck up a conversation with the old man. Eventually the topic got around to Harper and his role as our Prime Minister . The old rancher said, ‘Well, ya know, Harper is a ‘Post Turtle”. Not being familiar with the term, the doctor asked him, what a ‘post turtle’ was. The old rancher said, ‘When you’re driving down a country road and you come across a fence post with a turtle balanced on top, that’s a ‘post turtle’. The old rancher saw the puzzled look on the doctor’s face so he continued to explain. ‘You know he didn’t get up there by himself, he doesn’t belong up there, he doesn’t know what to do while he’s up there, he’s elevated beyond his ability to function, and you just wonder what kind of dummy put him up there to begin with’.

I was a "newer immigrant" in 1954....parents dragged me here behind them. We were all immigrants at one time.
I dont see that the newer people to this country causing all these issues....Its the slimeball politicians who try and cater to these groups to get their votes. Like most of us older immigrants, the newer people would just settle into the new country if all these carrots were not dangled in their faces.
Old Immigrants came here with nothing more than the clothes on their backs and a few pennies. They came here to work hard and build Canada to the great Country it once was.
New Immigrants are coming here and raping all the rewards it has to offer. Hell, they come here and are offered lodging, money, health care, jobs while some older Canadians are barely living above the poverty line.
I was watching the news a week ago showing the swearing in of "New" Canadians, and it made me sick !! More than half were Seniors !! As if our health care system wasn't overloaded enough, here you have "New" Canadians chomping at the bit to get free healthcare without putting a dime into it.
I have no problem letting new Canadians into our Country, but they must be young enough to be able to work for a minimum 25 years and speak English.

This is where we need growth. Young workers to contribute to jobs and pay taxes. I don't care what colour you are as long as you are honest and hardworking. Hell, you could be 3 shades of green.
Likewise language...speak your mother tongue at home all you want. Teach your children both as heritage and culture is important - but acknowledge that English is our official language outside of your home

The Government first, but then I blame the Immigrants. Not because they came here ( I would do the same) but because they have infiltrated all levels of our Government and are now changing laws to suit their own agendas. We're screwed, and there's no way to fix the system.
I said I would not get into debates, so I will tread lightly.
Just remember the true "original" citizens of this country...look what we did to them and their country. Us whining about changes that suit our immigrants is pretty minor compared to what our ancestors did 200 years ago, and we roll our eyes at the ongoing land disputes from people who got the shaft so many years ago??
We aren't "screwed", its a matter of perspective.

Hey Hemi, I'm not sure what program you were watching, but oh my god it must have been biased...
As a fresh import, I can assure you it is not easy to get into Canada, and once you get here, you are really not impressed with the Canadian government.
As an applicant, you must follow one of 50 streams to get in. They range from temporary working visas from 1 to 3 years, up to permanent resident visas like we have. But trust me, you need to jump through a LOT of expensive hoops, and sit on your thumbs for a long time with no correspondence coming from Canada. I know of some professional people who are still waiting after 7 years.
As a professional person (skilled profession route), you need to prove you are qualified and get your qualifications re-assessed by a Canadian body, get references from past employers for the last 10 years, get police reports from EVERY country you have resided in, get an expensive medical exam for every member of your family, get legal documentation for any children you are taking if you are no longer with the mother/father, prove you can support your family financially in Canada for a reasonable amount of time till you find work, take an English Language exam (that includes people born and bred in the UK), be young enough to qualify, and if your application takes over a year to process, you need to do all of that again, and pay for everything again.
We sat in Scotland for 18 months after sending our applications, with no idea if we were going to be accepted. You don't have a phone number to call, and any email you send gets an automated response of "we will update you with any changes"
Have you guys searched for where your families actually came from? Five years ago I got sick and was housebound so I decided to find out. Like Dave we're from Scotland, and immigrated in 1850 to Sarnia Lambton. Traced back as far as 1630 Old Deer Scotland and sideways 20 or so times removed. If there's a Lawrence name on it we're probably related to it, it's like they were competing with rabbits.
Don't have a problem with anyone striving for a better life as long as they work for it. It's the government that's broken.
You waited so long Dave because you immagratted from a first world country
If you had applied from a third world country, a limo would have been waiting
at your door before the ink dried on the application
Amen to that. We came over in 1948, just after the war with some furniture, clothes, and that was about it. We were not allowed to take money out of Holland. Our family worked their tails off to better ourselves, eventually purchasing a farm. Nothing handed out to us, and I'm sure that my dad wouldn't have accepted it even if it was offered Too proud for that

But hey, it was all worth it
The thing is, Dave, we need and want immigrants like yourself. Educated, willing to work, have assets and speak English. It's not fair that you had to jump through loops to get here. It doesn't make sense !!
People living in North Bay wearing blinders have no idea how things have changed because of SOME(not all) of these Immigrants. It doesn't affect them!! I grew up in Scarborough in the 70s and 80s, where it was still safe to walk at night and to raise a Family. In 20 years the place is destroyed because of the $hit they let into this Country. Anyone I speak to including most Guys from this forum feel the way I do. If you don't feel there's a problem, then you need a reality check !!
I'm starting to sense that the discontent here is not so much about immigrants... Of one particular colour... It's about all the ones that don't match that colour chart... And I sure hope I'm wrong.
I hate nobody....except for racists

No !! We got into this crap before and some of you right away throw up the racist excuse!! It has something to do with people coming over here and changing our ways of life to suit their own. If some lazy a$$ white 80 year old Russian decides to come here and claim refuge status, then I say ship him back on the next plane and deny him entry. Period !! Japanese aren't white, but we don't see too many of them immigrating to Canada. Why is that ??We could use them !! Unfortunately most of the garbage that come here are people of colour. If you want to raise the racist flag because of that, that's your prerogative.
We just had another black move in to our neighbourhood the other day 2 doors down.
Its a black with gorgeous patina 47 Chevy truck. Still in beginning build stage.....and the guy has it sitting in pieces outside in the snow/not covered.(S10 frame)
I stopped to ask him about it this morning and he has no where to store/ work on it.
My only problem with this situation is although no chop/channel and wants ac/stereo ect........ he wants fresh paint
Might have room in my shop for it.
Owner??? immigrant. Nice guy. We'll get past language barrier I'm sure.

I guess I lied about hating nobody...there's a lot of people I hate:
Besides Racists, I also hate molesters and child abusers, rapists, wife beaters, animal abusers, thieves, swindlers, war mongers, ....hmmm what else? I'm sure I missed some. I guess that list involves politicians and catholic priests.
So if my strong views based on ethics offends anyone, tough s**t.
This is why I need to stay out of debates.

Obviously trying to make a point that we're allowing the wrong people into Canada has been turned into a racist issue (again)!!
So if my strong views based on ethics offends anyone, tough s**t.
Well, the way I see it, if you want to bring your parents, siblings, aunts, uncles etc. here, then you should be responsible for them for at least 5 years. In other words, you are responsible to make sure that they don't need to suck money out of the government for anything, including food, medical, dental, etc. etc. etc. That's the way it was when we immigrated. We had a farmer in Manitoba that sponsored us, to make sure we weren't a burden on society.
