It's the moment you've all been waiting for!

No more mock-ups, it's build time.

I was late getting down to Grumps tonight, so only had a couple of hours before the neighbourhood curfew kicked in.

But I'm excited to have made a start.

(all I did was take the pictures so far)

The first cut is the deepest...

Sunny's truck over-sees the proceedings...

Squaring up the front section..

Cutting out the front notches..

First weld

Someone looks jealous of the attention.....

I would just like to say Glen is very good and competent

Car fabricator. If he tells me something is good

I will believe him. Likwise if something wont work

I will believe him again. Glenn has built and modified

Many cars over the years and if he was building

my car I wouldn't question any of the work he was

Doing.

Nice to have you share your knowledge

With us here on the forum.

Dave is a lucky guy to have you share with him

in buiding his ride.

Dave watch , listen, and learn!!!

It's not glenns first ride on the merry go round

You can also weld aluminium with a mig

Reverse the polarity, buy a spool gun,

And change the gas and a spool

Of aluminum wire

Just sayin

oh most certainley, i have a spool gun for my mig machine.  i might try my hand at aluminum intake fabbing.  aluminum mig is actully quite good since you can point and shoot and feed the material into the joint

I think most here realize the learning opportunity generously being offered to Dave by Grumps.
Good on ya Glenn.
And enjoy your build Dave. I know we will through your posts.
Post away and we can all learn from it.

I just want to say thanks for the private post for support

For those that are interested. Here are the specs on the frame

2x3 3/16 mikd steel. I ordered 30 ft which should be more than enough

For all frame and cross members

Its 20" inside and 24" outside frame. The front kick will be 3" and the back will

Depend on Daves car when he gets it here

I uee a 3" round 1/4 for the front spring perch

I have found these measurements work best for older cars (early 30s)

It fits the front cowl section and still wide enough for all motor and rad requirments

I square all sections as i go and by doing this you can square a frame within an 1/8

I have found 3/16 frames are good enough for cars under 2500 lbs

All welded frame sections will be braced and plates for strength

This is now the 6th frame i have built like this and have found tgem to work very well

With little to no flex over 13 feet

I will have Dave show pics of the plating details

I also use 1x1 to keep the frame square while under construction

Thank for your interest and positive support of Daves first rod project

If you have questions. I will do my best to answer

The welding horse has been flogged dead. Lets move on

PLEASE !

Dave 'n' Grumps off and runnin'!! biggrinbiggrin

Great job on documenting the first stages of 'the build' guys! "The first cut" is always one the most exciting times of creating a dream.

I'm definitely going to enjoy following this thread.  smile

Thanks for sharing!

You guys have me worried. I bought a millermatic 135 running on 220. I'm going to make this clear up front ..I'm not a welder. I got the mig because I'm really bad at stick and not much better at mig but I had to do it myself. I had to weld on shock mounts. First I burnt through them then I think I got the right settings and welded them on. Seem to work but I'm worried I should have had them stick welded. Am I screwed or is this going to be a wait and see if they break kind of thing?

No  just read up and learn the machines limitations and stay within them. Get some scrap metal and burn a spool or two practicing you'll be better in no time.

And now....TIG welding aluminum uses a rod, yes?
MIG welding uses a rod, just quite skinny, yes?
I used to do some welding years ago. I had to weld some brackets in an elevator shaft and had to stamp my number on them. No one ever came to look at them. At one time I had a u69 ticket. Pressure vessels. etc.
The right tool in the right hands will do a good job.
So what if the frame falls apart in 6 months, it's only a Scotsman. Lots more where they come from.
All the best Dave, I hope it all comes together for you.

Love it VERY adjustable. Would recommend to anyone

I bought it on sale with all accessories for $950

I think they are regular $1400

I used an old lincon 180 forever untill i wore it out

One thing I've learned is there is always more than one way to tackle a job with good results. Pre-heating, welding both sides, beveling joints, different rod material. You can gitter done with a 175 in my humble opinion. If you are building a space shuttle, then ya, go with bigger amperage.

I'm so happy I started watching this post. Not only did i learn to always ask some behind the counter sales guy how to build my next frame, BUT I learned how to turn a bag into a bowl.

Keep up the good work Glenn and Dave!!!!

If you need an aluminum rad for it, buy a core and fittings (cheap) and I'll make you the tanks for the cheap price of 1 beer. Grisdale sells Howe products.

Day 2

I forgot my camera, so used Grumps and Andrews Iphones...

IMG_20140115_214409530.jpg

The little one by one's are just temporary spacers

IMG_20140115_214423055.jpg

IMG_20140115_214332479.jpg

Made us some 5 inch legs, as this will be the ride height

Starting to look like a kick ass frame!

IMG_2479.jpg

Meanwhile...

Andrew took my spindles up the road to press in the bushings and hone them to size

IMG_20140115_232621478.jpg

IMG_20140115_234452902.jpg

Big day Saturday. Taking the body down so we know how bick a kick it's getting at the back of the frame.

thats pretty much the same way i made the frame in my rat rod truck, i tapered the front rails from 4 inches to 3 inches as i wanted it to look a bit less like just rectangular tubing, i also tapered them in 4 inches from the kick up to the front

I was saying that to Glenn last night. Once he starts his next project, and we're both going at it, it will hopefully inject some encouragement into the forum for everyone to get er done
