Epoxy Primer

Hey All! I'm at the point where I'm ready to install some patch panels in my 51 Chevy truck project. I have to replace both inner and outer cowls by the door hinge pillar panels and floors. My concern is after the inner and outer cowls are welded in, Access to paint, coat or spray will be impossible. I've found builds on the web that either spray or brush on a 2K epoxy primer. The products they use are not available to me or can't be shipped. What are all you local builders here using and how do you finish an area like this? Is there a product at say, NAPA, Carquest etc that is quality stuff. It would be nice to find a local supplier but would like to use quality products first.

Cheers!

I use the "expired" primer we use at work, I can't remember exactly what it's called, but it's a Zinc Chromate base primer, it's an olive green colored product.
It's not sold to the public, never has. It's highly toxic if sprayed, I brush it on. It's also fairly hard to sand, as it packs the paper.
I use it in hidden areas mostly.

It's a product used in the Aerospace, it's extremely durable. I can get you a few quarts, we dispose of it once it hits the "expiry date" almost monthly, which is totally bogus, the product is still perfectly good to use, but not good enough for the US Air Force.

I only grab what I'll use, since I don't want to inventory it, lol.

Let me know, I'll grab some for you at our next clean out.

I won't ship it, but I could drop it off, or arrange to have it dropped off.

we've been using a lot of a product called One Step self etch primer. Seems to be working well for us. Can be purchased in a rattle can at NAPA.

To get the primer in between welded seams and panels, use a syringe. I get mine from TSC, and grind the needle to a dull point. Activate your epoxy and shoot it liberally into the seam. I had to do this to the body of my car because I had it acid dipped which removed all traces of paint, primer and rust from places that would otherwise not be reachable with spray methods. Do all these places first before you epoxy prime the panels.

Thanks 427Carl!

I will check out NAPA slab. Good idea hemi43. I will definitely be using that one.

Would you be able to pick it up in Odessa? I have a friend coming here this weekend, he'll be heading back to Odessa Sunday evening. In the meantime, I'll try to gather some fresh "expired" stuff.

Hey Gilles; FYI, if that primer you're using is in fact a 2-part "zinc chromate"primer, the clear part is "phosphoric acid" and makes an excellent metal wash for etching bare steel just by itself. What brand is it??

I don't know the brand it is, off hand, but it is a 2- part. We mix it half and half. I'll try and find out tonight.

If the one half looks like water, then that's phosphoric acid. Good stuff !!

It's from a company called AkzoNobel.

Correction, the mix ratio is 3:1.
