Mopar transmission question

Has anyone installed a overdrive tranny in an older Mopar? Can I install a lockup converter in my 727? or would I have to change the whole transmission? For the amount I drive the van I,m wondering if it,s cost efficient to do the tranny as well as change the gears in the diff.

Pretty sure you need a lock up trans, there is a switch etc in there, not just the convertor

My car uses a 518, which is basically a 727 with an overdrive. If your van currently has a non-lockup 727, then it will always be. A lockup 727 is a totally different transmission. The best advice I can give you, is find a 1992 donor van or pickup with a non-electronic 518 and bolt it into your van. These were available with, or without lockup converters. Unlike the GM overdrives, you will need an external signal like a switch to activate the overdrive. If you decide to use a lockup 518, let me know and I will explain how to make an excellent control box to activate the overdrive and have the converter lockup automatically.
