They had a program on viruses the other night Interesting fact is that you are 5 to 9 time more likely to get a virus from surfing religious sites than an actual porn sites. So I asked the girlfriend for permission rather than begging for forgiveness. She handed me a bible..lol Not
It seems to me that E-mails are the bigger source of the viruses....from my perspective anyway. So many scammers trying to **** people up these days, and for what? I guess they could be in the computer industry and need to move software or even hardware, in serious cases.
My virus protection seems to work well, warning me of a potential threat before I actually open it.

I tend to agree with Fordy about the e-mail thing you have to be carefull what you open, so far we'v been pretty lucky..just yesterday got another one of those phone calls from an east indian sounding guy claiming he was calling from windows. Wants me to open my computer to him so he could fix it..this about the forth time so I play with him for about ten minutes,,,in the end he says I XXXX YOUR WIFE XXXHOLE....not from windows I think....

Just tell them you have an apple, they just shut up and the line goes dead.
some e mail may have something that hurts a lot more than viruses .
My wife got an email yesterday and it look like a real bank notice well written .......it was saying that her on line account had been close at the bottom was written to re-open the account click to apply .............if she would have taken the bite she would had end up sending those crooks all the bank info to break in the account...........that would have been a real expensive virus $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
Dead give away is if they ask you to do anything before you are logged into your account. somewhat like the site here if you get an email notice all it will say is you have a new private message. as for the bank even if they provide a link I would exit and use my own. these guys can set up some convincing dummy pages that look to be the real thing
Its an OK vid, Realli simplified but gets the gist across.
I've been a mac/linux user for most my life, but on my windows boxes, I'll run something like AVG free.
The key is, as the vid says, run only one AV program, they will get in to a swordfight. Its not really about competition but its usually got something to do with the fact that how AV programs work, its just better to run one, they will see the other program as suspicious based on how much its doing etc.
Most viruses can be avoided by safe browsing habits. Even then, it can be hard to tell friend from foe... I run script and ad blockers on my browsers which helps alot.
Great example, if you are searching for a piece of software, there will be some ads at the top. Sometimes those ads are links to compromised sites or files.
Screen shot attached.
The big danger these days, isn't the old-school malware that pumps ads, or the annoyance viruses, but its the stuff that digs through your system and looks for financial info, or keylogs when you go into your online banking/other account, or cryptolocker, a virus that encrypts all your documents, pics etc, and demands payment to get them back. Sucks if you don't back your stuff up...
Cryptolocker is a real bastard. None of my users have had issues yet, and we've done what we can to block it on our file servers and systems, home users
and smaller businesses who don't do offline/versioned backups are still at risk.
