Hey every one .....i'm looking at doing a really nice very black satin black paint job on my old 66 Pontiac ..... any recommendations on paint type to use? I was going to use John Deer Blitz Black enamel with a hardener but and going towards a lot more expensive 2 part urethane with a satin clear coat ....any ideas ! thanks j
you don't want my advice then, a pint of gloss, a pint of flat, mix it together, good foam roller and some cardboard to cut in around the windows, done in an afternoon

no shyt eh? I wouldn't recommend that to anyone with a car worth painting, although I have pulled off some nice roller jobs for folks who have little money and want their car to be one colour at least
fatstax,
did you have something to do with a lime green roller paint job on a mid 80's Caprice Classic? Never forget that one on my street growing up. I swear the old man would paint it each spring.
Don't know about that one 58Chevy but he did have something to do with a green Ford truck running around our area for a long time .I once saw it on its roof ,dented the roof but never even scratched the rolled on Fatstax special paint. Ed

i had nothing to do with that one but ive painted alot of cars over the years, some with le roller and some legit sprayed. i might set up a paint booth this summer and do some painting. i picked up a decent HVLP setup last fall.
The John Deere Blitz Black they sell in Canada is water based and I haven't heard good things about it. You have to smuggle the older Enamel, Hardener and Thinner over the boarder.....

I changed that roof after Ed, my stepfather ED rolled the truck and had him back on the road the same day.
funnily enough I have pulled off some epic paint jobs on vehicles wit a brush and roller....mind you it was either satin black or army green so you can't really go wrong with those colors ! I used a small cloth roller every time . I spray most things now though with a HVLP gun but for some paints and applications I find rollers are best ! I painted a nice landrover 101 with a roller too !
Napa in Brantford is now carrying Matrix paint system which is solvent based but meets all the regulations for Canadian sales. Eastwood paint can be purchased through Frank at Hawks and brought into Canada no problem. Eastwood carries some flat black urethanes more than likely very close to the summit product line. I have limited experience with the eastwood paint but have used it with some success. Frank has used it a lot if I understand him correctly. He would be the one to enquire with.

I just did my 58 in PPG Ralleye Black, single stage enamel. Makes the Blitz Black look grey when side by side.
Wow that looks nice .....no satin clear coat then ? where did you get the PPG and what reducer did you use ?
Ive seen this car I think outside a supermarket in Cambelford last summer !?
Thanks, but it certainly was someone else's ride. The longest drive I've done since getting it done is from my trailer behind Cobo Hall into our ELTA display last week.

Thanks hemi43 I painted it two years ago and there has been no fade and it is easy to keep clean as well. I am impressed for the price to say the least money well spent.
The Fleet Essentials from PPG comes as a kit, hardener reducer and the paint The bumpers were painted with AWL-GRIP which is an aircraft and marine paint made for harsh environments. The flat copper is House OF Color. The copper cost me more than the black after shipping and the dangerous goods. One of my buddies did a car with tremclad flat black. We added urethane hardener and used lacquer thinners to reduce it. The job looked great and the paint is rock hard. we sprayed a test panel first and after it was cured we took a ball peen hammer to it. We could not get it to chip and the scratch test was better than most 2K urethanes. His car still looks great with no sun fade or blotching.
