hey you don't need an expensive collector car to build a super cool ride , all you do need is a decent quality mig welder (Lincoln or Miller and 22volt) and  a 4-1/2 grinder   and loads of ideas ! .....check this out .rat-rod.jpg

 Know thats Kool...

What we do and what we have was not built overnight. Some, like me, have taken 35+ years to accumulate the tools and machines we have. The best advice I can give is research what you want, and go to as many auctions as possible. 9 out of 10 auctions will be a disappointment, but that 1 will be like winning the lottery. As far as time, you have to discipline yourself to  make the time, and push yourself to get your project done. It's not always fun !! It's never too late..

Here is some serious wisdom. ^^^^

I'm 34 and between my cars and electronics, I have spent the past 16 years getting my hands on tools and gear. Most of it, gargage sales, hamfests/carshows/kijiji. Also Canadian tire has some bitchin christmas sales. Example, I never could afford one of those professional mechanic tool boxes. My friend's brother retired, had been holding on to this craftsman toolbox from the 60s-70s for his kids, they ain't interested, I got it for a song... You keep your eyes open over the years and make do. Some stuff you compromise on, I've bought crappy princess auto stuff for the one-time I needed or, or borrowed/rented.

I just moved across Canada, got my eyes on an engine hoist on kijiji, and then after that, I expect I'll need another mig welder. Lucky if I find the welder at the price i want in the next six months.. I will. It'll talk time.

Its totally never too late. We are all still learning stuff, just different levels of skill is all.

I honestly think sometimes it would be easier and more "fun" to just go get a loan and buy a finished driving car for those starting out that don't have the cash on hand. Not to be discouraging but man it takes a lot of work and dedication that not everyone has. Kijiji is full of those that started hardcore then fizzled out before having fun. For the payment on a Civic you could have a decent ride and be involved, learn by keeping her up and going, upgrade as needed.

I personally enjoy the build more than anything but I also have been born and raised on this. Have my ticket, tools and shop. I'm VERY lucky and know it.

The no time cause I have kids excuse? Naaa, don't buy that one. Sure our time is not as free as it once was but it takes balance. My wife knows I need time for myself and I uphold my end by always putting them first. We have six kids (2yrs-18), here's the youngest (my only son) this morning. He told me, "we're going to the shop Daddy, let's go".

I've had to buy a lot of my tools and equipment for work but what I've done for years is every time I have a large home or car project I allow one major tool purchase in my budget. The larger the project the more I spent on tools or equipment

Thx for the tool tips fella's! I think I can swing that with the wife. Shes pretty reasonable.

Hey Hemi, thx for invite but had to put some time in with wife and kid yesterday cuz they were leaving for a couple days. Would've liked to come down and share a beer or three and meet some fellow rodders. Maybe next time, considerin it is only an hour away..but with my lead foot, I bet I could do it in 40. :P

I got some wrenches and a socket set for bday last year from my wife, and I have a mastercrap impact for my compressor.. I also have access to oxy-acetylene when ever I need...so what would you guys suggest for the next purchase?
I wanna stick welder, but would need to upgrade wiring in house...which I think I can do....I am a solar installer..and know a bit about wiring.

MIG or TIG welder would be my next purchase. Stick welding has it's uses, but very limited on a car build. 4 1/2" angle grinders are good to have also.Need at least 3 of those. Makita is my favorite, but some of the Mastercrafts aren't bad at a fraction of the price. Keep away from no-name offshore power tools. They suck!! Another important power tool to have in the shop is a beer fridge, followed closely by a TV and stereo.

i agree with dan on the 4 1/2 in grinders. i usually buy them at ctc when they are on special for $19.95 not full price. usually have 3 with different attachments grinder, cutting and wire wheel plus a couple on the shelf when they break.

Don't forget you will eventually need a ft lb & in lb torque wrench.
Breaker bars always come in handy for the stubborn rusty nutz n bolts.
