I was like 10 yrs old,,My uncle gave me my 1st slot car set,, it was mmade by Eldon ,and the cars were 69 mustang and a 68 coronet... I had already been bitten by hotrods , I remember spending hours and hours playin with that set ,,,

When I was 10 in 1964 I got a Eldon Test track set for Christmas. It was an odd set in that it was a single lane track with bumps, a section of tight esses, a timing clock and a jump. The car was a Mustang fast back.

Eldon and Strombecker were the big players back then. We used to run our Eldon cars (6 volt, I think) on the 12 volt Strombecker transformer...boy they would fly, but the motors got pretty hot.
Also used to order special motors and tires from Auto World in the US.......
My brother and I got a set for Christmas one time. Called Auto Rama Figure 8 but I don't know who made it. Bodies were along the lines of a 40 coupe. Bought a set for my grandkids 3 or 4 years ago. They like to go as fast as they can just to see the cars zing off the track....pretty much the way we did when we were kids. Things haven't changed much.
done a little slot car action at a track in Oakville , was running a 32 coach with a cox engine , I think the track was 5 or 6 lanes wide , this would have been 1964-5 , huge track , lots of enjoyment there , dent
I remember my Scalectrix (sp) set I had in the early 60's. I think I wore it out. Also remember going to the Checkerd Flag slot car track in Brantford in the mid 60's running a Stromberg. Had lot's of fun.
My first was an Eldon figure eight. then later on I started collecting afx for years planned to build a big 4 lane. Had a good collection of cars lots with the original package. Looked on ebay one day and then started selling them. RCMP police cars were getting over 100$. I was shipping them as far as Australia.
In the early '60's Dundas Hobbies was a busy spot on Saturday mornings. It was on Dundas Street in London about 2 or 3 doors east of Egerton,
I think Western Tire was across the street.
They used car batteries to power the huge track. I do remember the guys would use castor oil on the sponge tires to make them sticky.

I used to take the streetcar to a place on the Queensway near Runnimede and rent a car .Couple of bucks for hours of fun.I still have a bunch of Eldon Sets and spare cars. I did a service call last year and the customer and I got talking cars,surprize,and he asked if Iwanted to see the layout he had built .I thought it was going to be a train layout but it was a slot car set up .He had a F1 type track, aNASCAR setup and a scale drag strip.He also had about 40 of the new Carria slot cars that included hotrods.He said a group of them get together and have a race day.He had a ton of money tied up in that basement but it is his hobby so I get it. He said they have to programme the cars because they will simulate low gas and flat tires so they do have to pit in the races. Back in the day the only time the car stoped was when it fell off the track or the controller got too hot to hold. Times change. Ed
No slot cars but when I was 10 or 11 got a lionel train set used, still got it ,so it's gota be 60 years old , still works and the grand kids play with it when they get bored with with there Ipods etc.,, not...It,s a shame It rocked my world when I was a kid......
I almosy lived at a track on Lakeshore in Port Credit, butfor the life of me I can't remember the name. It was a hobby shop with a track and dragstrip. Wore a couple set of tires off my 1/24 scale Cheetah and also raced a Chapparel guess that was the start of the chevy power bug

In 65' and 66' I remember going to the place next to Chapman's bakery at Dundas and Adelaide they had a drag strip as well as the road course' Saved up forever to get a Cheetah with silicone tires. Cowan Hardware was a hot spot as well, they had a 6 or 8 lane track. Man, that was a long time ago
