New swapmeet at The Havelock Country Jamboree
Permalink

Just got an email yesterday about their new event. www.rpmhavelock.com I don't think I'll attend it for vending as they want $300 for a 20x40 spot. I think they are pricing themselves out of the market. The Barrie flea market charges $165 for a 20x30 if paid in advance and people already cry that it's too high and they are losing a lot of vendors. Stirling is $40 a spot and Lindsay is $65 Waterdown is $45 I was actually considering trying it out at the $75 they posted as the starting price but only found out it's for a 10x10 at $300 I don't feel like taking the chance. What do you guys think?

Dan

300 for a spot? are they insane?  so its at the same venue as the havelock jamboree or held at the same time as the drunkfest?

on top of that I just read..."We require all vendors to have liability insurance. All Vendors, once accepted, will be issued a Vendor Lease. This Lease will include all Terms and Conditions set forth by the RPM Show".

I have business insurance that would cover me but for the average Joe would a Homeowner Policy cover you at a swapmeet?

It's JULY 18-20 so that would make it before Drunkenfest

I guess it depends on your policy because we needed to up our insurance on the business to 2 million when we did the Stirling Truck show (RIP). My wife just told me our policy said 100k was the max for the public liability on the home insurance.

I have heard nothing but positive about the Lindsay venue, from the vendors and the general public. I think I will be attending that one this spring.

Lindsay Ex fairground is a dust bowl. The truck traffic on #7 is loud.... Jake brakes all night long. Wasn't a good experience for us when we vended during the actual Lindsay Ex that's why we never moved when the aaca did. We do well at Stirling I can't complain.

Their rules give them every way possible to toss you out but the funniest is this

Anyone causing trouble will be evicted. ZERO TOLERANCE.  When entering grounds you may be subject to a vehicle search.

I spoke to them yesterday about a site for that weekend, its pricey so I might not bother but they confirmed that all I need is a copy of my house insurance policy, that will exclude people who rent a house or apartment as they wont have it

Rockton Waterdown tried to run on same weekend in the fall of 2012 without good results. Barrie is very established and draws lots and lots of people and as a vendor there for 25+ years that is what I like to see. Where else can you go after a 24 hr rain storm and not be trenching thru mud. I still intend to do Barrie twice a year, works for me where other people I know it don't..

Most of the established vendors that "used" to do Barrie would gladly try a new event the same weekend, this would have been a very good choice for the Lindsay venue, instead they will get a mediocre crowd because they chose to compete against their own legacy. Too bad for all involved really.. Best of luck to all is the best I can offer.

And if you get muddy you can buy classy replacement clothing and boots at the next vendor

Not bad for a auto meet HUH???

I always wonder why so many people have a huge hatred for the Barrie flea market. Other than a few too many of the socks and Undies venders that is my really only complaint. I always buy cool stuff at the Barrie market but I can't say the same for the other big 3 I go to. I might vend at the Havelock show now that the price is 1/2 of what they 1st listed it at and the fact that it's a 10 min drive from my place.

So I checked it out again and if you're in the Fleamarket area it's $150 but if you're in the swapmeet area it's $185 (same size booths). I'm passing just on principal.

True there are clothes vendors there but a lot of the crowds come as couples and it gives the wifes a place to look thru and a happy wife is a happy life. I can't remember the last automotive flea market that I attended where you couldn't buy clothes or toys or signs or some non-auto related item and I vended over 30 days last year at various meets.  Unfortunately the times are a changing.

The question is, what's the difference between a swap meet and a flea market?  (other than the answer "in this case, the difference is $35)

I always thought they were the same thing.

i think traditionally the term swap meet has always been associated with automotive stuff and flea market is more of a general whatever you have sale.  myself i would think of the two as one the same.

It's quite easy to tell the difference between a swap meet and a flea market. At a swap meet, the Guy vending is usually named Dave, John or Bill.
At a flea market, the Guy vending is usually named Prathamesh,Vaishnavi or Sandeep !!

Chris I do not think Lindsay ever wants to compete against Barrie on the same weekend as there would be no point in it. Remember it has been tried before and it failed miserably after the second year with huge financial loses I would think. Several venders I know did Lindsay last year having a great time then did not reregister for Barrie this year as I did last year. Lindsay is the largest automotive flea market east of Toronto in one year at their new location. I was told over 550 vending spots filled as of the weekend and will be filled to capacity by May I would think . Also with last years car show having over 500 cars and the car coral over 160 cars both setting new records for them. As for attendance they set a record last year also. So with 25% more venders this year and if the attendance follows suit it should be a major boost for the hobby.

With all the water his year it will be a good test for muddy grounds as one my trailers weighs in at over 13,000 lb. they said there will be no problem as the grounds are drained. AACA will no doubt have some growing pains as they are settling in but that is to be expected as this is AACA 6th location change and have never looked back as every one gets better.

Hope all have a good weekend this summer wherever you land Stirling, Havelock, Barrie or Lindsay and keep this hobby rolling.

Was In Barrie vending and was visited by one of the RPM goons trying to get us on board to vend. Was told it's $150 now for both Swap meet and Flea market sections. Apparently it was a typo for the price differences.

I  hope you get reimbursed Faststax.

I'm back on the fence now I might want to try it out.
