Is there any rhyme or reason to this ( I think ) scam . If I read tea leaves and consulted an Ouija board I couldn't "get it " .
What matters in determining rates ...anything ? , or do they throw a dart at a dartboard to get your number ? Seriously .
I think I'm the kind of driver they would want but maybe I'm kidding myself . ...50 years driving , no accidents or claims , ...last ticket was 25 years ago down in Virginia , .....drive 4 km to work but it wasn't any different when I was 50 km to work .....drive a 4 door sedan ( didn't seem to matter when I drove Mustangs though ) ....no cell phone ( as if that would matter ) .
I tried Grey Power for a quote a couple of years ago ...$250 / year cheaper EXCEPT they wanted my house too and it was DOUBLE my current rate !! What a scam .
Is there a conspiracy out there to shaft everyone on car insurance ? ...sure seems like it . I'm paying $900/ year now for 1 car .

Here is another conundrum to ponder: When you buy a new car they set the rate and it's high because the replacement value is high. After 3 years, the value of your new car drops like a rock, but does your monthly rate change? By year 5 the car is likely worth less than half the amount you originally paid. Does you insurance automatically drop to half scale? Not likely! Total BS I say!!!!

It's not really car insurance, it's driving insurance. We're paying for liability and potential court cases.
Personally, I'm paying a fortune because we are new to the country, even though I've been driving for 30 years. But I don't cry too much. Driving is my vice, so I don't need to moan about the price of beer or smokes
I guess what's bothersome , Dave , is I don't have any control with adjusting it . When gasoline prices shot up , I walked and used my bicycle more ...kept my costs the same . When food prices skyrocket , I find ways of keeping my costs in check , but with car insurance , there doesn't seem to be an answer ....and I'm not even getting anything tangible with car insurance .

Woman is sitting at a stoplight, behind the line, in her lane. She is doing NOTHING wrong. Bus pulls up, a woman gets off the bus and runs, with her head down, right into the side of the car stopped at the light and knocks herself out. Cops come, ambulance comes, driver is not charged with anything.
Fast forward to insurance renewal time. Insurance company asks driver if she has had any accidents, tickets or claims. She says "nope". Insurance company then drops her as a client for "failure of disclosure". Turns out the woman who got off the bus filed a claim against the driver and the drivers insurance company paid out something like $5,000. The insurance company never even told the driver about the claim as "they are not required to do so". End result: Since you (the driver) failed to mention the accident and claim at renewal time, we have the right to drop you as a client. This also doesn't go well when searching for another source of insurance as she'll be black listed.
With the car owner doing everything legal, how is it even possible that the bus rider could even put in a claim, let alone get paid?
weather it is your fault or not you are required by your insurance company to report any incident to them. i found this out the hard way alot of years ago
I almost got caught up in something like that a bunch of years ago .......signed a car loan for step daughter who lived on her own 250 miles away ( she had iffy credit ). Unbeknownst to me she gets into an accident . Three years go by , I go to renew and they are telling me about MY accident . I had no idea what they were talking about until I tracked it down . Insurance wanted to " double dip " , jump her insurance as well as mine . Luckily I did win that battle .
years ago my nephew a new driver was driving down the road in town here driving at the speed limit cop car following him.they approached a green light where a young man was standing on sidewalk as they got right on top of young man he ran into traffic against light nephew swerved to avoid him could not body came through windshield.cop following saw the whole thing did not charge nephew with anything as he did everything to avoid hitting him.car was totaled when came time for renewal of insurance they told my brother as he was the insured that they wanted 5000 to renew policy and nephew would not be allowed to drive under policy.it was determined that young man had a will in his pocket and was determined to end his life.the insurance company at that time paid the family of dead man 10,000 this was common practice at time no matter of fault being assigned to driver.brother did not file suit as he felt family had suffered enough in doing so he lost his insurance had a hell of a time finding new company.at the time his policy with nephew was a little over 400 nephew left traumatized for years for something he had no control over.I cannot remember how many years my brother paid high rates at least 5 years
as usual when they get involved costs will spiral out of control.that will be followed by a commons investigation that takes years and years resulting in even higher cost to consumers surprise.NOT
Terry,
It pays to shop around very 3-5 years, was with State Farm for 40 years and the rate just kept going up without any reason. It didn't matter how many miles to work and even after retiring the rate didn't drop. Changed insurance companies and rate drop $200/year. Purchased a new car and the rate actually dropped.
Hey guys. I have 2 cars, house, work truck and liability insurance with the same broker. When my boys got thier licences got charged $1000 each without cars. Every year price goes up a bit. Finally had enough and spoke to a very nice lady from the broker's office who said she could find anything cheaper. Checked with Insurance Hunters online and Bob's your uncle saved $1200. You just can't sit and hope for the best.

I've learned my lesson also; I was with the same broker for over 20yrs, I never had any accidents or tickets, etc...always had at least three vehicles plus house insurance...The first claim I try to put in after all these years of paying, they denied the claim, under some bogus "cause".
I then started shopping around, well the first call saved me close to 20%, right off the bat. I've been with them for less than a year, and they are already calling, to see if I'll renew. The renewal rate will be 15% less.
I dreaded having to shop around, I hate making phone calls, and all the BS associated with it. I lucked out on the first call, maybe I could have got an even better price, if I would have made a few more calls, but I was happy with the initial savings.
well i think its also time to shop around being with State Farm for 30+. I have been treated well but i need to see what other options i have with 4 cars and house. The biggest gripe i have is WE need to have insurance to drive on the road but we all deal with private companies that have share holders.... We are dealing with a neccesity,so its like being handcuffed into a payment. When is the breaking point of the average person to pay for the rates they demand? As stated above this industry needs to have its buisness plan examined and not make profits off the public while the fat cats make great residule monthly checks on there investments....

Seems you have to shop around check with companies from other regions I ended up in Cambridge as all the pricing was the same or close in hamilton . All told with everything rolled in saved close to 3 grand a year . biggest savings where on both house's and commercial liability policy but my two trucks that are also commercial dropped as well even after paying the area premium .

Not just auto insurance
Shop around for home insurance with specific flood coverage or if you have or are putting in a woodstove
I know of some area's in Hamilton that companies simply refuse to insure and when you do find one that will cover you it will cost 3 to 4 time the rate as the same house in another area. Ghetto tax. Just like auto insurance rather the fix the problem just increase everyones rate to maintain your profit margin
My 19 year old just got his G 2 so we called the insurance to tell them he was driving. They told us he would have to be insured on the most expensive car. It turns out our 06 Caravan is worth less than the 1967 VALIANT (the wifes not happy). Anyway they said he would have to be insured on the Valiant. When we mentioned the insurance on the Valiant stated no one under the age of 25 is aloud to drive it according to there rules they told us they would look into it.

As with everything else Insurance rates were fairly affordable years ago. Then the Gov,t got involved and mandated everone must have car insurance and the flood gates opened. Rates have steadily increased ever since. Just another case of Gov,t catering to big business at the expense of the average taxpayer.
Just went through this with the insurance on my T. A good friend suggested I call Zehr insurance so I did. My family car is a lease vehicle from the company I worked for before retiring 13 years ago (so it's not in my name) and I had one claim for damage that was done while the car was parked. In fact it was hail damage. I was refused insurance because of these two issues. Another buddy recommended John Charno at Crosslands in London and he turned out to be cheaper than Zehrs plus the coverage was greater. He has my business from now on.

My wife wants me to see things from a woman's point of view, so now I spend a lot of time looking out the kitchen window
In the year 2000, I turned 18. I wanted a muscle car, but being an 18 year old male, it wasn't an option, even though I had my own inssurance for a year and a half, the price to inssure a mustang or camaro and the like was almost 4000$/year. If I couldn't have a muscle car, I would settle for at least a mid 80's rear wheel drive V8 car. I found a 1983 Cutlass Supreme 2 door Coupe. Nothing special, Brouham interior, colunm shift, bench seat, 307CID...
I bought it and inssured it. Was the same price I was paying for my 1990 S10. Life was good.
I drove the car for 2 years as it was. It was probably the cleanest G-Body you ever seen. It was my pride and joy, seeing as I was going to College to be a mechanic, the car ran better than a new one and I loved it.
Winter of 2002, I bought a 327SBC from a '65 Corvette, I re-sealed the engine, ported the heads, new intake, Carb, Headers...
I built a 700r4 for it, and changed the rear gear ratio to 3.55:1. Spring came, and I yanked the 307/200r4 and installed the 327/700r4, along with the new gear set.
I never took the inssurance off the car this whole time. The Cutlass ran strong and I was happy with it. I finally had a muscle car! My plan was to get the car appraised, and adjust the inssurance accordingly, so I sat down with my broker, but she said the policy was comming due in October 2003, and I could do my changes then. I agreed and went home. This was August.
Let me tell you that this whole time, I had never even gotten a single speeding ticket, let alone an accident.
October 2003 came, and I got my policy renual in the mail (or so I thought). It was a CANCELATION!!!
Apperently, in Ontario, if you are not 25 years old or older, and you own a vehicle that is 20+ years old, they do not have to inssure you, and can cancel your policy without telling you. And that's what happened. Now we all know what happens when your inssurance gets cancelled...You become a high risk driver.
I put the car in storage for the winter uninssured, and shopped around. I was driving that 1990 S10 for the winter, at 2700$/year because of my cancelation!
I finally found a company that would inssure a 22 year old male with a 20+ year old car, that was a High Risk Driver...Brace yourselves...6700$/year for a 1983 Cutlass Supreme. I inssured it for a month, then cancelled, and drove inssurance-less for the rest of that summer, and two following summers, until I finally sold the car. It took 5 years for my rates to come down to normal, all because I wanted a descent cruiser to drive.
Insurance has come a long way since I started driving. My first policy at 18 years old was 125.00for liability, property damage and comprehensive. I thought that was a lot since I only paid 75.00 for the car. The kicker was there was also the Govt run "Unsatisfied Judgement Fund" which was you had no insurance and the Gov t paid any claims if you had an accident , then you paid them back. They got out of that in the 70s I believe and made insurance mandatory. That started the ridiculous ride in rates. It seems the last 10 years or so the insurance companies are more about collecting your money not settling claims and the clowns in the Gov t don,t seem to care about it. Its all about the taxes they collect I presume. I feel for the young drivers these days as they are " presumed " to be bad drivers from the beginning . My grandson will turn 16 next year and I shudder to think what the insurance companies will do to him.
You stated you drove for 2 years with no insurance, You are lucky you weren t involved in an accident. $5000.00 fine and loss of license. Then your rates would be something to complain about. Glad you made it to lower rates, without any problems, even if lower rates are still too high and the insurance companies will do everything they can to avoid or delay payment.
Two weeks ago our youngest son was travelling to London. He was in the outside lane, on cruise, trying to leave space - that was immediately plugged by some *sswipe in a hurry.
He was heading for the ramp to the Redhill when a Hamilton public works pick-up truck hammered the binders directly in front of him - for no apparent reason (we figure he was answering his cell and didn't get off the roadway enough). The passenger side front of our son's BRAND NEW car met the drivers side rear corner. The fellow behind our son narrowly missed his rear, swerved around both vehicles and tossed his coffee at the pick-up driver and kept going. We found out days later this fellow( 3rd vehicle) is an acquaintance of our son, although they didn't realize it at that moment.
Took the Cops forever to arrive but before they did they wanted him to drive the car on the highway, over the Burlington bridge to the Cop shop to do the paperwork. Our son said, " are you nuts?, the car's ruined, call a tow truck"
Later our son said if I was to drive a P.O.S. on the highway the Cops would be all over me, but here they are asking me to drive an unsafe vehicle. Morons.
He wasn't charged but found at fault (typical easy out for the Cops). His new vehicle required over $10,000 to repair. His Insurance sky-rocketed. He's seriously pissed.
And the Province wonders why people drive with lapsed stickers and no Insurance.
If you are uninsured you cannot make a claim against the other guy even if he is totally at fault because you are not paying your share. Check out the farmer that got run over on his 4 wheeler, because the 4 wheeler can be registered as an off road recreational, it cannot be a farm vehicle.

not sure but if driveing without ins you might be held entirely responsiable even if it was entirely the other driver's fault as there's no way your ride should have been on the road in the first place
years ago a buddy drove part of his shin bone out of his leg at the knee after driveing his bike into the rear corner of a cordoba bumper
granted he did run into the back end of the 'doba so there wasn't much to argue about there
