Looking to get a dash cam for my trip west. Anyone have one that they are happy with? Any suggestions on make or model?

2.5 hours, it records over itself, its not meant for long recording, its meant for catching accidents or other events

I've had a dash cam for almost 2 years and flip it back and forth between my street rod and my truck. It has run flawlessly. Records in HD on an SD card. If I recall, it records about 8 hours in 15 minute increment files on 32g card, and just keeps relooping. Do some research like I did, and you'll find out that the F-500-LHD is like the small block chev of cameras. I got it off of E-bay for around $100. There's a lot of bootleg F-500s out there so buy from a reputable seller. I got mine here--->http://www.ebay.ca/itm/F500LHD-Version-V5-12-5-13T2L-GH-eye-fridently-Car-Video-Recorder-Full-HD-1080P-/131151660867?pt=US_Surveillance_Digital_Video_Recorders_Cards&hash=item1e893f8743&_uhb=1

I've bought other items from them and they are good to deal with right from China and free shipping. Not sure if you're going, but  I'll have mine with me at Pugsy's if you want to see it.

I ordered one it will be my first and for 30 bucks I can chuck it and learn a little more as I go. Not that I don't trust anyone but sometimes it gets very confusing.

The only thing to watch out for is how well the cheap one will fair in a car, mid summer when the temps can rise above 100*. Some have been known to melt and deform the casing.

So that's what's going on here.  I figured I must have missed a mandatory "Manners and Etiquette" seminar.

Thank you very much for the enlightening post.  It is very much appreciated.  Have a wonderful day all.

If you are recording a long trip for posterity, you might want to look at using a gopro. They can do time lapse, and that makes for near video....

www.gopro.com I have one the black edition. Works well, suction cupped it on to the hood of our M5 one day and it held over what may have been 120mph. Also they make a good dash-cam, as they can loop the video, meaning that when the card fills, it deletes the oldest file and starts again.

Expensive as hell though for just a dash cam.

www.blackvue.com/en/contents/sub1.asp

I will likely be putting a blackvue camera in my daily drivers. Dual channel, they are expensive though, but for what they can do, I'm fairly impressed. The model i've been looking at is the DR550GW-2ch, front and rear cameras, (like rear as rear window). GPS, they have a bump detect mode, where if you are parked and get bumped or there is motion, it comes on.

I had a F-500-LHD, or a knockoff of it.
It worked well, the power supply lighter socket thing had a problem and cooked it, problem with the supply though, not the camera. That F-500 camera saved me a big huge at-fault insurance claim, and helped nail a fraud as well... :) I'd recommend it totally for just day-to-day use, and at a decent price.

Hope that's all helpful.
