My 1964 Bel Air sedan

Recently purchased this, I paid 1,800$ with a second 283 complete engine, I want to think I got a good deal? anways, it was on the road when I bought it but it needed a bit of work. Now I'm a total noob at this stuff for the most part so I'm getting a lot of help from my father but i'm trying to do most of it myself, but I'd definitely be lost without him! haha. There were some holes in the floor, the exhaust was kind of wonky, I decided to pull the motor and paint it as well as the under the hood.

 

the day I brought it home after being in storage since november,

Pulled the motor and degreased everything.

picked up some rims and threw a paint job on them as well

threw a paint job on the motor and got some new valve covers, I'm looking into getting hei ignition so the distributer and wires are no good.

one of the studs for the carb on the intake was broken when I took the carb off and I failed at trying to extract what was left of the stud so now I'm looking into 4 barrel carbs and intakes. I was looking at a tri power intake as well but I'm not sure if I want to dive into that! haha

 

I was replacing the rear shocks and I snapped the drivers side rear lower shock bolt so now I'm looking for one of those. I'm also looking for a set of headers that would work with what I have, also looking for some dog dish hubcaps, so if anyone can hook it up in the ottawa area, hit me up! thanks.

Nice work. I've had a few 64's but don't have any parts ,sorry. Nice orig.64 dog dish caps will be pricey. Good luck.

I thought it was my glasses but it must have been my eyes..when I first looked I only got a blank picture..and Now they appeared..Looks great, A little cleaning and painting and it makes yah feel attached to your car..good idea to go with a HEI they are easy to find and trouble free..good post thanks..

thanks for the positive comments guys! i'm gonna hopefully try to get the motor in this weekend and get the floor pan welded in so I can start putting the interior back in. I was looking at the brakes last night and I guess I have to replace my axle bearing seals. I also have to figure out how to get this thing insured!

Insurance is fairly cheap if the car is original. Once you start changing things like drive train, body appearance etc., the price starts to climb.

For insurance, try a regular insurance co. Most will only insure a classic to a person 25yrs +. My kid was trying to purchase a classic a few years ago and found that no insurance co. would insure her because she was under 25.

Good Luck with the insurance hunt.

 This is the place I have used for my truck and 57 wagon, rad and gastank cleaning and sealing. I will bring my HenryJ rad and gas tank to them when I get to that point.

 I think thats my problem, every place I call assumes im looking for classic insurance, I need to tell them I'm looking to insure my car under "regular" insurnace.

thanks for this! I'm gonna give them a call.

 

So I pulled the drivers side rear axle out tonight and I'm not too sure how to get the bearing seal in, do I need to remove the bearing from the axle (the bearing is pressed onto the axle)? Or can I just pull the old seal out with some pliers and push the new one in?

Here is some advice from ChevyTalk.  Hope you can see it, Henry.

Pull the axle and replace the bearing.

When the seal fails - the diff oil will wash out the grease that is in the bearing. Replacing just the seal - although the most economical repair - will leave you with an unsafe condition.

got the axles back in, got all 4 new shocks on, going to hopefully get the motor back in this weekend and get it running and then do the floors.

 Since I had already bought the seals, I just repacked the bearings and put the new seal on.

 

I finished the floors today too. this was my first time actually welding besides laying beads on scrap metal and stuff like that. I threw some silicone on all the seams and threw some paint on it.

hey! so i thought i should post an update. I did eventually get the motor in the car and got it running and driving. but by the time I had all that done it was time to take the snow plow stuff out so the car went into storage for the winter. my plans for when I take it out are to get it safetied and insured, i picked up some front bumper guards, I picked up a new rear license plate panel, I picked up a new coil, I want to get a new distributer cap or paint the one I have, I'm still considering HEI though, maybe some headers too, i'm not sure about that though. I put a cherry bomb on it and I don't really like it, it's just not loud enough! I want to straight pipe it but want to have some back pressure as well. I need to look into getting a new carb too. the 2 barrel carb with the mr gasket adapter was just a quick thing cause I wanted to drive it and not spend money on a carb. i think I need to adjust my kick down linkage too.

its in! it doesn't look too bad either. still had to put the all the cooling stuff on.

got it running and driving. took it around the block a few times with no plates, I couldnt help myself. I was just too excited to try it! haha. I did wash it but I think once I take it out in the spring I'm gonna try wet sanding and buffing. Im going to look into fixing that rear quarter panel damage too and touching up the rockers.

anyways, so now it sits in storage waiting for the spring time, I can't wait to take it out.

 no, I'm actually in the west end of ottawa, near the ikea. those neighbourhoods do look the same though, probably built around the same time.

So I have a burnt out bulb on the passenger side front park lamp, how do I get the light bulb out exactly? does it twist out? Or does it just pull out? I tried both ways but didn't want to smash the bulb with my fingers.

Nope.....Parking lights stayed on with headlights starting in 68, when side marker lights started from factory

Yes parking lights were with headlights starting in 68. On my 57 Cevy I used an 84 Chev headlight switch and have the parking lights on as 68 on.

The bulb has the 2 pins in different locations on the base and only goes in one way.

On stubborn bulbs I may use a piece of heater hose that fits tightly over the bulb. Sometimes rust builds up inside socket and locks bulb in socket, when this happens I use a pair of needlenose pliers to twist the crap out of the bulb to break it loose(WD40 might help).

You can make the parking lights come on with the headlights, by finding a post at the back of your light switch that's hot with parking & headlights. Tail lights work this way.

Taillight would be best. If you tie into the headlight feed when you turn on the parking lights only the headlights will be fed, unless you put a diode in line.
