Turns out the car I bought has no rear brakes at all. Didn't think to take wheels off to check. Figured the seller wouldn't be a dick and tell me.
Either way, I can buy all the rear drum parts for $375 or do I just find a rear end from the wrecking yard and swap it in complete, maybe even with discs?
you should be able to buy all the parts you need for less than that..what parts egsactly ..you need 2 whee-lcyls.$30, hold-down kit, $20, shoes $40,00 drums maybe $50 ea..I am looking less than $200..what else are you missing..possible you may need a part or two for the e-brake assembly ..but what else are you missing..put a list up and will give you great prices ..I have some good connections for a brother rodder.. post the parts and I will what I can get for a price for you..
Don't bother with the drums, convert it to disc. Easy swap...90's Impala, Caprice, Camaro or Firebird caliper brackets bolt on...don't forget to get the proportioning valve also. Can get adj valves for $100 at summit or jegs. Swap works with any 70's up GM 10 or 12 bolt. Lots of stuff interchanges. Astro AWD rotors, Eldorado, truck front calipers if you dont care about e-brakes....

You better care about e-brakes if you need to get it certified.. e-brakes are required by the law in this province
And there is nothing wrong with drum brakes they work just fine ..about 75% of the braking is done with the front brakes..I say save your money ..
and I know 58 Chevy Frank is a good guy but I have used Chineese drums for 15 years, lots of them 20 to 30 sets a year and I have only had two drums that caused me grief with balance becuse they did not balance the drums properly..and if the truth be known just becuase they come in a Delco, mopar, motocraft,Napa, carstar box does not mean they are NOT Chineese ..just sayin..
I need shoes, drum, spring, cylinder, adjusting screw and lever, actuating link, strut and anything else I can't think of for each side.
The bloody thing was bare behind the wheel.
But a little thing that for some reason not enough rodders seem to take advantage of is Rock Auto..you need to Bing Rock Auto..they give car parts away ..check them out and price all the brakes stuff you might be surprized ..how little it cost to get all new stuff and be safe..

You are gonna spend almost as much on that drum set up as converting to impala discs. Like I said, you only need to scavenge the mounting brackets from a wrecker and get the rest at your local parts house. Minor fittings to add flex lines...no biggie.
And yes, they DO come with E brakes unlike the archaic, last century thoughts from some.
Factor shipping and import costs on your internet order...Your best dollar value is to use locals.
You still have to do the same amount of work and there is no waiting. Tons of Ex-cruisers & Taxis to cough up those $20 brackets
No I didn't.
I was referring to only buying the mounting brackets from the boneyard. They could easily be made of 1/4 or 3/8 plate but for the sake of a couple used parts, why bother. The rest is new from your local parts jobber. Who puts used brakes on a car??
I don't have time for fragile egos or people who cannot do basic math... I never said there's anything wrong with your suggestion. I'm just saying that there are cheaper options. any time you need to do the brakes you have to place another order

is it a truck 12 bolt? i have a 78 gmc jimmy rearend in my 55. with the huge rear drums it was a huge improvement over the original 11 x 1 1/2" drums. everything new from napa wasn't that expensive including drums.

Yeah Rock has some good pricing, I just wish their website was a little easier to navigate. It is not set up very well. I do like the choice of shipping methods.

Year make and model then the name of the part your looking for . Confuses me every time. Thanks for pointing that out
you may have a hard time finding some of the rear brake parts, I had to do some digging to find a buddy of mine the rear brake parts for a 70's chev truck he was doing as they were no longer available. a newer diff or disc brake conversion may be your only option

Maybe it's because not all the parts have a picture of them next to the description.

Shouldn't be too tricky for a true "Gearhead"!....but if you really get stuck, ask Santa - he knows everything!

now hat, some people cant peel off the hundreds and buy these items, I was once there, no money for anything but I still built stuff on a tight budget. it is the way to go if you can afford it though, nothing like 4 wheel disc brakes, or 13 by 3 inch shoes like on my jeep, it stops pretty aggressive
