sound a cracked flexplate makes
Permalink

I am at my wits end with my camaro.

I finally got it running after 8 years of sitting. Still a bit more to go.

When i got it back. It ran great. Lots of power. Engine made no sound.

I had to move the car in the spring due to a impending seperation and when i started it. It sounded like something let go in the engine. It ran fine. Did not smoke. Lots of power still. Noise went away almost when it warmed up but i can still hear it.

Oil pressure is great. Fires up no problem. Im hoping for a flexplate issue as im almost done with this bs. Im on the verge of selling it and cut my losses. I have limited time due to work and im burnt out.

I have a short vid i need to upload of it as i know its hard to diagnose without hearing it.

The noise can vary but in some cases it will sound similar to a rod knock.

seems noisy but the crank hitting the dipstick?  ive had that happen before.  should post another vid from over the engine.  a flex plate will make a tinny kind of snapping knock, at least the ones Ive heard before

With a flex plate..in neutral you probably will not hear it, but when you pull it down into drive with a low idle you will hear it..best thing I found with no chassis ears is to head back behind one of the mall stores good acustics..park along side the building passenger window down do an idle test in neutral..then pull it into drive..feather the throttle and see if the noise changes with rpm  and it's more common than you may think..other wise you can use a long piece of heater hose in your ear and just move it around the area your hearing the noise to help pin-point it..

Sounds like the starter drive is hanging up and not disengaging when the engine starts.

What i would really like to do is drop the damn car off and pay someone to finish it. Between my hectic work scedule and current seperation. I cant find the time to do it.

I had not listened to the video on my last reply..That is not a cracked flex plate.. I think it.s more to do with starter shiming..I agree with bruce The starter is either not shimed correctly or the teeth on the fly wheel do not match the starter teeth..there are different starter gears and number of teeth on flywheels. I could not tell if the problem was on engagement or binding when the engine started before it released..But I believe it is a starter-flywheel issue// that noise is talking to you..

Its a bosch hi tourque mini starter. I have had it for years. Never had this issue. I see your point on the sound if its not dis engaging or the flywheel "not flexplate lol" teeth are chewed. I would think its not dis engaging.

Indeed it does sound like a Chevy!...that the starter won't fully retract.

I guess Chev starters are designed to never retract because they never start.

the cracked flex plate that I once had was cracked just out from the crank. It sounded just like a bird chirping

I would be checking out the torque converter. Sounds like the spragge is binding or the stator has separated.
