tri 5 steering column swap

I want to swap my 57 Pontiac/chevy stock non collapsing steering column to one that does collapse/tilt. I have a 81 f-bird parts car that has a donor column I might try.

Any suggestions other than buying new?

Dennis

I have used the gm columns of that type for many customs ive built, best part is they plug right into any older gm harness.  pretty easy to adapt as well

I have an 84 Monte Carlo tilt in my 57 Chevy wagon. I cut the firewall mounting flange off the bottom of the column and the tube dia is the same as the 57. I even used the stock 57 firewall clamping system. I cut the U bracket/ clamp off the 84 in half and welded two slotted tabs onto it to bolt to the stock 57 under dash framing. See my picturetrail site for what I did to the shifting/ key collar which I removed.

checked the site and see that you also have the sway bar. I got the sway bar from the 81 f-bird and its exactly the same as yours......I just have to mount it the same....another one of those unfinished projects!

What exactly did you make the replacement shift collar from?

Dennis, I used the stock collar and cut off the shifter knob and the key knob. Glued in screening from the back and then filled the holes.84 coloumn modifed3.jpg84 coloumn modifed2.jpg

simple enough...what was the sway bar from that you have on the 57?
Did it make any difference when installed compared to without?
