Pulled this thing apart to fix a front cover leak. Good thing. A little surprise when the pan came down.

Anyone notice what is missing?

You guy's are sharp. Seems the pick-up was being used to polish the bottom of the pan. Good old smallblock Chevy's.

Pick up tube missing, had it happen on customers car with 4.3L chev.
Put it back in place , couple of tack welds, drive on.

My engine building buddy swears by brazing the pick up in place. I had one come off years ago in my truck but being a gm I was able to make it home with no oil pressure.

Once you properly afix the pick-up to the pump , also ( on press-in tubes ) seal the joint with some oil-proof sealant to prevent the pump from pulling air . If the tube has ever been used , then it is prone to being out-of-round , therefore prone to leaking . DON / fleet 51

I have to agree with Dave, I have never assembled an engine without a bolt on oil pick up....
