"Big Daddy" Don Garlits revolutionized drag racing with his rear-engine design dragster. He will be a special guest at the May 17 Detroit Dragway Reunion being held at the Milan Dragway.
MILAN -- Sit down, strap yourself in and hang on for the ride as the Milan Dragway hosts the Fifth Annual Detroit Dragway Reunion on Saturday May 17.
Gates open at 9 a.m. with time trials beginning at 10 a.m. The Milan Dragway is located at 10860 Plank Road.
The Detroit Dragway was located at the corner of Sibley and Dix Roads in Brownstown Township from 1959 until the quarter-mile track closed in 1998.
This year's reunion is bigger than ever as the father of drag racing "Big Daddy" Don Garlits is the event's special guest. Garlits will be bringing his 426 Hemi powered Swamp Rat 8 to Milan and will "Cackle" the motor as drag racing fans experience the sights and sounds of a nostalgia front engine dragster up close and personal.
Garlits , a 17-time Top Fuel World Champion has won a total of 144 national events while winning the sport's biggest prize, the NHRA U.S. Nationals eight times. A true American Icon, one of Garlits' dragsters, Swamp Rat XXX is enshrined on exhibit in the National Museum of American History at the Smithsonian museum in Washington, D.C.
"Big Daddy" revolutionized the sport of drag racing by perfecting the design of the rear engine dragster. In 1970, Garlits was driving Swamp Rat XIII, a front engine slingshot rail when the two speed transmission he was developing exploded, cutting the dragster in half and severing part of his right foot.
While recovering from his injuries, Garlits started drawing plans for his new design. He located the volatile nitro methane powered motor and power train behind the ****pit, keeping the driver out of harm's way in the event of an engine explosion or fire. Eleven months later the newly designed rear engine dragster was finished, successfully tested and the rest is history.
At 82 years old, Garlits is still going strong and will be one of two special guests for this event.
Another drag racing icon and Detroit Dragway regular, Roger "Color Me Gone" Lindamood is this year's Grand Marshal.
Lindamood successfully campaigned his long line of Dodge Super Stockers and nitro Funny Cars across the country beating up the competition and entertaining fans for two decades during the 1960s and 1970s. Winner of the 1964 Indy U.S. Nationals, Lindamood was always a threat to the competition and a fan favorite.
Also on hand at Milan for this year's Detroit Dragway Reunion will be nostalgia funny cars, gassers and wheel standing, bumper dragging side by side racing. There's also a Billetproof car show featuring hundreds of nostalgia race cars, hot rods and customs.
Admission prices will be $15.00 with a $5 crossover fee to the Billetproof Car Show. Kids 12 and younger are free.
Thanks Will for the interesting posting. That should be a great show, Detroit Dragway,,, still remember hearing their ads on Fri- Saturday nights on windsor and other stations.
