My 49 dodge's driver's side vent window frame is in rough shape, Looks like I can get a set of NOS vent window frames for a halfways affordable price.
The thing is, how do you get the glass out? I'm thinking trim as much of the rubber or tape or whatever out and then soak it in solvent for a few days?
Any tips appreciated.
And of course when it's out, what should I be using to put it back in? Or should I drop them off at a glass place for that part?
I use a razor to cut as much as possible in and around the glass frame. Then a good heat gun to soften the tar paper they use to shove the glass in..with the windshield silicone Urathane we have now that comes in a caulking tube, I use that to install the glass in the frame it cleans up well with gas..or mineral spirits..and works perfect. I have done a few.it's easy and the vent window will close better..the stuff we used to use, I think is still available from the glass guys, they also use it in the glass channels that hold the side windows to the channel the glass mechanism operates from..I also think it's available form Facca fasteners on Exeter rd in London..They have tons of wind lace, and window trim stuff including whiskers..I prefer the winshield Urathane ..
If the old one was held in with an adhesive stick it in the oven at 300 for abit and it will release. Most times if they sell the frame they also sell it complete or with the glass . just a thought. some clean welding gloves or something equal or you will need new glass anyway.

Sweet. Thanks! So they used some kind of tar paper goo? That explains it.
I think i'll check out facca as well. I'm going to need those whiskers and a bunch of other stuff. Looks like they have an assortment of weatherstripping as well.
I got the black tape type stuff from Speedy On Wonderland north in London.
The price on the whiskers type stuff will shock you. They do have several different types though.

Pour a little lacquer thinner on the gasket and let it soak in. Trim as much as you can with a razor blade. I use a 90 degree pick and work out as much of the old gasket tape from each side. Keep dabbing lacquer thinner on it and it will eventually work out.
To re install get some gasket tape of the correct thickness from an auto glass shop. Wrap it around the vent glass and tape it in place with masking tape on the edges of the gasket. A little soapy water and some elbow grease will get it back into the frame. Trim the excess gasket tape with the blade. Not a difficult job but takes a little time and patience.
