anyone else get a recall from the RCMP?

Seems they used counterfeit CSA stickers on units sold between Jan 2010 and Mar 2012. The RCMP want owners to dispose their units and Everlast is prepared to provide 10-50% of the purchase price, pro-rated, to be used as a credit against a replacement welder.

IF I had one I think a full 100% REFUND plus tax would be more in order

10 - 50 % ?? I don't think I'd be buying anything from them after reading about what they did

WTF kind of offer is that . You are Joking I would hope. Nothing short of a 100% refund + would be acceptable . Shure it was the Rcmp that contacted you and not these clown's hoping you scrap the evidence. I smell a class action suit in the near future.

10 - 50% might look good if the idiots get shut down or go bankrupt........i don't think either scenario is unreasonable to assume. where are the criminal charges ?

Were they really just counterfit CSA stickers used by Everlast? Or were they counterfit units not even sold by Everlast? If the story turns out to be the latter, I think Everlast went above and beyond by offering up to 50% refund of money that never got back to them in the first place.

But if it WAS the real Everlast company just using bogus CSA stickers to skirt any legit testing etc... then yeah, I agree - 100% refund!

Did a search and found people questioning this back in 2009 then the units were shipped without a plug . This is a franchise so I would think they are all lying through their teeth blaming the chinese manufacturer. Funny how no mention of this comes up in a search , something stinks.

Found this on an Everlast forum, US owners not effected.

"The posted recall affects Canadian customers only. CSA is a privately owned Canadian company. This recall is a result of a trademark violation with CSA. The factory confused CE with CSA labeling. When this error was discovered, it decided that the affected Canadian customers should be notified and offered a discount for future product. "

wonder why everlast was not ordered by the courts to pay for all those machines to be returned and CSA approved and sent back to the customers ?
What the courts have done is reward everlast by the RCMP requiring the customer to destroy their welder and then have the option of buying from the same crook at 10-50% prorated.

If I owned the thing I would call

  • the rcmp that sent the letter
  • everlast

I think you will find that they are recommending you destroy it because if anything ever happens your insurance will Void your policy....... Nice.....

This is interesting. A few years ago I had my concession trailer inspected by the ESA and some of my machines have no CSA stickers because I bought the trailer and some of the contents in the US. I was informed that a plug-in device is not required to have CSA approval, only hard-wired devices. Furthermore, the lack of CSA approval on a device does not void or impact any insurance you have.

Read somewhere that some of the these machines came without a plug. Could of just been the larger industrial models . With insurance companies it does not matter to them if what they do is legal . Like oil tanks or declaring if you have ever been tested for a disease you have never had to denight a claim.  They already know they are going to sink you long before anything is resolved in the courts .

The company I worked for bought hundreds of large pedestal fans a number of years ago from the states. Someone noticed they had no CSA sticker and raised a stink so the company had a CSA rep come in to look. He glanced at one fan, charged the company a big fee and handed over a bunch of stickers. Just another tax grab as far as I'm concerned. You don't see thousands of Americans being fried every year because they don't have our CSA stickers in place.

Yes, but they likely have UL stickers attached - which are the recognized standard in the US.

Anyhow, how many guys are actually disposing of their welders ?!?!?!?

CSA is not a private company. It is an arm of the federal gov't. Civil Servants. ULC is a private deal.
How do I know that? Two of brothers worked for CSA for several years. The younger one is now one of the top men at ULC. The other returned to work for a private testing lab I used to own the original corporation for with my Dad.
Personally I don't give two hoots about a sticker. Does it work? That is all I want to know. Plug it in, wet your finger and touch it. Are you still breathing? Good. It passed the test. Carry on. I am fed up with people making decisions on what we can or cant buy. Whether they are my brothers or not. It is highly unlikely few in the federal government has the expertise to approve or disapprove anything because they don't have the skill set to know. Most of these folks if they had a flat on the highway would be there for a year or so as they would have no idea how to change a tire let alone approve a welder. Forget it. Just a bunch of paper pushers and career BSPs (blood sucking parasites) feathering their nests at our expense. Now in truth the older of my two brothers would have some technical skills. However if it is Ok in the US ok in the rest of the world then it isn't unsafe here. Do I sound a bit jaded? I am . I am fed up living to rules made by folks who don't understand what they are doing. Like parliament making rules about automobiles. Stupid.
