I am looking at a Chev V 8 block but there are no serial numbers on the pad at front of block. The only numbers I can see are on left rear of block( casting Numbers).
The numbers are 14010207. Any body have any ideas? I,m hoping its an older 350 / pre emission bull.
Thanks guys. I was hoping for an older block to foil the enviro boys . I,ll have to think about that one. I have an 85 block in my car now so its probably the same as I have.
any smallblocks with that amount of numbers will be a newer one, what you are after is a 010 type block or one with 7 digits. theres tons of small block id material on the net, handy to have when some guys trying to tell you his 267 is a 350 with an rv cam.

I was trying to ID my block as well. I can see the casting number (3970010) on the back but can read the numbers at the front. From the numbers at the back it tells me 69-79 302/327/350 2 or 4 bolt main. I read it was a pretty common casting number.
Do I need the numbers on the front to be able to get any more info on what this motor is out of?
my book shows it as 68 - 79 - 302, 327, 350 casting number used after the change to large journal. nothing model specific. 2 and 4 bolt main. it is the same casting number as the 2 bolt l48 in my 76 vette.

stax is the 010 only stamped on the back of the block or is it another place also. i watch for it when i come across something with no tranny on it but there are many with the trans on them so i don't look so much.
i had 3 010 blocks last year and the only way to tell really what year was by the ENGINE ASSEMBLY DATE/SUFFIX CODE and partial VIN code stamped on the passanger front tab. i tossed the one with the 1979 year code. even was a 4 bolt main but nobody wanted it.

I believe the stamped numbers on the tab at the front of the block( right front ) from the drivers seat give you plant of manufacture plus date year and a partial serial number indicating make of car it was put in and serial number of car.
The 010 blocks have the engine code stamped on the front pad of the engine unless it's a warranty or over the counter engine. Engine codes were 2 letters up till 69, in 70 they went to 3 letters . Car engines were CXX while truck engines were TXX after 1969 (70 and newer).
