hey guy,s been trying to find a supply ove strip lamp,s for the shop. were is the best place local to london area for new or second hand unit,s also need 220 volt plug/sockets, dense green insulation & loads ove fireboard. cheers jonny
The most economical fluorescent lamps to buy are the 4 foot T-8's bulbs are cheap and so are the fixtures. As far as 230v plugs and outlets, the current rating will determine which style you'll need. If you're not in a rush, order that stuff online for the best price.
I think he is talking about 220 wall plugs. comparative to our 110 . 220 is the standard for everything in Scotland . Hemis right go with the 4 ft T8s full spectrum or daylight bulbs
4 foot t8s are becoming the norm and most cost effective. The big long term costs are the bulbs and you definitely want to stay away from the 8 foot. Full spectrum is the best in a work area. I changed over my offices and service areas years ago and would never go back. I installed 16 4' units ganged in 16' sections in my shop with deflector shields and especially for these older eyes, it's perfect. The t8s are also very efficient so cost recovery comes quickly.
Jonny,
there's a rehab store on Pacific Crt in london and St Pierre's salvage on Exeter rd. Both have 4foot fixtures cheap. If you can't find them talk to me on Sat. at the ELTA or PM me.
I was luckey recently as there was a $1000 grant programme that upgraded commercial electrical lighting. I got almost all my old lighting fixtures upgraded to the new style bulbs. I only had to pay the difference over the $1000 to finish it off. Only nice thing I ever got fom the town ,hydro and the province. Oh ya and thanks to you guys ,you know the taxpayers. Ed

The one in Hamilton and Burlington You may as well just buy it at home depot or lowes. The prices are the same . They have a reuse( not part of habitat) on the north service road in Burlington that I have picked up some killer deals. If its Higher than 14 ft go with t5s or drop the t8s lower pay attention to the bulbs and go with the highest k rating 6500 the place will glow at night check on line because the big two box stores have deals you don't see in stores.
I converted my shop over a couple years ago from the older T-12 40 watt bulbs to the newer T-8 34 watt bulbs. I have 40 bulbs, so the energy savings alone was worth it. I used "daylight" bulbs and it really improved the feel of the shop because I can actually see what I'm doing.
Not to highjack the thread here but I'm looking at buying some T5 fixtures that are 347V. I have 600V power supply but I'm not sure how that works or how they are wired. Anyone know? I just want to know if these lights are for use with my power before buying. I would get an electrician to wire them up.

They are wired by using the neutral wire and any one of the the other 3 wires, giving you 347V.
If you are not using 347 already its best to steer clear of it or set it on a separate panel that you have to kill the works to service. Most are single phase to neutral on a breaker shutting off the breaker still leaves the other two phases live, interrupt the neutral and one of the other two legs could kill you

If you are planning to run those 347v. fixtures off a light switch rather than a breaker, make sure you use a 347v. switch in a 347v. electrical box, they are different from a 110/220v. application.
The 347v. ballasts draw next to nothing amperage wise, you could probably wire 3 shops on one 15a. breaker.
347v. power is probably the most dangerous voltage you can get involved with, it tends to hang on to you rather than throw you across the room like 600v. will.

about 5-6yrs ago there was a program and i got all the lights in the offices done free. about 20 of them. now i am snooping for l-e-d for the walk in freezer as the cold doesn't effect them and they will run at a fraction of the cost. there is a small grant available. the old lights in it run 24/7 do to replacing the ballasts so often, -28f. i think the grant deals are more of a supplier thingy, ie; ont hydro-veridian-etc.
I just converted all my old 4 tube 4 foot fixtures to T 5s. One tiny lightweight electronic ballast replaces two heavy old PCB filled ballasts and the T5 Daylight bulbs are super bright. I goofed and bought one box of warm white tubes somehow and they're kinda pink and ugly but they're still brighter than my old fixtures. Easy swap - the fixtures require no changes except for a bit of wiring.

I your place is not already wired for 347v lighting you are in for some expense.
such as?
I believe the building that Mancaver is talking about is the old Don Coffey Ford dealership in Schomberg at 9&27, I would almost bet that it already has a 3 Phase 600 volt service in it. Chances are that those high bay lights are already 347v. Probably been 35 years since I was in that building.
I took all of the fluorescent fixtures out of my shop and replaced them with 27 watt Daylight CFLs. Just screw them in..... no ballasts, no tubes, no broken sockets to worry about. I only have 9 1/2 foot ceilings, but the CFLs are as bright as the fluorescents that they replaced.
I wouldn't mind changing over to LEDs, it will be interesting to find out how Fatstax likes them.
By the way, you can buy a clear [or coloured if you wish] tube that slips over a fluorescent tube to help contain the glass if the fluorescent tube shatters.

I brought in the 600 volt service about 6 years ago. I also put the high bay lights in about a year ago but they are not 347V.
Sorry I hijacked this thread. I think I've been talked out of 347V and might look at changing the ballasts to 120V.

they are good but tend to focus their light in a circular area, but are pretty bright and as well, no ballasts or high voltage, plus thye last a long time and draw very little current. i should have sprung for even higher wattage ones i think.
Never had any of the CFL's last any longer than a regular light bulb if i put them in a spot that they get turned on and off several times a day . Only have two that have lasted , one is in the furnace room that I have never shut off ( No logical reason but its been on for 10 years) and the other is one of the huge original suckers the size of a flood light thats in the driveway lamp , gets turned on maybe 1 or 2 times a month

caver- let me know if you hook up with this guy. i will check with my electrician about it and maybe we can buy a bigger wack at a better price.
Shag, I have already cut a deal with him. How many would you want? I can re-visit the deal with him. He is now out of town for a week.
Don't know if they are shatter proof but they are from a company that stores food products.

i am going to ask whether they will operate in the freezer first. i just asked my cooler mgr and we are t5 in the cooler now. mine has to be an approved shatter proof fixture. the cover tubes won't work. i am 600v now with a couple of step downs for the office and the tenants units.
