The last time I saw Johnny Winter was at CNE stadium in 1987. I was going to see him July 23 at the Regent Theatre in Picton but unfortunately...............
Johnny Winter was scheduled to play the Picton Regent Theatre on July 23rd. He passed away suddenly after a show in Switzerland on July 16th. He was 70 years old. In place of his performance that night, we have assembled an ALL STAR CANADIAN tribute show approved by Johnny Winters' management.
The love and respect for Johnny Winter is unsurpassed. The musicians that are coming forward to pay tribute for Johnny is truly astounding and humbling, some of the best in Canada and even one of Johnny Winters' original band members from the late 70's, slide guitarist extraordinaire Pat Rush. Pat will also be bringing one of Johnny's original Firebird guitars.
In the line up is a list of Juno Award Winning artists, International Blues Award Winning artists, Maple Blues Award Winning Artists, in short, some of the best in Canada including Jimmy Bowskill and The Barnburners, Paul Deslauriers, Rick Fines, David Gogo, Steve Strongman, The 24th Street Wailers and Pat Rush.
I will be attending this instead. Not the same, but an amazing tribute.
Johnny Winter was set to play his next concert is Picton, however his passing yesterday in Switzerland has made the night a celebration of the blues legend.
On Wednesday at the Regent Theatre, a number of noteworthy artists will preform in memory of the guitarist who was ranked as one of the 100 greatest of all time.
Jimmy Bowskill, Paul Deslauriers, Rick Fines, Steve Strongman and Pat Rush are some of the names that will be in attendance.

Was this the same guy that I listened to as a teenager in the 70's? I'm sure the fellow i'm thinking of wasn't a blues player or am I wrong? I was into alice cooper, acdc, def leopard etc.

There is only one Johnny Winters as far as I'm concerned, so it is quite likely the same one you were listening to.
He did get a fair amount of play time on mainstream radio because many of his blues tunes are "rocked up" quite a bit- high energy!
Another possibility was that you heard his brother Edgar, who also had a few 'Hits' on the radio.

Johnny was huge around here in the 70s. played the rock circuit. I would guess I had seen him 3 or 4 times at the gardens. One of the most memorable and the concert that hooked me on the blues was Johnny , Muddy waters and james cotton Played a old theater in buffalo. He was master with the guitar. Seeing him play a small venue when he still had his health was something else.
i first saw johnny winter at varsity arena in june of 69 at pop 69 festival. it was good of johnny to sign my album cover 4 years ago. he was quite frail but man he still had it.
He will certaily be missed. I never thought of Johnny being 70 ! He lived life to its fullest, however; I believe he was a young 70... One of the great guitar slingers with his axe, Gibson Firebird he played the vast majority of the time, purchased in the 70's...
