I have just added a few pictures to flickr of our trip to Speedway museum and of Neil with Danny Thompson, the son of Micky. Still waiting for all the other picture to show up. We appreciate all your comments. Anybody interested in going next year. Start planning now.
Well, Warren and myself made it back home, after a 5,000 mile ride. As we approached the salt flats last Thursday, it was very evident I would not be racing this year, as there was a 3" to 4" wake on the 12" (plus) of water laying on the surface of the salt.
We only had one mishap, with a "lauch of the truck and trailer" in a construction area east of Gary Indianna.... I managed to gather the out of control truck and trailer, however; I cracked one of the water boxes in the Belly Tank, due to the violent lauch of the truck and trailer. You would have thought a BMX racer designed the temporary roadway.....
Thanks to all who called or sent emails :) I was hoping this would have been the year to make a 180 MPH (plus) pass on the salt, on a 200 MPH record for the XO/GL class.... Oh well, no broken parts..... I didn't even take the car out fo the trailer in Wendover and change to the race tires....
As Jimi Hendrix once stated: "Blues is easy to play, but hard to feel". Well I am a fustrated blues guitar player as well, however; if playing the guitar or racing on the salt flats was easy, everyone would be doing it !
Warren, thanks for the memories and friendship, it was a pleasure. Next year will be different "wuga", bucket list part two, EH buddy :)
BTW, I should mention it was wonderful speaking to Danny Thompson, Mickey Thompson's son, who had Challanger II at the motel on display, hoping to make a 400 MPH pass with a single motor and naturally aspirated ! Stunning, considering other 400 MPH teams were using turbo's etc..... Not bad for 1967 technology.
