Wet sanding and buffing.

As some of you know, or might remember, I replaced the box on my '03 Dakota with a clean rust free AZ box.

The Arizona box was black, which matched my cab, the problem was, it was baked, to a shade of grey, and the clear coat pretty much gone, felt like 120 grit paper.

I decided to get it painted, as I didn't want to tackle the project myself, thinking, it's black and a truck box ; not very forgiving for a rookie.

I got it sprayed for a really good deal, but I indeed got what I paid for...a very heavy orange peel, it kinda looked like it was painted with a roller and heat gun.

Although I wasn't looking for a show quality paint, the reason I bought the box and got it painted, was to make the truck look cleaner for when I put it up for sale.

At this point I'm thinking, I'll sand it down and get it re-sprayed, or hell, I might as well try it myself, instead of throwing $ away.

So I proceed to wet sand it, at least give it a shot, worst case scenario, I'll need to re-spray the clear coat.

Since the peel was heavy, I hit it with 1,000 grit and soapy water, then 1,500 and finally a 2,000.

Well the base coat was thick enough, I didn't break through. So I tried buffing polishing with Meguiar's compound, and the some Mothers, both with good results.

But, since I was at it, even though I wasn't looking for show quality, I had enough rubbing time invested at this point, that I'd rather have it better. (my anal'ism).

So I went to our local NAPA store, and asked Brian what he had, that would work for me.

Well he has just the stuff for me he says, and points out this "FARECLA G3" product, I've never noticed it before, or heard of it, but figured, what the hell, I'm just experimenting here anyways. That box needed to be re-sprayed, regardless.

A bit expensive of a product, but dayum does that ****z work good.

I'm simply amazed on how it blew 3M, Meguiars and Mothers out of the water.

Although I still need to get my box, clear coat sprayed, since the peel was so heavy. I could just seal that finish with a few coats of wax, for the time being.

It looks just amazingly better.

Same product we use at the body shop. We were going with the G3 and again with G10 and finally with a Meguiar's swirl remover. (Meguiar's stuff is in a tan colored bottle, but the product itself is purple.) That will blow your socks off for a final finish. We did a bit of experimenting and now don't bother with the G10, we found it made no difference. No one could tell which surface was done with what so we just eliminated a big time consuming step by not using the G10 anymore. (Think big $ as in labor intensive) The G3 will look great, but the Meguiar's will put it over the top, makes black look a foot deep and any other dark colors snap.

I was just after a factory finish, and that Farecla, way surpassed it. Now the cab looks bad, lol.
I've been a longtime user of Meguiar's products, but it just seems to be harder to find, in the tan bottles.
The black bottles they sell at CTC etc...is just not the same.
The Meguiar's stuff I have is two/three years old now, and not working as well.

Now I'm going to have to go over it with the "Swirl Remover", and then have to hit the cab.
Another long weekend gone...

As long as the clear is thick enough, you can sand it out.  I would stay away from 1000 completely, to easy to sand through clear.  1500, 2000,2500 then Meguires 105 on an orange pad, Meguires 205 on white, 205 on black and your done.

Keeper, the peel was worst then that, I'm positive there's no clear coat left on 80% of the paint. It will need to get re-sprayed, but I will do it myself this time. If it comes out bad, I can re-spray a couple more coats.
It's a daily driver, I'm not after a show finish.
But I was planning on selling the truck in the fall, and the paint in that condition, greatly depreciates the re-sale value.

Thanks, for the pointers, I'll try those on my project, once I get to that stage.

Slim, thanks for the heads-up.wink
