I have been looking for one of these. They came in T series Dodge trucks like fire trucks and oil tankers 54 to 56. Typically this engine was equipped with dual carbs. All had dual manifolds. Stroke is in excess of 5 inches and engine is 30 inch long at the head and 42 inches long total. If you have one you are tripping over let me know. What would I do with it?
I was never a rat rod guy (although I do appreciate that style) but If I had one of these and an old Dodge truck cab I think it would happen pretty quick. Probably makes about 1000ft lbs of torque at 2200 RPM. Why other then reverse you wouldn't even need trans. Just a two speed rear axle with a DP , Up for in town, down for hiway. No mufflers, just two very big pipes up the back with rain caps. Sort of like Lightspeed Mike's build but on steroids. (Always liked the look of Mike's deal)
Then I would do my Croc Dundee imitation to the Ford flathead guys. "You call that a flat head? That's not a flathead. THIS is a FLATHEAD."
Tis wonderful to know even in mid 60s you can still get crazy ideas!

Hi DON : I remember those trucks -- BOB HAYWARD ( of Miss Supertest fame ) drove one in and around Woodstock Ont . I wish I could help you -- But for now , keep those " OLD & CRAZY IDEAS " alive -- Not everything new is better !!! -- LATER -- DON / fleet 51
wowser, "Probably makes about 1000ft lbs of torque at 2200 RPM." all the hp don't mean much without a bunch of that. just have to get it to the pavement efficiently. makes my 737 lbs seem paltry. if i happen to bang into one you will be informed.
Amazing. Awesome! I had no idea this existed. (Which isn't saying much... I don't no nuffin).
My Canadian 49 dodge has the 25 inch flattie and will ill get a slight warmed over treatment. That car is stock, so any improvements that aren't for safety will be just like someone would have done in the 50s. I can get the dual manifolds, but I'm thinking of just getting mine split. I'll Mill down the head to up compression a little, and I have the dual carb setup. If ever I can find the overdrive transmission for the car, it'll be done. :)
I can't tell by the pics though is it an 8? Or a 6?
This thing would be epic in my '49 special deluxe with a turbo on it...
Anyway, that old flathead dodge of mine made me a believer, what a cool nicely designed old engine.
it was a six cylinder only available in T series and larger trucks. Ie Fire trucks and Oil trucks were the most likely canidates. 5 ton I believe. There was also a 370 cubic inch version but apparently it was not available with twin carbs. In my youth I knew where there was on (Doxee Road PR Ed Cty) but I didn't know it was a 413. What throws a lot of us is in the 60s there was a 413 V8. This engine I am talking about (the413cu inch flathead six)was used in big trucks (1953 to 1956). In late 56 they switched to using the early Hemis. Old fire trucks , old Mines with Dump trucks , old military trucks and old oil trucks would be prime places to look. They had a reputation for being thirsty and apparently sometimes twisted off a cam gear. Even a busted engine would be fine as if we must we can make parts. don

Don.the big ole Dodge would be great Hotrod material….413 cubes… do you know if it was a forged crank?.was it a 5 or 3 cap main bearing unit?
It would be super awesome and pretty easy to make a trick induction system…. if the cam was good.. just re grind a better one to suit the build….. it surely would kick Henrys Butt.
I will look around…..
Yes it was 7 main bearing I believe,(being a hi stress 6 cyl) I have several friends in the cam grinding business as I design my own for some projects where not a lot of work or research has been done and they are all good to make what I need without question. A couple are getting pretty long of tooth so I might have a bit of a hurry but then so am I so I better be careful what I say. I believe the crank was forged. Near as I can tell main failure in them was the cam gear would come loose. BB mopars with the single bolt cam core also have that tendency and for awhile 3 bolt cores were out of stock so I developed a sure cure to that problem in house. Chances are it would work well on the old six too. My older brother Ron was for a few years pres of the Ottawa area Antique and Classic Boat Club (The Muskoka boat nuts). Chrysler Crowns which are basically a Chrysler industrial engine for light trucks were common and I did a few for him along the way. Back then I had a friend at Crane who had some of the old masters from back in the day. I used to send him my core and he would put a nice grind on them that suited the launches perfectly. He has long since gone to the big machine shop in the sky so I developed other relationships. The Crowns where not that big but were twin carbed and responded well to a careful performance "lift". I would treat the 413 similar if I ever find one. Ideally I thought if I could have found a COE 40s style Dodge cab, remove the front grill and install instead a normal grill fenders and hood from a forties Dodge or Fargo. Whip up a chassis and tuck the rear end in the normal spot the front axle would be on a COE and put the front axle in the normal spot for the normal truck under the normal front fenders then I would have a short truck, be sitting basically over the diff and the rest would be normal. Twin 4 inch stacks and a moon tank on the back of the cab for fuel. Maybe It is just a silly idea but stuff like this keeps me going. don
