This is the NASA online TV channel and they are currently broadcasting the landing of the Rosetta Stone lander on the surface of the comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko, a chunk of ice and dust hurtling to an orbit slinging it around the sun. Touch down is scheduled for 11:00 AM this morning.
It's amazing, like science fiction, but real. I love the mechanism for keeping the lander on the asteroid. 1- booster rocket to hold it down 2- harpoons 3- feet that screw in.
When it landed it only had a couple "small bounces", one was 1.2 km in height lol.
Apparently the comets gravity is so small that the lander only has a "force" of a few grams on the lander. Harpoons didnt fire.
The comet is so far away that a message sent from Earth (travelling at the speed of light or 300,000 km/second) takes 37 minutes one way, to reach the comet.
Apparently the Philae lander might be getting some more Sun and wake up in teh Spring.
Thats quite the dish that they are using to communicate with the Rosetta orbiter which talks with the Philae lander. I wonder if it can pick up HBO?
The 4th pic I posted is the 1st picture of Philae on the surface of Comet 67P.
