So I put my engine on kijiji and got an immediate response. The guy offered to pay the asking price by money order, didnt ask any questions about the engine, but wanted to send extra money so I could pay the shipping. I politely declined the deal because he would not take care of the shipping side of it. He wanted me to wire money to his shipping Co. I just felt uneasy about the whole thing so I baled. Anybody experience this kind of thing or did I just throw the deal?
Scam
Unless someone shows up with cash in person. Pays for it upfront and then says hey. Can we work together on shipping, then I may help. Id just delete the email.IMO.
that scam has been alive for years..and not only in auto related stuff.. Do not accept any deal where they want to send you a fake money order or even a certified check for stuff and then want you pay for anything you will find out after you deposit it and spend the money that your bank will be calling you to tell it was a fake chek, bank certified or not...pretty clever scammers out there..sell local and get da-cash..
I put an ad on kijiji and before I knew it I got a hit not even a minute past, it was so quick I thought it was kijiji telling me I successfully placed my ad. It was a women wanting to buy my stuff for her brother, out of town, pay pal, someone will pick it up on her behalf, same old lines. I hate selling and I hate buying, people need to learn what mint really means, I don't think I own anything that is truly mint. HRD

Yup those are the ones, they even have special e-mails to enable them to be invincible, I told one that I would gladly tell him where to meet me so that he could show me in person how extra special he was.
He likely laughed knowing he got me riled up. I fell into his amusement trap.

Tell them to meet you at work and give the address of the local cop shop.
Also give them the administrative office phone number as a contact #, they will probably hang up once they realise where they called and maybe some cop will trace the phone number and say it is a "known to police" number. stir that pot and let the scammer lick the spoon

a buddy some years ago advertized a proven race motor in these parts for sale. lets say 9000.00. someone from t-o calls and they settle on 8000.00? and he will down on the weekend to p/u. buddy says bring cash or certified chq. guy shows up and pays certified chq. for whatever reason my buddy writes down the lic plate number on the truck. when he goes to the bank monday the chq was phony so he goes to the cop shop with the plate # and is told it is a stolen plate. he was beat. cash-paypal-chq when it clears. maybe someone of this site and a couple of others that is known by some of the other guys is all.
I removed my stuff from kijiji. If I advertise again it will be cash only. With my luck they will bring fake money.I cant believe there are so many scammers. I guess the legal system is too lenient so they just keep doing it.I thought that in the old car community there would be some honesty and trust but I guess bad apples can be found anywhere.
I remember the days of the auto trader, the tri ad. Id read it 2x, miss stuff each time. But a person would circle an add. Call someone, make an appointment and drive over in person (usually with cash in hand) and offer to purchase an item in person. The term low balling didn't really apply. Id pay a price negotiated between the seller and me. Worked pretty slick. Any ad, I have had to place. I do not post my number and ask the reply to leave there number, anything else I delete. I prefer human contact by phone and in person. I do not discuss price over the internet. I have always had great success this way. Noting local cash pick up only and cash in person helps. 9 out of 10 replies are cowards behind the computer. Shrug it off, laugh about it and forgotten. Only takes 1 person to reply, make a call etc. Last big ticket item I sold was to a cop. I wasn't too worried about the sale. Just take things with a grain of salt. Ignore the keyboard cowards, as I have sold 100% of everything I ever advertised. Didn't matter if it took me 2 hours or 2 years, I always got an item sold where the seller and buyer were both happy.
I have had pretty good luck on Kijiji....Sold a few cars, trailers, tractors etc...I dont put my phone number in the ad. They email me and give me their number. I feel more in control that way. If they make offers in the email, it is usually just bullsh!t or a scam, so it gets ignored.
Thanks for all the storys and advice. I guess I will have to learn how to weed out the scammers and tire kickers. I went with my gut-it just didn't feel right so that was my first lesson-I guess I did OK.
I sell and sometimes trade quite a few used hot tubs every year on Kijiji and have had my share of yankoffs. I had a guy wanting to trade a Honda CR250 and a 97 xp720 jet ski on a single trailer for a spa I had listed for $3000 I think. He had both on a trailer behind a beat up old van. I had a look at both checked oil and general condition and both started and ran first crank. He had the ownership for the trailer and jetski but said they were both in a buddies name as he never changed them over and nothing for the bike. He had a very quick look at the spa (to quick) and said lets make the trade. I paid $0 for the spa and only had several hours labour about $100 in parts so I said lets do it. He unloaded them from the trailer and as he was finishing unloading I told him I was going to go back to the shop and grab a pen and paper to take down his information and told him I would also need to see his licence. He went pale for a second and then red and angry. "Why do you need that, I'm not showing you my licence" so I replied "well then no deal" and said "Why are they stolen?" Well he started cursing to himself and getting all twitchy and nervous. I told him the deal was off and to load his stolen **** back up and get gone a sap. I went back into the garage told my buddy (was in the garage) to grab my Billybat to have handy just in case and when I came back out not 20 seconds later he was gone. Left the bike and the jetski sitting there. Long story short...The bike runs great, the jetski is a blast and I sold the spa the next day.
Always have someone with you if possible Items over $500 ask for I.D Beware of stolen property Always deal cash in hand and face to face. Never accept anything but CASH...ever! Before replying to an email I google the senders email and phone number if given. You would be amazed what you can find out about a person before you even contact them with a little detective work...and yes I know who you all are...lol Use your instinct and the old saying usually holds ture...If it is to good to be true...

Yes, as others have mentioned, if it entails a Kijiji item and a buyer requesting shipping, you can pretty much guarantee it's a scam.
Instead of sending you the money order, you could suggest that he set up and pay for the shipping himself, and have the shipper show up with CASH when he comes to pick up your item because your item will not be leaving your property until you have the full amount, in CASH, in your hand. I'll bet you a dime and a donut you never hear from the prospective "buyer" again.
I always include in my ads, regardless of the size of the item, the sentence "will not ship".
69SS -Quite a story-you came out on top. Thanks for all the advise from everyone. Next time I will include "cash only, will not ship". That should weed out some of them.
He's my system.... works good (took a long time to fine tune)
List on kijiji, "cash only, no shipping"
no phone numbers
do all communications by email ( memory like a Vic 20, good but small)
everyone has a cell phone so I ask what they drive, tell them to meet me under the "big sign" and tims and email when they get there.
I sit at home on my sofa, surf and wait for email then reply with "be there in a minute"(I live that close) and jump in the car.
No address or phone# to google so they can't show up when they feel like it.
works pretty good....

Good going, Steve! I had the same type of scam tried on me when I was selling my first rod. I had a bad gut feeling, called a friend that is in insurance fraud investigation and he said right away it was a scam. I always tell my kids "Go with your gut feelings, because just like when you feel hungry, your gut was right", 9 times out of 10! I'll list automotive stuff that I want to sell, on automotive forums. The members have a better idea of what they are looking at and more common sense. I find I don't get as many dumb questions like "will it fit MY car?" or "is the part certified?" or "is that price for everything in all the pictures?" REALLY?

Hey Nino, hows yor project coming? Scammers are all over the place. Im going to put the engine on in the new year and word it differently. I think I am going to use that rear end in my coupe. Im going to make a custom cruiser out of it. Im slowing down in my old age.
usually a scam. Money order arrives and is fake or whatnot. I had some dick texting me over and over about how he was going to overpay me for this item, then his friend
who is totally cool and works at a consulate in ottawa was going to come by and get the item and difference from me. Hahahah. I texted him a picture of my cat's anus.
I hate these people with a passion, scammers. I put one of those ebay phishing email scammers away for 20+ years back in 2003. He sent the wrong scam to the wrong dude.
Best way is cash only, public place, and maybe even phone the guy for a little chat. The voice will tell you many things.
Is that not illegal? Sexting? Kitty porn? Beastiality ?
So? did he buy the parts? ha ha ....
I'll have to remember this......now that's the cat's ass

It's coming along slowly. I'm finding life is getting in the way again, no time or no motivation. It's funny though the odd time I'll go in the garage for a beer and I'll get an idea, start grinding and pounding away and look up and realize it's midnight and I got to go to bed! Sometimes I'll thrash all weekend and then I don't touch it for a month! Which coupe are you talking about, you have a few irons in the fire there! Hope all is well with you, CHEERS!

Hi Nino, Im thinking of changing the 39. I want to pull the engine and 9in and lower it-old school ,wide whites ,skirts etc. I would use the powertrain in something else, just for the track-nostalgia of course! Im changing the engine on the 56 Cady to a 454 with 700r4 and then theres the 41 Ford rat truck and oh ya,I have to finish the new house. I like to keep busy in my old age!
I got involved with a scam a couple of weeks ago. Guy in Victoria (Supposedly)had a gorgeous '55 Delray tudor with a 540 Merlin, a Richmond 5 speed, new Currie 9", 4 wheel disc brakes, all new Delray upholstery - just a beautiful car. I contacted him through his ad on Kijiji. He sent me more pics of the chassis, interior etc. and said he ship the car to me in Ontario for $32,000. I would never buy a car or anything else for that matter, without touching it first, and told him I'd fly out there and pay him in cash. He wanted to be paid through Paypal only, so I was a bit suspicious because there is no guarantee with paypal on a motorized vehicle. The next response was that he had forgotten to mention it but he had recently moved to Ohio so, since I wouldn't be able to see the car in person, he's ship it and I could pay him, once again, through Paypal. Yeh, right! Emailed him back asking for his new phone number and said I could be in Ohio in an hour and easily anywhere in Ohio the same day. Never heard another word even though I sent quite a few messages. You need to really watch any kind of deal these days. Too good to be true Eh?

This is a bit off the main topic but the telemarketers that keep calling to clean my air ducts even though I am on the no call list were a real pain in the axx. What I did was had them come to the house and turn them away saying I changed my mind. The guy was not that upset but the boss called about five min. later saying I cost him money sending a truck out to my place only to send them back wanting to know what why. I told him it was all his fault that if he followed the no call rules we would not be having this conversation as he should not have called me the first time. I have had them out here 3 times now ( more than one company) and I get very few calls like that any more. You have to cost them $$$$$$$$$ to get them to stop calling. I also had an energy savings guy come also and told him I had new windows and doors installed after he called and sent him away. Another tip is they will try and book you on certain days as they are laying out a rout for the driver. So I book a different day to make me an out of the way job they will not forget. I see telemarketers as my form of entertainment and I have fun stringing them along in different ways with my wife in the background rolling her eyes.

cbc marketplace did a very good piece on ductcleaning. the telemarketers are in asian telephone boiler rooms and are contracted by fly by night businesses.

I had wondered about doing this myself as I am also on the do not call list and am sick of the duct cleaning phone calls. I decided against this method though as I figured that if I am costing them money, they may decide that it's time their call costs ME money ... by slashing some of my tires or throwing something through a window. Maybe the gov't can't control the calls coming from India, but I don't see why they can't charge the duct companies that are employing the India based call centers.
Someone gets a call from India, sets up an appointment, duct company arrives at house where cops are waiting, duct company gets charged. If these duct cleaning companies showed up to an appointment and got fined more often than a paying job, those calls would stop pretty quick.
The duct cleaning companies are not a small time mom and pop business as they also advertise on the radio and use overseas telemarketers. I have had them here three times and I have friends doing the same thing and never a problem. They have people working for them that do the house calls and they do not seem to care as he gets payed anyway. I do not think the owner would not drive from Toronto to where ever to slash someone's tires if he gets a cancelled job. It brought down the number of telemarketer calls that I get and that's what counts. I only get an attempted nasty phone call from the boss for cancelling when I turn the table and give him or her an ear full and they hang-up. They know then I am serious do not call kind of person.

If a young lady comes to your front door saying she is conducting a survey on Rocky Mountain Ticks and asks you to take off your clothes, don't do it!
This is a scam: she only wants to see you naked!
I wish i'd gotten this yesterday. I feel so stupid and cheap now.
