So I wanna build a set of zoomie style headers and use them on my 27 Plymouth project I'm wondering if there legal to use for a street or if there technically not are the cops gonna be on my ass about it all the time I'm gonna put baffles in them and the engine is a 1973 sbc so shouldent have to do any emissions crap. But any info you guys May have would be appreciated
The "real" answer is no, they are not legal.
For a few reasons, 1) the noise, 2) they exhaust in front of the driver (fumes), 3) they are a burn hazard. It's just the way it's worded in the safety inspection.
Get the popcorn out, LOL, watch the vultures descend.
There are tons of rat rods/hot rods out there running them, and I have no issues with them. But like you stated, you might just be drawing unwanted attention.
The emissions etc...are rapidly throwing sticks in the hot rodding world's wheels.
What's about using baffles to dampen the noise I'm not saying I'm going to 100% use them but do like the way they look have you guys got any ideas for something that looks similar but without all the cons
I've looked at some of the info people have posted on other sites and some of it Dident make sense to me like not having enough back pressure causing the engine to run like crap and over heating valves and what not but if that was true why would they use them in stock cars and drag cars. Vehicles built for performance you would think using zoomies would have the opposite effect of what they are looking for so again if all that was true why would they use them? I'm not claiming to know one or the other thing about them so that's why I'm here asking I'm just curiouse and intrested in trying them
Some people should sit down before they hurt themselves
The master vulture at work. Perched on a branch, ready to jump on it's prey. Baiting you is too easy.
How about you sit the **** down and face the facts, they are NOT legal Period. The reason why side pipes have been taken out of production is exactly that MORON! They are burn hazard!
What's your next intellectual/technical comeback, "you're an AZZHOLE", "YOU'RE A Wannabbe", "you're a Know it all". "somebody better sit down before he gets hurt", "Back stabber", etc...
Go away! Is that all the knowledge you have to share?
Tell me something you haven't already, enlighten me with something concrete, as opposed to something destructive.
My son has used them on his 31 Ford for the past couple of years and so far there hasn't been any trouble from the law. He does have baffles in each pipe and it isn't too loud and so far no one has burned themselves on them.
As far as I'm concerned, they are illegal according to the safety inspection standards.

Thanks Glenn for the compliment on my son's car. My other hobby is getting in the way of working on the car but I have almost finished the adapter plate for the T5 transmission to bell housing.
I also had a ton of fun taking the chassis apart that I got from you a while back and I wish I had more to take apart.

Technically they are illegal because of the noise. Baffles might get you by. Yes they can get hot I know people who have been told to put shields on them by the police. I have never seen a head crack or a exhaust valve burn because of open headers but if you run the motor to lean and pour cold water down them then anything is possible. Any car I've ridden in with this set up was to noisy after a few miles and became unbearable.
And Bob said, "Technically they are illegal", kinda what I said. Again... Keep up the good work Kitty.
Hope you're sitting down...
You keep trying to try to prove me wrong. And you will even back up others that, research the theory and come up with formulas etc... In my favor may I add. And repeatedly you persist to challenge me. You think I have an "Inferiority" complex. Glenn...you are the "poster child" of inferiority complex. Your pictures, posts, etc... screams "I need attention".
I don't know where to go with this post anymore. Ego's ...
I'll accept my "**** disturber of the year" award via simulcast if need be, if I don't get it, we all know it's an inside vote.
You have yet, proven me wrong, but kudo's for your persistence.
Thanks for trying, move along, I have "bigger" fish to fry.
After your first post saying they we're illegal believed you I was just looking for what other info everyone had on them as well and I got plenty of it so thanks everyone for your info on the topic
i was told a long time ago that zoomies on a naturally aspirated engine will hurt performance as a collector is needed for proper scavenging. you don't see zoomies on pro comp dragsters, always a tuned header and collector system. it was a pro crew chief told me this about 40 years ago.

You should check into what you need for emissions on that '73 block. You will need more than just a PCV.
Shame a thread has to ruined with personal bashing.

I have never saw Collectors on a "Pro Comp" car. Pro Comp was a mix of Alcohol Dragsters and Funny Cars. I think you were thinking of Competition Eliminator cars like Eco-Dragsters and Dragsters etc.
Buy the cheap set of zoomies that have been offered, run them till you get hassled.
Are they legal? It really doesn't matter until you are handed a ticket (IF you are ever handed a ticket).
There are plenty of Harleys out there running straight pipes (meaning No Baffles) and short exhaust and they seem to keep running. Stick a baffle in each pipe and call that your back pressure.

I love this site. I love all the "informative" conversations. The beauty of building what you want is because it's what "YOU" want. Boys, this hobby has enough enemies without the ego's of some really talented builders destroying it from with-in. I left the sandbox in the schoolyard. Let's keep the subject for-most please.
For Me I always liked brainstorming, different views, opinions, healthy arguments, schoolyard fights, mini skirts, stinky finger, tipping over out-houses, loud exhaust, rusty rockers, no floors, full moons, I have learned a lot by watching, listening, asking the dumb questions, making mistakes, getting up and trying again when I fell down or got my azz kicked..I have found with women if you turn them upside down in a 45 gallon drum with no pants they all smell the same .. I like opinions, debates, arguments, differing thoughts and controversial opinions..
It is what makes this a democracy with the freedom of speech and the absolute right to be wrong, or right, or someplace in between..I try to learn something from every post even if I disagree, or don't understand, I enjoy seeing, reading or participating in a spirited discussion it's good for our cardiovascular health..way better than a lot of boards where every body is a azz kisser, or goody-goody.. or likes to whine about the those who do engage in spirited discussions.. I notice those who like to come and make those little pissy remarks never have anything to say, never have an argument or take a position, content to be fence sitters until they think it's safe to go with the winner..I enjoy and respect entrepreneurs they are the leaders ,they are often loud and boisterous but creative and courageous by nature the rest are just followers.. kinda like if you don't own a schnauzer then you just have a dog...
