I know it isnt a hotrod, but there is paint work involved so it will be interesting to some. It also will show that a running driving truck can be achieved for under 1000$. I in reality, ive only spent about $350 so far for two trucks; one truck I just robbed everything I needed off of it and sent it away to the scrap yard. The other one with the running motor will be staying. However, the $1000 number is there because I am getting free leftover paint and body supplies from my dad, and am going to try to get around my cracked windshield, saving me about $200 on paint, and $220 for the windshield. I also have to spend around 200$ on brakes, as the fronts are chewed to pieces and the rear wheel cylinder is blown.
As for what has been done so far, I bought two trucks; a blue one and a green one. The blue one is running, but needs brakes and some body work. The green one had the XLT package, so it had a nice chrome front end, box, and tailgate, along with a good door and hood. All of these were taken, and then the blue trucks parts and the rest of the green truck were taken to the scrap yard. I should mention we also took a 4:10 or 4:11 rear axle from the back of the truck as well for the nova drag car project.
After that was done, I just started some sanding. The car is just going to get scuffed, and do some quick body work on it and then it will be painted. My dad has some base and cheap clear, and then singlestage paint. The jambs will be done in base clear, and then the single stage will be used for the outside of the car and blended into the areas where they meet, like inbetween the box and cab etc.
So ive been working on the jambs mainly, so here are some pictures of whats been done so far. Thanks for looking.
Thats great to see we all have to start somewhere and this will be a great project to fine tune your skills and besides any day in the shop is a good day!!
Geez why do you two always have to tear everything apart! Just kidding Ben. Looks like a great deal and some more learning as you go. Wishng you all the best and Merry Christmas.
Cheers
Well, once again You've got one hell of a great start and with the capital you've got in it you're laughing already. You'll be even happier when it's done and I'll be happy for you too Ben, just like the last one!

LOL You know us too well Kurt so I definitely get the joke!! Merry Christmas back at ya as well! Other than the passenger side door, everything else had to come off anyway. We are doing a colour change and it's easier with the doors off. This will be a "quick" paint job but as most know .....my definition of quick is not the same as everyone else's. LOL I could show Ben how to mud in dents, but won't. We'll pick them, dolly or stud gun them out close first. We could stuff newspaper in the rust holes of the box and glass it and mud it, but we won't. While he has to learn to do the welding in of the patch panels and I don't expect it to be perfect but he's going to learn how and it starts with this truck box. The goal is that what I know...he will know. Then he can (as I did) expand on the knowledge that his father taught him and get better. or something like that. LOL
Anyways about the freebies
I painted my daughters sunfire Eastwood's Chop top silver single stage a few years back. She had a brake line blow and bumped a truck messing up her hood. I replaced the hood but we had to get more paint and it only came in a gallon. Before She had time to let me paint it, she bought a new Mazda. So 1 gallon of Eastwood's chop top silver single stage paint waiting for someone to use it. Freebie!!!
I also have 1/2 a gallon of Eastwood's urethane primer that I bought to try and while it wasn't bad stuff, I like the Nason primer better. So another freebie to use up.
I had purchased a quart of silver chromabase in advance of doing a customers car rust repair- car got wrote off before we could book a time. So I didn't charge for the paint figuring I would use it up somewhere so again - Freebie. This will be what we use for the jambs and behind the cap and box. Not quite a perfect match to the eastwood stuff but close enough and we need all the eastwood gallon for the outside.
When I was doing cars for business I was stocked on sand paper- so freebie again.
I think Ben's math is wrong on the trucks price two.
truck one-$250
truck two-$350
minus $25 for battery
minus $80 for tires sold
minus $141 scrap metal
minus $51 scrap metal
which leaves $53 left which I said I would give him for the rear end for the nova.
So that means $250 total!!
Details details but who's count'n anyways!

I know the order isnt the best, and we wouldnt do this this way on a real car, but Im on a budget and time table, and my dad had heated the shop up recently to do some other work, so we both saved $$$
The trucks jambs are now painted and cleared, but this time around, I sprayed the paint and clear.
Surprisingly it turned out good, but my dads a good teacher so it worked out nicely.
Heres the pictures in base...
And the clear (only two runds, and they were in the trikcky spots.
Both runs were in the clear. I missed the pull off (my finger didnt come quite off) so I got a run on both sides in the door jambs under the hinge, so no one will know anyways.
It layed out quite nicely, both the base and the clear. Metallic is even, and the clear is a nice finish too, quite flat.
Next up is the heavier body and rust work.

the colour is going to be Eastwoods Chop top silver. The base we put on the jambs was a "close enough" match to it but was a dodge colour called Radiant Silver I believe.

wow two cool looking vehicles and youth too!!!!!!!!!!! I'm jealous
Good for you Ben
It's nice to see the bond/connection that you both have with each other.
TMJ
Thanks for the comments. Just wait till you see the surprise that may be going on the truck. There may be two surprises, but I doubt on the second one. The first is more likely. But you'll have to wait to see.
If you havent read the "Awesome Member Alert" post I made, slim gave me a motor, trannie and a ton of other parts. He also sold me another ranger today. Finally he gave me some thunderbird seats, and coincidentally, they fit in the truck perfectly, the only modification required being switching the seat brackets, which also switched perfectly. Im just getting luicky...
The Thunder Bird Seat brackets came off and the truck ones went on seamlessly. Had them in Slim's old truck today and they look, fit, feel, and function great. They will replace the really bad looking ones in my truck. Pictures or its fake so they say...
nope...not yet. We've been getting the truck from slim stripped and ready to go to scrap yard before the snow comes next week. We are also going to use the box off it and it needs a couple things off the other box which we will be doing today. Ben's out in the shop now.
We finished my one sons car which was hit by the deer and got it all fixed up looking like new. The list is getting smaller but the clock is ticking because Ben gets his full drivers license Jan 21 I believe and then he has to learn standard shift.

We cut the cat off, but we are keeping it, as they are known to rot. My teachers has been welded so many times it looks like a big drip, but its a farm truck, so he doesnt care.
Dads been hard at work while im at my moms place for the week. Hes gotten a lot of patches in the box. The only one he didnt do is the one with the white seamsealer.
some more progress. Ben and I got quite a bit done Saturday. He has pics that fit before mine but he is working this weekend so He'll just have to fall in behind.
Here's one of the pieces Slim gave Ben after we put in on the truck. The bad one is shown as well.
The tail gate and the box came off Slims old truck as well.
Thanks for the positive comments^^^

I should also add after seeing Ben's pics that we are continuing to use up leftovers on this truck. This is not being done to "show car" specs but Ben does need to learn the correct way of doing filler work and sanding of filler. The paint was left over Nason Epoxy that I just wanted to get rid of since there was only a soup can full left. We used SPI epoxy on his Camaro and I liked it and will use it on future jobs. I put it on the filler and the bare metal in the wheel wells. The grey primer was the left over Eastwood 2k urethane primer. Not sure how it is going to sand yet but it sprays really thick and if I ever bought it again, I would buy the reducer for it. It fills heavy but had lots of orange peel.

Thanks. The car is mainly needing to get done so I can drive it to coop everyday. I got my G2 today, so thats step one, then an interview tomorrow, and step three, the truck. I got untill a couple weeks into february.
Nice work Ben. Congratulations on the G2 and good luck with the interview. If you ever need a reference I think you have about 100 here willing to put in a good word for a great young man.
The "old Man" got a few things done while the kid was out getting his G2 and studying for exam while at his Moms this week. The rest of the Jambs are done.
The bed liner covers a lot so we didn't waste time and materials on the box floor and sides. The liner comes up and over the bed sides.
Cheers!

this is only a low budget only if a person does everything himself ,way to much nice work done to be consider a low price paint job in my book , if a customer has to pay to get it done great workkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk
We fixed a couple exhaust problems and at long last the "box" was united with the truck!! We are getting there. Still some more dings to fix on the hood and some primer to spray. Then finish sand and well hopefully paint it soon. The fella who sold the truck to Ben doesn't do any of his own work so when we took the rear brakes apart and found missing pieces.....I let him know it might be time to find a new mechanic!! The flat bar that goes between the shoes was gone and two other parts. So that has hung us up a bit because there is one pc that we can't get from the parts store and have to go to the wreckers.

some more progress tonight and also a couple nights ago. Saturday I bolted the box back on and finished sanded it. I finished all the dent and rust work. The windshield area will be the first to bust open again with rust I'm sure. It was very deep pitted but this is a very low buck job and there was no way we were going to cut out steel and replace it in the windshield area. It is, what it is...a scrap yard bound truck that Ben with drive a year or two while he gets on his feet so to speak. I epoxied the cab and then went out and snowblowed for a bit then hit it with urethane primer. On that note...the Eastwood 2k Urethane primer sanded really nice on the box and had a very good build up. I don't know how it will hold up and or shrink. I guess we shall see.
Since this is going to be painted single stage paint and again we don't want to waste tons of time on this thing, I didn't make the whole car one colour first. This is risky with some colour due to the low hiding of most paints. We did the jambs with base clear left overs to conserve paint so that we have 1 full gallon reduced to spray on the out side and hopefully not have any see through issues.

You are partially correct Rich . Parts of it the dirty black ranger was driven back over the scale so some of it , has made it all the way to the dump Its going to be a great little truck. perfect winter beater.
I don't mean to be the smart ass here...but winter is almost over...In my opinion, a "Winter Beater" is just that, a beater.
Don't get me wrong, it is being built on the cheap, and it is a good learning project, but I would have just certified it the way it was and driven the wheels off of it while it it still "winter"...lol

My 2 cents.
Very good point....But Ben just got his drivers license on the twenty first of Jan. 2015 so the first part of the winter he didn't need it and he still has 2 weeks in Feb. then March and april before he puts his Camaro on the road. The original truck had major box rott in the wheel wells and the drivers door. The learning experience is one of the biggest factors and... I don't mean to be as you said "a smart a$$" but we are doing it this way because "we can!" LOL

At his age he has lots of winters left to drive it,,, unlike myself and possibly some others on here
