I don't mean to be the smart ass here...but winter is almost over...In my opinion, a "Winter Beater" is just that, a beater. Don't get me wrong, it is being built on the cheap, and it is a good learning project, but I would have just certified it the way it was and driven the wheels off of it while it it still "winter"...lol
My 2 cents.
Beater babe magnet factor...2
Cool clean ride with thumping stereo babe magnet factor... 10
Do the math...I know Ben has...lol
With missing break parts and other safety issues going through the truck and giving it the once over along the way was a wise idea I'd say....that and Rich HAS to take everything down to the last nut...its in his DNA Hi Rich

It is going to be a nice truck when finished...when I was in high school I bought a '83 Cutlass Supreme. I put a 327 SBC in front of a 700r4 in it. it was a nice car. My beater was a '94 Mazda B4000, 5 speed 4x4 (basically a Ford Ranger). It didn't go to well in the winter with the 37" x 12" TSL's, but it was fun helping the girls get in... ;)
Car is now finish sanded and in the booth. If everything goes as planned, it will be masked and prepped tomorrow and on thursday hopefully in paint. Have to arrange the safety, windshield, and e test.
Truck is painted. Single stage silver....is there anything harder to paint?? Turned out not bad. Good enough for what we wanted but we always want better. LOL The paint fought me right from the start to the end and in a couple spots it won the victory. It seems like you can either have it shiny and molted or even metallic but dull. I tried to balance it out. If I was to say anything about eastwoods single stage metallic...I would say put clear over it (like they advice) and don't go for shiny with the colour. I've only sprayed it twice and haven't had much luck with it. It sure don't spray like centari used to but maybe it was just because it was silver.
The one box side is really ugly and we will see about fixing that some how. Paints all gone......lost to the fight!! LOL

Had another look and texted a few times to Ben. It is what it is and we both new that the paint was not what we really wanted to use but the price was perfect. I think we will put a semi gloss black Rally type stripe along the beltline down low to hide a couple issues. We'll see. On the bright side... the truck is actually very straight!! And other than that one box side... looks pretty good.
Thanks for all the positive comments in the thread.
Rich

Silvers and golds can definately be a bee-atch and I too favoured the Dupont Centari good stuff. I used to follow up the extra wet final coat with a fog coat to get the metalic to "stand up". It seemed to work well for all but the worst tiger stripes.
From the looks of the pictures, I like it and you just can't beat the price!!!! Way to go guys!

That's exactly what I used to do Fordy. Last coat then go right back over same panel and fog to even everything out. This stuff because I had a hard time with it before, I started cross coating on the second coat and every coat after. Anyway. I don't think I will spray single stage again on an exterior of a car again anyways. LOL It just doesn't compare to base clear in my opinion. It is cheap and even if you put clear on it is still cheap.

After a smoke break, pic up a litre and redo the quarter! Easy for me to say I know, but if that's the only area why not? Isn't that your shop? If so who's kickin you out? If it were me that's what I would do. You worked hard on it, plus that's your business card for Nova's.
A couple things I've noticed about this post is that the young still have talent, not all watch video games 24-7 and the other is how important a stereo is, of course as you get older that can change a bit, meat loaf on a 8 track with house speakers sitting on the back seat just ain't that appealing anymore

Eastwood's only sells this stuff buy the gallon. Or else I probably would. Ben and I have discussed the outcome and while somewhat disappointing(more for me as the guy that painted it) The truck looks decent from 4ft away even on the bad side. The front windshield went into it today and the total Ben has into the truck is still under $800.00 probably not including the stereo. We really don't have that much time into the truck (he has way more than I) and it is almost all put back together and ready to go. We are going to put a stripe on the belt line similar to the factory ford stripe. As far as it being a calling card....the truck is straight, the magnet still sticks in all but one area. It was cheaply done and will serve it's purpose as a nice winter beater. The paint was close to 4 yrs old sitting in a can on a shelve waiting. But the most important thing was that Ben learned a lot on this build. He did most of the prep, painted all the jambs with base clear, installed his own stereo with no help as well as the new ignition switch and the list goes on.
The big bonus was that we had fun doing the truck!! It was work but it was the good kind. It's a lot more fun working together on something than by yourself.
Should have some more pictures later.
Slim-that was probably exactly what Ben meant!! Whatever that meant???LOL
A big THANKS to Don from Don's Upholstery and Auto glass for coming out to the shop to put the glass in!! Awesome work.

Truck looks great in the pics. What's the problem with the quarter? I'm not seeing an issue in the pics.
Also, you mention the jams were shot with base and clear, yet you also mention the truck being shot with single stage. I thought base/clear was two stage and single was colour, no clear. Did I miss something or am completely wrong?

Your absolutely right! The jambs were painted with a different quart of left over base with clear over it. We did this to save paint for the upcoming fight with the single stage that we put on the exterior.
The problem is what we call molting and I have some metallic sags. I didn't take any pics of it close enough to show.

Well, like my dad said, it was another great experience that I learned even more on. I did a lot more body work myself this time and like he said, painted the jambs after a little demo from dad myself. The list goes on an on, but its nice to know that you can do these things yourself, and have it turn out.
I can make fun of the truck all I want; its junky i-beam front suspension, filthy interior and the 10 pounds of rust it left on the floor, but its really cool now and I like what its become. Its a five speed manual, so that will be fun, and its a whole new experiance to have my own truck that I can hop in any time and not have to worry about getting a little dirty. It isnt a show truck by any means, but as Dad said, its straight, respectable, and it will serve its purpose till it ends up where it should have gone in the first place.
If any one questions it, or sees this later, I chose to do the rally stripe from wheel well to wheel well only for a couple reasons. 1. It fixes the quarter panel mistake, and serves the second purpose of setting it apart from the other silver rangers and 2. Rally stripes rarely go any further than we did. Ford Mustang and GT, ford focus ST all dont wrap around, and while this truck would look acceptable with the stripe all the way around, and heck, maybe it would look better, I like it the way it is, and thats all that really matters.
I would like to shout out a big thanks again for the support, positive comments and advice, and just for viewing another one of our threads. I achieved the point that I first stated in the first post..."a running driving truck can be achieved for under 1000$". And, now its a straight, running and driving truck for under a thousand.
I will post up whether it passes safety and e test and all that other junk just to let you know the end results, but the main of the body work and all that other stuff it basically done now. Thanks again..
good for you guys. You have a respectable vehicle you won't be ashamed of and won't draw any unwanted attention from the law. Most of all the time spent together is priceless.
I agree,,the stripe needs to go all the way around the back..Well Done
TMJ
Well remember we posted that it was missing some of the brake parts??? It was actually missing one of the cables that go to adjuster, the bar that goes between the shoes just under the wheel cylinder and the small rocker plate that the cable goes around(for lack of a proper term). Ben put the short parking brake cable on Sunday afternoon but came in extremely frustrated with the Ford style brakes. So tonight I went out to figure it out while he is working. My first thought was something doesn't look right and after checking the rust and patterns on the old shoes Ben had put things back the same way as they were so I finished off what he couldn't get and moved to the other side. Long story short...the guys who had done the brake job had put the shoes on in reverse. They had the big shoe on the front and the shorter on the back. That was what looked funny when I first looked at what Ben had done. Needless to say I had to take the first side completely apart and start over.
And some people wonder why us car guys like to do this stuff ourselves????

Well the truck is over at the shop getting a safety... or not getting one. I dont know. There were more mechanical issues found while we bled the brakes.
Two brake lines blew. The one on the right side of the differential, and the one from the master into the block on the drivers side flex line. That was not fun. After a chiselling, and somehow managing to save the clip, I bent up a new line and attached it back up and put the clip in. It actually somehow stayed, so hopefully all is well.
The floor had a couple holes we didn't notice on the drivers side. Rivets and seam sealer. It was 10 at night, and we didn't have time to rip the carpet and seats.
The flex lines have a couple cracks in the outer sheath. This is probably the most likely thing to fail the safety.
And finally, the steering is a little sloppy, but so was my dads suburban and it passed.
Ill post what happens when I know. Im just hoping for a pass. I need it for co op next week.
Well, 20 years or older needs an appraisal, so gotta try and get that after e test today, and if the ministry is open late enough, ill pay taxes and get plates and stickers tomorrow. Driving around with a sticker trip permit right now.
That may cost you a few extra $$$ because you will get an appraisal of the value of truck the way it looks now. If you can get someone to get it on value before it was all repaired, it would be cheaper. Any licenced car salesperson can do that for you.

The Mechanic next door did the appraisal and was extremely reasonable to Ben. He could see all the work and took that into consideration. Ben is now plated and legally on the road. He is doing really well at the "Manual Trans" shifting and picked it up really quick. Even though the paint is less than fantastic, he is getting lots of positive feedback and "good jobs". He is already talking about the next one.
Thanks to all who gave comments and had a look at the thread.

Good Stuff! Congrats to you both Rich and Ben!! Maybe on the next build we could get Jacob to do all the 'in progress' photography?
I need to get him a camera this year for the shows and see what he can do with it. I remember you suggesting that last summer. He may surprise us with some cool shots from a 6yr olds perspective.
