Dropped the fuel tank on the truck today. (53 Merc M100)

Can anyone tell me what kinda fuel sending unit this is?

I'm pretty sure it's not the original merc/ford one. Is this Chevy?? It would explain why the fuel guage (original on the dash) reads backwards, chev and ford read opposite don't they? Low ohms is empty on chevy, and full on ford?

Looks Chevyish.....Original tank was in the cab of a 53 Ford/Merc, was it not?

yup GM unit dont know the year but looks like 70s to early 80s.....

That's not the stock gage float!!!! Original, was held on the top of tank with about 6 machine screws, & no fuel lines on sender!!! Looks def. GM with the retainer twist ring!!!

 I could be wrong but I thought prenvious generation to 53-55 had tanks in the cab?

 I googled 53 F100....got this pic...tank is in cab, filler is behind door...I believe it was in cab right up until 1968 or so.

My filler neck is in the same spot. But my fuel tank is like the one in this pic here I just found.

Pretty sure you're right that GM is low resistance on empty. My 68 would go past full when the wire came off the sender and go empty when you grounded the wire. We put a GM tank in my friend's mid '80s ford plow truck and the gauge read backwards. Don't think it was accurate, the resistances may be different but it was backwards.

53 to 55 are outside rail mount, before and after are in cab....... Sender Ohms

 

  • Ford up to 1986 - 73-10 Ohms
  • Ford 1987 & up - 16-158 Ohms
  • GM up to 1964 - 0-30 Ohms
  • GM 1965-1997 - 0-90 Ohms
  • GM 1998 & up - 40-250 Ohms
  • Mopar up to 1986 - 73-10 Ohms
  • AMC 1950-1977 - 73-10 Ohms
  • Autometer -240-33 Ohms is the most common however other ohm ranges are made
  • Classic Instruments - 240-33 Ohms (excluding vehicle specific gauge kits which use factory ohm range)
  • Dolphin - 0-90 Ohms
  • Dakota Digital - Programmable to work with most Ohm range senders
  • VDO - 10-180 Ohms

empty to full  so chev would be 0 empty 30 full up to 64

No problem nick just posted it in  case anyone else wanted to know. The in cab tank fill, will always be higher then whats on your truck . Easy way to tell if its inside or under

Just a little more info. There are 3 types of fuel sending units wiring programs; Ford, G.M. and Stewart Warner.

Thanks, I ended up going with the dakota digital drop in dash for my truck (not the digital screen, the analog needles) It's completely programmable and has a preset already for the gm90 sender!
