Transmission Floor Jack

Hi All

I am looking for a Transmission Floor Jack or a Floor Jack attachment. Or anybody that has one to loan out for a few weeks.I am taking the 2 speed powerglide out of the 56 chevy and putting in a 700R4. In the Courtice area I would much appreciate it.

Thanks Tim

I've personally pulled a few transmissions by myself with a decent sized floor jack, a 3/4" piece of plywood and a ratchet strap. Actually works quite well

in most cases there is not enough room for one of those jack adaptors - I tried numerous times before giving mine away

the jack, some wood and a ratchet strap works best

Just a couple of thoughts.....Those cast iron Powerglides are real pigs....be real careful. Also, remember the mounts are part of the bellhousing on those.

What does the engine have for mounts? Is it still the front mounts or have side mounts been adapted? If not, you are going to have a real long space between the front mounts and the rear mount of the 700R4....too long and it really stresses the trans bellhousing. I would suggest pulling the whole works out and putting in some side engine mounts....Just my thoughts

really? - most trannies today have no front mounts, and all have rear mounts with no issues - or are you suggesting that the motor only has tho front block mounts rather than the mid mounted engine mounts - which - yes indeed would cause an issue

if its a stock 56 it will be front mount only if it hasn't been converted to side mount. there will have to be a rear tranny mount cross member installed for the 700.

Hi The car has a 350 SBC with front block mounts only (as I just found out last night) I have been researching side tranny mounts and the rear cross member for the 700R conversion which I think might be the way to go due to the fact I don't have the space in the garage to pull the engine and install side engine mounts which would be the best way to go. Just saying.
Any thoughts.

The front mounts were support for the  much larger bell mounts. If you can find a bell mount for the 700 that would work if not weld or bolt in the side engine mounts then remove the power glide. Then  all you have to deal with is the rear , Once the rear is in place pull the fronts.

Trans jack.JPGI thought this was a slick idea, using a cherry picker as a trans jack. I'm going to mod mine so I have it for the down low work that comes along now and then. Found it on Homemade Tools site, gentleman from Raleigh NC came up with it.

I should add...he just moved the slide in piece, from the upper boom down to a pair of tabs he welded onto the cross piece at the main upright. Then used a 2 x 2 extension from there to a plate bolted on the end for the trans to sit on. You could get as fancy with it as you want. A cherry picker and trans jack for very little added expense or work. Good deal.

Most 55/56 57 cheby's have had the rear mounts that were riveted to the frame "hacked" off by previous owners & use the 'long' span & wonder "why' the trans case keeps splitting?? or engine really laying on it's side under a hard right foot. On my old 56 nomad & used 70 /71 Monte Carlo frame mounts & engine mount & welded them to the frt. cross member!!! Can do it with engine in the car & gives you a good side mount & with rear cross member for transmission. stops the twist & middle flex!!! I pulled the engine after & fully welded them as you can't get to the bottom part, other than a 'tack" from underside.

Hey, Many thanks for posting this, what a great idea.  I've either bench pressed them in (T5 and Super T10), or used a wobbly floor jack (TH350) ... I already have a "cherry picker" so I'm halfway there ... I can guide it in while the wife works the hoist (assuming she doesn't "accidentally" lose pressure when I'm under it).  Again, thanks for posting.

Here is the kit from Danchuck

This conversion kit makes mounting the Turbo Hydra-Matic 350, 400 and 700-R4 transmissions a breeze.  (This kit will also fit late model Chevrolet overdrive transmissions with minor modifications.)  Engineered to last, our conversion kit is built with components that far exceed the strength that is required of them and rubber cushioned to absorb shock and vibration.  Easy to install; simply bolt it to the frame.  Danchuk # 870 will work on any 1955-1957 classic Chevy.  Must use with front factory motor mounts.  Not recommended for high performance applications.  Made in the USA.

I have used this 1/4 steel plate for transmission's and rear-ends many many times. Just take off the original cupped plate on the jack and make one like this to put on. The original cup on mine just lifts right off on a vertical shaft and convert in 2 seconds. It also stays level what ever height you take it to and stable.
