Shell Rotella T diesel oil has the zinc additive for your engine that the regular engine oil does not have. Higher(content) Zinc Additives(ZDDP) are required for flat tappet engines and cartridge bearings. I have been using Rotella T in a 1930 V8 engine now for 5 years. Can also be used in high performance and motorcycles.

I would recommend Brad Penn oil, it is formulated with 1500 ppm zinc just like the oils that were in use when the car was built. It is available in your area at RP Oils Ltd, 1111 Burns St, unit 3 in Whitby. I get mine from W O Stinsons in Napanee and they have outlets throughout the Ottawa valley. If you Google Brad Penn Oil and look at where available in Canada, there are quite a few outlets. Using a zinc additive doesn't always work because of the way new oils are formulated to be catalytic friendly so the zinc additive basically separates and sits in the bottom of the pan.

Any sites that I've been on and this question comes up the answer usually goes on for days. Don Palmer is building my engine and has a great reputation! He will be firing it up with Rotella and that's what he said I should keep using. HRD

I suggest you do a lot of internet searching on this issue before you decide which oil to use. I have seen a chart somewhere on the internet that shows the amounts of zinc in several different oils, with the study being performed by an independent source.

I also remember reading that Shell Rotella no longer contains the zinc level that it used to.

My understanding is that roller cam engines don't need as high a zinc level in their oil as a flat tappet engine. I also understand that high zinc levels (in oil) will damage catalytic converters. Because of this, the oil companies have reduced the level of zinc in the oils available now. Apparently the oils presently available don't have the zinc levels a flat tappet cam needs to survive. I said "apparently" because this is all arguable. I have read that some people think the high zinc level is really only needed for performance cams that use high valve spring pressures. Others claim that any flat tappet cam is doomed without the correct level of zinc in the oil.

Me? I run whatever Canadian Tire has on sale when I need an oil change. I have two vehicles with stock, flat tappet SBC engines in them (and catalytic converters), and have yet to run into any issues with cam/lifter wear.

I used brand name 10W30 what ever was on sale, did my own changes on my GM work van. I bought it new and sold it 10 years later with over 470k on it. The guy drove it for 3 years around town with the same engine. It still ran when he sold it. My neighbour leased his truck and was taking it back his lease was over. It had 32k on it, told me he was taking it in for an oil change I said why bother? He said....because Its never had one!!! I feel sorry for the new owner!

X2 on the Brad Penn, for engine oil, I've been using it for a few years now, great product. Prior to that I used Royal Purple, and had no issues. I'm running Royal Purple in my standard trans.

If your or anyones engine and trans is still working well confuse  How would we know any difference?    e.g.  as compared to reg stuff that works well too

I'm just wondering if a lot of this fancy smancy stuff  is worth the cost?

Know of a few engines that "crapped out' on oil with no Zinc. took the cams out & rockers & valve stems went too!!! I play it safe & use Lucas product for supplement.

I'm a sucker, I buy all this publicized "better" stuff, just because...Just Kidding.wink

There's a lot of reading involved, but simply put, Synthetic oils have a much longer durability then conventional (fossil fuel), oils.

Throw in some zinc, and there you go.

The cost of those fancy smancy products, is maybe 20% more, and considering an oil change 5L will cost you about $30. if you do it yourself, and Brad Penn oil is around $9. a qt (us).

I think for the extra $10-$15. an oil change, I'll risk it. How many oil changes a year?

When you are spending $10,000 on a rebuild do your homework and phone the oil companies for clarification for they are more than pleased to help. There is a lot of bad info on the web by so-called experts.

Another thing how many cars with Preston in copper rads????? That is a big no no also Preston eats the solder and any silicone based gaskets.

delco e.o.s. is only 8 bucks a bottle and is also used as an assembly lube.
