power steering part number???

Ok - so the power steering pump disintegrated on my 71 Chevelle ss454

It is a pressed on double pulley style with the big tapered reservoir, rather than single pulley and tower type resevoir

No one seems to be able to find me a part number in any aftermarket supplier for the press on pulley style pump

Every supplier tells me that it should be a bolt on single pulley pump - however - I have seen a couple used ones on Evilbay, so I know from that, that this isn't a cobble job

 

I have been able to find pumps with the press on pulley from 75 up for 1/2 ton trucks, but do not know if they will retro fit my car

 

Anyone out there know anyone that can hook me up with a part number or better - a pump that will fit?

If not - who out there rebuilds pumps reasonable?

I just search for 1970 Buick Wildcat as I know that came with a press fit but even RockAuto has bolt on replacement pumps.

Even Cardone shows it as a bolt on.

 

Maybe they no longer repop a press on type??

 

I know the one I bought from Cardone for my 70 block was also a bolt on type.

'75 was the 1st year GM went to press on PS pulleys, early/mid '80s they went to metric thread pump fittings

2drpost - I am not sure that's true - I have bookmarked two used Ebay units for 1971, and have my own that would suggest GM had some units as press on back at least to 1971

anyone know what a variable ratio pump as described in Slims link is - never heard of one before?

so - all else failing - does anyone know if the pump dimensions and mounting bosses are the same from year to year? ie shaft length, boss locations etc - so I might just retro fit a 75 pump to my car. Only differences I can see is the return line exits in different positions from year to year and model to model - any of which would appear to work on my car with a little tweaking or I could even swap my housing over if I repaired it

a hollander's interchange manual is a great thing to have. it takes the guess work out of parts inter-changability. i have one for my corvette and i will be ordering one for my chevelle.

I have several pumps with res. The mounting bosses are all in the same location, as far as I could tell the shaft looks to be the same length.
It's just the placement of the low pressure line inlet that is different.

well - I got the pump off- what a cobbled mess - missing bolts - made bolts etc

so it is a metric pump - says so right on the side of it - no part number though, and the housing is seized onto the pump - couldn't even drive it off

so now to figure out what pump might fit it - 70s C10 half ton is looking good

wish me luck - and thanks for the help

 this is correct, the only differences being, bolt on/press on pulley, metric bolt and fitting threads and different return line placement/angles

If you go to rock auto look between 1987- to 1991  pickups . they will be metric  port  , press on pulley .so you just need the tank return were you want it.
