depends on your driving & what YOU want. 4:10 aren't the greatest for the street!!! What Trans are you running? I've got 3:42's with a tremec 5 spd & it launches just fine, has a low 1st gear!!! Had a set of 4:11 in a 56 Nomad yrs ago with Turbo 350 & was in 3 rd gear before getting through a intersection & impossible to drive on Hwy, engine turning BIG RPM's Noisy, & the "$HITS" for mileage & gas was cheaper back then!!!If your into drag race on the street?? then go for it, but I wouldn't. The 52 performs well, will plant you in the seat, & still get 22 MPG on Hwy with 358 SBC & dual quads, Cammed & head work done!!! To each their own just My Opinion Pete

I have a set of 3.91s in the Ranchero - plenty with all the torque from the Big Block, allows me to "light 'em up" at will anytime I feel the urge. I take 2 lane hwys as apposed to screaming on the 401

has any one : in the shop : driven a car on the streets or high way with 4.10,s
is this being recommended to you purely for performance ie acceleration and why
race , I have a friend of mine who with changing from 4.56 to 3.70 and a different brand convertor and minor carb tuning went almost a full second quicker at the strip , st thomas an cayuga .
street , 72 chevelle with 2.73,s , mild sbc , turbo 350 , dog on the street , great cruiser on highway , changed to a 700 r4 an 3.42, now is a capable street perfomer and still great on highway .
gear ratio , as with any aspect regaurding performance , depends on convertor , trans , weight , tire size , and intended driving styles
there,s an old hot rodding term . don,t strip your streeter
translated , means don,t make your street car into too too much of a drag car cause you,ll end up hating it .
maybe I,m just getting older but a 700r4 an 3.70,s is as high as i go these days .
but you know what got older faster then me ???. driving from barrie to cayuga with 3. 70 ,s , 3.89.s an 4.20,s with a 4 spd stick , after 2 ,5 hrs of that , man i couldn,t even go near my car for half an hour at least after that drive , why even turn the radio on , you couldn,t hear it . LOL the good old days .... Not ... LOL ..77.

Run the numbers down to tire diameter threw all the gears and compare it to your toque band. You can make a 100 hp flathead fun to drive with the right gearing. Without overdrive Id stay away from the 4.10s for the street. There is no reason why you shouldn't have a close idea on how it will pro form before you even buy any parts.
I ran 4:10's in my Trans Am for one summer. The car ran hotter, was slower in the 1/4 and was a lot louder. The 40 Series Flowmasters were screaming all the time. It ran hotter due to the increased RPM I'm guessing and when drag racing the 462 CID Pontiac seemed to run out of steam on the top end. Killer burnouts though and slightly better 60' times, lol. Dropped down to 3:73's and it was a little better but it still ran quicker in the 1/4 with the factory 3.42's so they went back in and haven't touched it since.
I worked my way up from a 273 to the current 373. With a 5sp Tremic anything lower was too low when in 5th. 1600 at 60MPH. Having driven with a 3sp and 410's is not fun. Well it is fun at low speeds but. My advice also is save you money both on the gear and install and a bit of fuel also.
Boy ,this is an exercise in " smarter as you get older ". Had a 59 Chev "sleeper" back in the day , 409 , dual quad , 4.88 gears for the street . It launched from the stop light like Jack the Bear ,got 6 ( !) miles per gallon , and was screaming at highway legal speeds . But I was young and foolish .....learned that lesson ....go 3.73's , a good compromise gear .
If it was me I would run a 3.35 they are nicer to drive. As far as gears go 4.11s are kind of a nowhere gear. If the engine has the screws turned the right way and you want to run the drags I would drop down to a 5.13 or more. I used 5.38 , 5.57. 5.86 and 6.14s but you want to have lots of Rs. After you get down below 4.88 it doesn't seem to matter a lot. The days of "BIG" gears are about gone.
Alright well everyone has answered what I expected. I kept saying the same thing "why"?
Transmission is a 700 r4 and the reality is do I need anymore power.
Certainly don't need the added heat and any louder than what it is. Already changed out the mufflers because the wife and I couldn't carry on a conversation. Not that is a bad thing at times!
As for the guys at the shop their good friends and just like to overkill. But I'm smart enough most times to laugh off some of their ideas and suggestions.
With an overdrive transmission like the TH700R4 you can run 4.10's without a problems. Highway RPM will still be ok (Th700R4 has a .70 OD ratio, making your 4.10, like a 2.87 gear on the highway) but the short 3.06 first gear in the transmission really makes any gear over 3.42 or 3.73 useless in first without a really tall tire.
With normal sized tires, I would leave the 3.73, or even step down to a 3.42 since most 383's have lots of torque because of the 3.75" stroke. For most street cars, about first gear ratio in the 10:1-12:1 range before the torque converter torque multiplication is usually a good place to start (3.06 x 3.73 = 11.41:1). Its not so short that first gear useless, and not so tall that it kills all performance.
the woman,s trans am with 700r4 an 3.70 gears with 245 60 15 rear tires . just pulling onto the street the 1 - 2 shift was maybe 5 to 10 feet . 130 ish K,s was about 2600 rpm ..77.

OUCH! I have 3.00 and want to try 2.47 if it will still pull 7,000 in 4th.
27" x 2.47 x 7,000 = another spun bearing...... but what a ride
