Who Started This new habit at stop lights

We,ve all seen it . who in the he, ll started or thot up this b s , ( as it seems to me ) people not pulling up an stopping behind the car in front of them , but pulling up and leaving a space or two between them and the car in front of them .

who thot this up

and what is sposed to be the point of it

especially when your in traffic and some clown does it in a left turn advance lane , forcing some times one to 4 cars to get caught , not be able to advance an have to wait for the next cycle of lights

I,ve seen from new drivers , foreingnors , to old people doing it ..77.

OK I have done it but with a reason. On many of the new intersections there is a sensor(s) in the road for left turn signals. So one car trips the sensor in the correct spot to turn left. If you leave a gap it seems to trick the system into thinking there are more cars waiting to turn left and thus it triggers the advance green for the left turn. If one car just pulls up right behind the other with no other vehicles behind you typically do not get an advance green.

Maybe it is all just wishful thinking but it does seem to work.

This also leaves room if you get rear ended!!! Less chance of pushing you into car ahead if your right up their A$$

the one that burns me up are these idiots that get as far as they possibly can to the right.........to turn left. what on earth is the rationale behind that one ? unless it's an extra long vehicle or towing - what gives ?

People following the rules of the road ?

Drivers' Education and MTO Drivers' Education book state that you must leave sufficient room between your vehicle and the one ahead of you , to allow you to safely get around the vehicle ahead of you in case they have mechanical issues. In most cases that is equivalent to a car length.

Old retired farmers. We have a lot of that here. You drive the tractor to the right then you turn to the left so that you can see by the load of hay on the wagon.  They also did that to get the wagons lined up with a narrow gate or laneway.

The one I hate, seems to have developed after the power outage in Ontario in August, 2003.

When people came to an intersection during the blackout and the traffic lights were not working at all, they treated it as a four way stop, which is the correct thing to do. However, now when people come to an intersection where the traffic lights are not functioning (ie. flashing amber one way and flashing red the other way) they seem to get confused as to how they should react. Most seem to want to treat it as a four way stop. I can't count the number of times I have come to an intersection and I have a flashing amber light, I slow down and proceed with caution, just like the Highway Traffic Act states and the people waiting the other way at the flashing red light, honk, give me the finger, or actually try to drive through the intersection in front of me. This situation has the potential to be extremely dangerous. Maybe refresher courses for some should be considered.

Best solution I have come up with regarding stupidity on the road is a dashboard camera. You can't change the way others drive but you CAN record them. With dashboard cameras so cheap these days, it just isn't worth it not to have one. I've had or seen tons of close calls where my camera would have recorded who is truly at fault.

Long time ago I spent some time in Detroit. When we were driving through the "dark" part of town and we came to a stoplight that was red and had a car sitting there, we would leave a big space. Just in case some of the "brothers" pulled up behind you to block you in and take everything you had.
Still seems like a good idea in Toronto.

Jarvis , things have changed in Motown .....I rarely go over any more ( too old to be ducking bullets due to my arthritis ) but if I have to go thru the downtown area , I don't stop at a stop sign , and not much more of a quick stop at a light . ......look both ways and keep moving . There are about 400 murders per year and about 400 car jackings . Out of state and out of country licence plates are easy pickings ( assuming they can read the plate ) because they know Canadians don't carry guns .

Oh Boy,, lol,, you just want to rile up the forum eh! ? lol

I see this all the time,, all over town.. but I have a traffic light nearby,, and if you don't park at the white line,, it won't trip... the hwy stays green.. and you can't turn left as the light won't change..

Almost daily,, some ding bat will pull this "stop waaaaay back" stunt ... different people all the time..

depending on traffic.. I will put mine in park,, and run up 3 or 4 cars , bang on the offenders window... and tell them to pull up and trigger the light.

or.. if I can pull around them and park at the white line.. which triggers the light... I wait, wait, wait... till the green cycle is done,, make my turn and leave them behind at the red wondering WTF ... lol.... yes.. I get a kick out of this manouver.. the green is VERY short on this light.. stays green for the hwy for a long time..

and if you want to get going on the other stunts people do....  boys oh boys ...  lol

my biggest eye opener was a guy passed me on the right while I was on the motorcycle.. as I was turning right.. with my left arm in the Right turn signal position ,, after the dust settled.. the fellow told the cop I had my "left arm in the left turn posiiton" as he mimicked my left arm up .... and the cop said.. ah.. sir.. why did you signal left and turn right..?

when I explained,, the COP told me the NEW right hand turn signal is using the RIGHT ARM.... and pointing to the right... as the same for the left turn.. use the left arm,, and point left

REaLly WtF ? !  ha ? you have to be kidding...

so I went to 911 Waterloo Region Safety Village to talk to the expert traffic "teacher" ... and he confirmed they have been teaching the grade 5 kids for a number of years bicycle and car safety.... if you have to use hand signals .. use right hand to point right,, for a right turn!

soooooo... I sat on my motorcycle.. and said... how do I control my throttle when I use my right hand..??? he said ,, same difference.. if you use your left hand.. how do you control your clutch...........

sooooo I said... there is a standard in the WORLD that the MTO mimicks... and people KNOW what the standard signal is ...

but ,, didn't matter.... to hard to teach grade 5 to use left hand to turn right....... confuseconfuse

sigh,,,  on and on it goes...

ok when your sitting in a line of lets say ten cars in the left lane , all parked waiting foir the advance light . if 4 or 5 of those cars park back one or two lengths then the last couple can,t get thru .

about being rear ended ok if,n your the last car in the lane an paranoid . but not if,n you 5 cars into a 10 car lane .

I had no idea it was a new road rule , just thot it was a case of clustergenius where one genius see,s another genius do some thing un genius an follows suit

i thot right turn was left arm out , bent up at elbow . finger position optional ..77.

30 years ago as part of a commercial driving course we were taught to stop behind a vehicle at a point where we can see the back wheel of it, in case the front car cannot move you have a better chance to get around it. We were told in no uncertain terms to never back up without a spotter, which is most ofter not available. I still use this method today. And I stop at a red light when turning right. Had a guy blow his horn at me for this so I took longer to turn the corner.

I don't know about the rest of the world but most stoplights in London and St Thomas with advanced left turn lights are setup so the advanced signal is activated by the third car back. If there is only two car in line and pulled up to the stopblock, no advanced left turn signal.

but I,ve also seen not just people do it in left turn lane , but line of traffic pulling up to a stop an one car hits the brakes an stops two spaces back from the car stopped in frt of him . then it seems like the line of traffic all assuming they were gonna stop another 30 to 40 ft further ahead all gotta jam on the brakes . I,ve been in some situations an you can hear the brakes chirping three , four , five , ??? cars back in the line , and I just wait for the crunch ,
Maybe its logical to some but seems pretty jack azzed idea to me . Just pull up an stop a reasonable distance from the car in front of you ..77.

Then there's the geniuses who use the advance light for a U-turn instead of making a left turn ......happens a lot down here .

It's not a new rule.  I was taught to do this in drivers ed in 1981.

I think I read some time ago the legal distance to stop behind another car at a stop light / sign is 12 feet

at intersections with the traffic sensors in the road , if the light is half stale , let your car move just slightly to trigger the sensor into changeing the light for you sooner

dosen't work until the light's halfway through it's red cycle though

I know myself I won't go over the line if there's a car in the intersection ahead of me. Some people honk but these days it's too much to depend on the other guy ahead to actually have his/her brain connected. Half the time there's nothing coming and they sit there for the yellow, the red, the green the other way and finally slooooooowly start to make the left turn..............

No way do I want to be stuck out there behind these people so to me at least, waiting another light is worth not getting T-boned because the idiot in front of me was texting or whatever it is these "drivers" are doing these days instead of driving. As for apace, I always leave just enough that I can get around the guy in front if the guy in back looks like he/she won't be stopping. I always have. I usually only need a 1/2 car length though. And yeah I have also pulled alongside and in front of the ones who leave like 2 car lengths. Heee. Seems to really upset them for some reason................funny how fast they change their minds and then pull up to an inch of the rear bumper! I don't do that one anymore as I'm older now and don't care about proving a point but it's often still tempting!
