Welder helmet and extension cord
Permalink

I just bought a Lincon Arc welder and need a helmet and an extension cord to run it from dryer plug downstairs.  I just missed the sale at TSC for the auto darkening helmet for $65...boo!  And their cords go on sale but not this wk...and I'm working on my wood trailer and would like to get it finished in time to get my wood in before the ****ty weather sets in..

Also if you have a good supply or source for sticks...I could use them too!

Thx!

You are lucky you missed the sale at TSC if you are talking about buying a cheap helmet. The price of the helmet reflects the speed and the size of the lens. I would recommend a good top of the line name brand helmet as one good weld flash can make a difference in your eye sight. Unless you have a relative that is an optometrist who can get you a discount in glasses as my daughter-in-law is.

I have two Lincoln helmets under $275. each if I remember right. The first one was acting up after 4 years so I bought a new one. Then a month later a friend tried it and it is working fine again. If you do not do a lot of welding get the smaller lens for a bit of a savings. Unless you are flush with cash and no sorry that is not me my wife will not let me play with sharp objects.

Yeah, till you find out that the cord you bought wont fit the dryer outlet.

You'll be further ahead installing a proper welder Outlet (50amp) to code so that if anything happens your insurance wont be void.

Makes no difference if he changes the end himself or not. They will cancel his insurance for not hiring a electrician to do all the electrical work on it. Then when he gets a new policy the price will be through the roof. Not allowed to do any electrical, plumbing or chimney work yourself building permit and inspected or not. If there is a claim insurance companies need someone to sue to get their money back.

Home owners are in fact allowed to do wiring in their homes as long as it's inspected. In fact, home owners of a detached dwelling can do just about anything as long as it's done to code and then checked out. I just wanted to clarify Joe's statement above because it's wrong.

Bill is correct. I've extensively wired two shops of mine on two properties with an electrical permit and both were completely legal. I had buried service run from the house to the shop in both cases by an electrical firm and they had to take out their own permit. A homeowner is allowed to change a defective light switch or outlet or change the end on a lamp cord or change a dryer cable etc. without a permit. If he f**ks up and burns the house down, well that's another issue. I've seen insurance issues even with plumbing that the home owner did himself.

 Thanks Warren !

I need to add, that rules are different if the home is not detached (i.e. a semi or townhouse)

yup, i wired our new house and just had the final inspection passed on monday. if you have the permit in your name nobody else, licensed or not, may perform any work. the fines can be quite substantial.

Yes that's correct.. I'm a builder, and know enough about ground up construction and have done ALL my own electrical on my house, including wiring the panel...with an inspection and everything passed...so I don't need a lesson on wiring a house...
The only issue I have with installing a new outlet for my welder is my panel doesn't have another double slot left...that's why I've made an extension cord for my dryer.
I've used 8/3 wire, so a bigger gauge than the buzz box or my dryer cord...so there will be no issues there. I`ve also asked a welder here close to me, and he sees no problem with my cord, and just told me to feel the cord after welding for a few min just to be sure. He said the worse thing that`ll happen is I'll trip my breaker...no biggy.
thx

does your panel have buss bars that will accept tandem breakers ? if so, can you move some circuits from full size breakers to the half size tandems ? that could create an opening for a double pole to run the welder. just a thought.

Ha I stand corrected! I called my insurance and they told me the same as being said here. Sorry about the misinformation.
