At this point in time we are not first gen Camaro experts but the previous owner seemed to be.  He said he knew this car from it's first owner and pretty much everything that had happened to it through it's life so far.

When we first looked at the car I said to him things like : No spoiler? No center console? No cowl hood or simulated vents on the hood?  His response was simply that true SS cars didn't have that stuff every time.  What he did say was that it was a factory 12 bolt which only SS and RS came with.  It also had a wire cable to secure the gas cap from theft from the factory which he said was and SS thing.  There was also something on the sub frame drivers side that I couldn't see in the dark that had to deal with the 12 bolt that was SS and RS only.  We haven't examined the VIN yet but he did say it was originally gold with white stripe on the nose with black interior.  Car came with the original 12 bolt and the M21, bucket seats, the original 350 is gone but the owner threw in one that has no guarantees and there is lots of rust.  We are trying to take everything I've learned and he has learned about big projects and get as prepared as we can for this one.  He has a plan and goal for what he wants to do with it and I will not steal his thunder and let Ben state his plans.  I like his plans and will help him achieve his goal.

The awesome thing is...even if it is not an SS....it is what Ben wants to build.  SS would be cool but not a deal breaker.

Been doing a bit of research on this SS thing and it seems that a 68 SS is one of the hardest ones to prove. Nothing on the cowl tag and it seems that the engine is the best way to prove. I know it does not matter but I like this kind of mystery and will dig until I can't dig anymore. The Canadian car factor has to always be kept in the back of your head while researching on the net for info. Most of everything that is posted as "gospel" is from U.S. guys with U.S. cars. I believe in 68 all Camaro 's to Canada were imported but It has been seen that export cars had differences. I have already read that the 68 SS came with the 350 as a base engine and the M20 is supposed to be in the manual cars. We were told we had an M21?? Also the past owner said that mono leafs were stock with the 12 bolt but...that is true in 67 but not 68. This car has 12 with multi leafs which would be correct. I do get the impression that a 12 bolt was base for an SS car which was stated by the other owner. My quick research says it needs the simulated louvers to be SS ours doesn't and the owner said that it didn't need it to be an SS?? At this point there is more saying it is an SS than there is not but the search is still young.

The point of this is not to call the previous owners liars but just for the fun of it. As I said ...it really doesn't matter.

It will be a fun project for sure
If it was originally a Canadian car than you should be able to get documentation from GM Canada's vintage vehicle service

But the hood is probably not original... doesnt match the colour.

Regardless, not ready to post a build thread yet. Just givin the heads up. Im pretty confident that it was an SS. This guy talked soooo much about it and knew all the little nitpickey things that I really dont think he would go that far to sell us an SS if it wasnt. The things a piece of junk. As of right now, SS or not, its worth scrap value to anyone who doesnt know what they have. The good side, is that we do, and since its relatively complete, I dont think I lost any money...

Ill upload more pics soon. No time to clean today, and its still outside and the weather isnt co operating. Otherwise, id be all over it. Just finished an 01 F150 too, so now that thats out of the way, the yearly oil changes are coming in and then it should be able to take a home in the shop.

The 67-68 Camaro is one of the nicest cars GM ever built. Please don't put a 69 cowl induction hood on it. What an awesome find.

As far as 71 Camaro SS's go GM would let you order whatever you wanted. I bought a 71 SS BB M21 Camaro 2 years old without many of the SS options, no PS, no posi, one piece front bumper, steel wheels with dog dish hubcaps, no spoiler, no stripes, and no consul. Wish I had of kept it as it was written off by a telephone post. I ran this car in NHRA at Cauga, Sanair etc.

I've dug into things a bit more and am pretty confident it is a true SS car. Ben's right about the fella we bought the car off. Very nice guy and new every little detail about this car. The Vintage department is a great Idea, thanks for the link.

Thanks John. Ben is more than a bit excited about this car.  We got the lead about 1 1/2 yrs ago from a fella on this site.  We looked at it but Ben walk away due to not having a job to be able to complete (or even really start) the project.  Things are much different now since he started his Millwright apprenticeship.

I did check out that site and it was the one site that said the SS should have a M20 4spd.   Well, I still need to go out and verify but I am almost positive that the trans we brought home with the car had 2 rings in the input shaft and more research has shown that it is actually a M20.

one ring = M21

two rings = m20

none = m22 (although some after market shafts came with no rings making this not entirely accurate)

Please correct me if this information is wrong.  I am just learning about 4spd Muncie transmissions.

This also again matches with the SS mystery as it should have and M20.

The M-20 or N-21 would be decided by the rear end gear. If you had a low rear gear the trans would be a M-21 (220 first gear) but if it had a high rear gear like a 3.08 you would get the M-20 with the 2.52 first gear to get you rolling. 68 was also the year that had mid year changes. The hoods had fin'd louvers on the hood while the latter cars had a port design. There are lots of little mid year stuff with the 68s

I'm sorry but I am just mess'n around!  LOL

We haven't started Ben's yet and his budget probably won't allow a 100% re-body like the one pictured.  I did the re- body on another 68 a few years back for a customer and thought it would be funny to throw up some pics for a laugh and get people wondering!   That other car is out on the streets in Brantford and is a 502 ramjet powered burnt orange with black stripes car.

Nice job slab, on all fronts, had me going. At least you are well aware of how to help Ben tear into and finish his. Although I suspect you are doing mostly a restoration on the car here is a pic of a 68 that showed up at Shannonville last month...for inspiration in case you decide to take it in a different direction. Cheers

Question, when you rebodied the other car, what make of panels did you use i.e. Goodmark...?

Thanks and the body panels were mostly Dii from Cross Canada and what the customer brought up from Carlisle PA from Central Camaro.  I think only one panel was Goodmark and it didn't fit any better or worse than the others.  For Ben's car everything will be purchased through my Buddy who is a dealer for Cross Canada.  Again I think the parts will be mostly Dii.

Ben ultimately would like to build a car like the picture you posted!

Small world;this is Rodney House's old race car. I saw it at Elliot lake this summer.

The traction bars are the type that take the place of the plate/lower shock mount that bolts to the axle.

Ok so not the factory style.......... does the axle housing have the bracket for the factory style ? ( maybe someone removed the factory style and add the "slapper" bars)

Thanks a lot guys for the comments. I have had my eyes on this for a while, and when I get to actually starting, ill start a build thread.
Henry, as far as the traction bars bars go, I dont have a picture right now to look at, and im at my moms so I cant go and check but I know that there is factory parts in the trunk, some sort of plate that goes in place of them its a rectangular plate of somesort with holes in it. I cant come up with the words at the moment, but you probably already know what I am talking about. I will get some more pics up of the more "special" or "unique" stuff about the car.

We are cleaning the shop and I needed a good spot to put my hood.  I always like the old mail box / snorkel on the novas and Camaros.  Model cars back in the day always seemed to have that option!  LOL

I will post up for Ben a small update. I feel bad for him, in a way, but his apprenticeship is really keeping him busy. He is racking up lots of hours and good pay checks which is very good for his long term careers goals and I know he loves his work and where he is working(good bunch of guys on the millwright team). He is a better welder than I am now, I'm proud to say. This has left him tired and no Saturdays to work in the shop here. He has been buying up another Camaro piece by piece and by Christmas should have from the dash top all the way to the tail panel in new parts. He will then start getting the exterior parts. Lots of disassembly has taken place and I know he has pics to start a build thread later.
