I had a trapper come in as the beaver were taking down a lot of trees two you could not put your arms around and coons above my shop stinking up the place. John called me to his truck to show me what he caught something I had never seen before. We had 22 barn cats at the high point and down to four right now. He had caught a fisher that looks like an oversized cat on steroids. Now with any luck my cat population should go back up and take care of the mice around the shop. Now how much flack am I going to take over this.

Fishers are generally solitary, so that is probably the only one around. They are mean as sin, and will kill cats and eat them. Good thing you got the sucker!

A friend lost at least one kitten to a fisher. One day I was getting the mail and one came out of the ditch and started hissing at me from about 50 ft away, I did not hang around to see what it was pissed off about.

I hear ya joe. I made the mistake of tearing down and doing a new build on the shop here, but only half decades ago. The other half is only connected by the roof. I should have leveled the whole show when I did it, but no, I'll do that other half next year. The old half is nasty Barn'ish. The coons, possums, wild cats and what ever else seem to chew/bend/bring in contractors or whatever is needed to get in there to this date.

The connecting wall between the 2 has been evacuated of any insulation that was once there.

I have caught dozens in my live trap of the above critters every year, except the squirrels, they must send memos or have meetings to avoid capture, I'm sure of it.

I started a swimming program for anything caught, but so far I have no graduates. I must be a bad teacher ?

My 'shop puppy' passed away years ago. When he was on duty, ain't nothing coming in the shop or on the property for that matter. Never replaced him.

The damage the critters actually do is incredible.

Put some ugly ass glasses on that critter and we have the next premier.

I understand the damage issues, Harry Eers (the squirrel) and BnE the raccoon have made a mess of my swiss cheese garage (1/4" aspenite is no deterrent) but I do not hurt them, I relocate(witness relocation program). Now every loose cat in my hood would get a trip to Melmac if I could. The only animal on the planet we can do without.(ask whats left of my birds and 'munks)

I tried the relocation once. Caught mom and I knew she had kits in the shop 2nd floor, cause well, I got them. I ain't about to take on a mom anything.

I hucked the cage with her incarcerated, in the truck on the way to work that morning. I sprayed her with some orange road paint/marker stuff cause I heard rumours.

Dropped her off about 15 miles from here, on a backroad, with a bush right there.
Took the afternoon off work to come back, put on the welding gloves and grab the little ones.

Dropped them at the exact same spot as mom. 2 days later, guess what I caught ?

Yup, an orange coon. I couldn't believe it. That's when I started the swimming program.

I have seen a couple of them while deer hunting just south of Bancroft. Neat to watch but I don't want one as a pet.

The only good fisher is a dead one as far as I am concerned. I heard they were introduced to control the porcupine population years ago. I don't believe they have any natural predictors and they will kill anything. Glad to see you got one.

Like when the Mongoose were introduced to a Caribbean island to control snakes.

Now the mongoose are a problem.

They are mean SOB's. I had one attack my daughter's little dog on the front lawn a few years back. I managed to chase him off with a rake but he still tried to get past me to get back at the dog. He made several lunges but yelling and swinging the rake eventually deterred him. Didn't seem to be the least bit afraid of me. Wish I could have gotten to a gun.
