Which Cummins? They made many different 4 cylinders. The best one would probably be a 4BT. They were available in bread trucks with an Adaptor to run a chevy TH400. They are basically the older 12v Cummins 6BT minus a couple of cylinders.
I also like the 4-53 Detroits but they are pretty heavy. They rev well however and love abuse. They are only happy when being beat on. You can get them very inexpensively. They were in a lot of equipment as a pony motor, and in a lot of military equipment since they will happily run on junk fuel.
Yup. 4BT is the nice one, they are 3.9 litre and as someone said earlier ,they are simply a short wheelbased version of the one in Dodge trucks. also used in a lot of construction equipment,we sold New Holland dozers (DC70) that used them,lots of loaders etc..too...
