Never knew they were different . I have one here the solenoid is left of the top bolt toward the fender not the block. if thats what you need Ill trade you for another or better yet a stomp start. I know for a fact the one i have here is out of a car
Hi Slim. That sounds like the later style, 1957-62. I need the one that has the solenoid on top in the 12:00 position like the starter in the photo below. The part number stamped into the case should be 1107626.
I have a couple cores, but they are the later the style. The problem is the solenoid is super close to the brace and will probably contact it when the engine is under load. You can see what I mean in the photo below. Its not my car. Just a photo from the web.
Cant say I have run across one . You could run the 216 flywheel and starter or change out the overrunning clutch gear to the 9 tooth . the 6volt starter will take 12 without a problem ... not sure how the coil will hold up ... thats if you still have the 216 ... talk to the guy at AFB over on Renne st . he has rebuilt some oddball stuff for me at a reasonable price... As long as your not in a rush and you carry cash.. If someone has a original spare that would be easiest but I think most got switched over to the newer style. rock auto has the drive( 9 tooth )and coil
I'm committed to the 12V flywheel as I've already had it machined. The 12V pinion and armature shaft is smaller than the 6V so I can't just swap the gears. It might be worth having a shop see what they can do. It would be nice to reuse my tired 6V starter since it will be worthless once I pull the 216.
That's funny. The armature shaft is smaller on the 12V starters. Its hard to imagine how it could fit both 6V and 12V. Either way, it looks like I may have found one locally for $50. Supposedly its complete and it works.
